Music of the plants - How it works
In this video I reply to all those who asked me how the music of the plants work and more specifically whether the sound in the recordings come directly from the pants.
The U1 device allows plants to produce sounds and to make music. It does so by measuring the electrical resistance of vegetable tissues and transducing it into a MIDI signal (Musical Instruments Digital Interface). The MIDI signal then controls a synthesizer that produces the actual sound.
At first, it might be difficult to assimilate the idea that in the end the music produced by the plant is not only an automatic outcome of this electrical connection, rather a sort of "awareness" of the plant was also involved.
This is what the researchers in Damanhur (the developers of the U1 device) have found out in their forty years research. They say that after some time of being exposed to their own sounds, plants seem to become aware that the sound is coming from them and they start modulating it intentionally.
I witnessed this myself years ago, while rehearsing for a live performance. I found myself spending hours playing piano together with a plant and I was witnessing the slow development of the process. The subtle changes in the plant's music in response to the sound of the piano and its own sound was becoming more and more evident to me.

The real question here is whether the plant has any active input, or whether the device is receiving an electrical variable that the plant produces involuntarily. For example, would you get the same result from something like a potato, or an inanimate object which could produce a variable electrical potential. The other question is whether there is a detectable structure or pattern to this 'music'. Is it random sounds? Is it a pattern that repeats over and over? Answering these kinds of questions will bring us closer to an understanding of whether what we are hearing is from a kind of plant intelligence, or whether it is caused by some involuntary action or electrical process that has little or nothing to do with the plant having an active input.

I have little understanding of music, but i think your explanation is lacking in resolution, while on the keyboard you have full control of the notes, the plant emits sparse signals, the vibration can induce a continuous loop(not necessarily the plant starts to like the music), the plant has little influence on the overall music, seems that the box has a processor that makes more than just translate the impulses, it uses a mathematical algorithm to interpolate notes that are not off the scale, so it's not a 1 to 1 ratio, if this is acceptable or not from a purist, scientific point of view, i don't know, because it accounts for the interval which relates to time, but i would like this device to have a raw 1 to 1 output to make some scientific study. Subbed in your channel, hope for more detailed info about the device, thanks.

He isn't in disbelief, he is unsatisfied with the human element involved in structuring/interpolating the input of the plants into sounds that are pleasing to hear. What he's saying is he wants a true 1 to 1 output of electrical impulse to raw sound, without the post-processing. Do you understand that there is software in the box that imposes timing and scales on the raw input? I think you did a fine description. Q: using the same plant, and now with multiple electronic pulse detectors attached to different leaves of the same plant at the same time, will each leaf be transmitting different electrical impulses , or are the same electrical impulses shared through the plant as a whole. In other words is there just one song being played throughout the whole plant because of grounding ?

This is interesting, but there are still many unanswered questions. MIDI conveys information about things like pitch, tempo, and velocity. The keyboard is able to encode and transmit this information in language that the computer can understand. Changes in electrical potential do not equal MIDI output without a codec. Could you explain more about how the changes in electrical potential are interpreted and converted to MIDI output?

Hi there. I work with electronics and I understand how this device works. The two "elelctrodes" you're using are just measuring the resistance (you watered the plant first to ensure conductivity) between the two, which happens on the surface(es) of the plant. Those electrodes aren't reading ANY kind of EM fields or activity. The "response" of the plant when touched is actually a change of resistance. Take a wet piece of wood or plastic and connect the two probes on each side - you'll get the same result. Different patterns? Yes, that depends on how fast the water is vaporizing or of the variations of the resistance of the wood, due to mechanical movement or environment properties. Don't take it as a critic, because it's not; i like the sounds and I make music myself so... It's just the explanation of how it works. We also recorded sounds of planets, of Earth etc. So why not plants? But in order to do that properly, you need to modify your tools. If you want to know my idea, write me back. Cheers my friend. :)
@SoundOfGoldenLight
@SoundOfGoldenLight 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Daniel, thank you for your comment. Actually, I didn't water the plant, it was raining outside. You don't need to water plants necessarily for that to work, although sometimes it can help. Regarding the wet piece of wood or plastic, I am sure you would get some kind of reading from those as well. But that would not explain the fact that the music coming from a plant evolves in time the more a plant is exposed to its own sounds. At first, I found it difficult to believe, but then I experienced it. But without the experience, I totally understand where you're coming from.

So are the sounds that we hear the actual summation of the frequencies generated from the plant, or is there a software component within the device which rounds the frequencies to the nearest note value? And if there are staccato notes played, then is the volume actually representative of the amplitude from the plant? (ei, -12dbs to a ratio to what frequency generated from the plant). Also what is the spectrum of biometric energy and how is that mathematically converted to the sound spectrum which is between 20hz and 20khz? I guess I will have to read more into this before incorporating it into legit electronic music.

In this device, the readings from the plant are converted into two musical scales you can choose from, one is chromatic and one is major. With computer software it is possible to add more options, it all depends on the kind of musicality one wants to experiment with. I have not designed the device so, unfortunately, I am not able to provide technical details on how the electrical signals are converted exactly.
@augustus6148
@augustus6148 6 жыл бұрын
Interesting, so I see. So if you were to use the major function, you would more or less be utilizing the device for partially randomized notations in order to relax to, or draw inspiration from, but the TRUE musicality coming from the plant is what I'm interested in ei chromatic. People must realize that it is possible to translate any form of modulation, electrical signal or other inputs into a decent sounding soundscape using the correct type of synthesizer and software. I did a little reading regarding the function of bio metric feedback within the human body for healing and medical research, and it appears that most of the vital systems within a human fall well beneath 40hz. Do you think it is possible that the biometric feedback within various devices such as this simply elevate the octaves so they come within audible ranges? If that is the case, bravo, but I still think that the notion of simply elevating the Hz frequencies so they may be audible may sound a little more convoluted than definable notes on the musical scale. I would like to hear the actual frequencies after they are amplified (and transposed from the low octaves) to hear what they sound like before being modulated and translated into midi by the device, if you see what I mean.

So, disregarding what the device does, what does the actual signal look like? Is it just noise with a peak when you touch it or otherwise do something to the plant? Before I'd get into making music out of plants, it would be nice to know that it's possible to get something non-random out of it. Otherwise you're just buying an algorithm that makes generative music out of a noise source. That's interesting by it self, but then we can just forget about the plants ;)

Are you able to communicate with the plant thru this system , not changing anything except asking a few questions to the plant in order to get a response that may differ from the usual responses . perhaps you could ask , how are you today , do you enjoy my company , and see how it responds, it may have a certain tone with every yes or no or hello , if you record these sessions you may eventually establish a verbal connection that you could share with the world

I saw a video of plants singing then the tone slightly changed when insects buzzed on by, as if the plants were saying hello. My questions are: - what about grass? Grass must hum too. When we step on grass, does it jack up their vibration? - if a tree hugger hugged a tree, would its energy mix with the human energy and sound differently as opposed to how it sounds when not hugged? - could this invention allow us to understand frequencies better and someday help us determine good plants (medicinal) vs bad plants (toxic or dying)? Like one day we can hook up to plants in the Amazon, listen to its tune then translate its frequencies and be like "this one has what's needed to cure AIDS"... Thanks, Sadie

Hello. I love this and am fascinated by it. Could you please answer some questions for me? If you are placing the electrodes in the soil, wouldn't it be picking up the electrical resistance between the leaves and the soil, not the leaves and the roots? Wouldn't you have to place the electrode on the roots directly for it to pick up the electrical resistance between them and the leaves? Also, how has the U1 been calibrated specifically for plants? How did you determine what the calibrated parameters should be? And finally, why have you restricted the output to correlate with the Western 12-note scale? Doesn't this round up/down the tones as the plants frequencies would surely translate to be microtonal? Has this just been done for creative license? Thank you!

Hi Emma, thank you for your comment. I am afraid I cannot answer your questions because I have not designed this device. There are also other devices on the market nowadays, so if you do a search on the internet you may be able to find some answers. An algorithm is translating random voltage fluctuations into notes that sound harmonious. The reason it sounds pleasant and interesting is because a human has programmed it to sound that way. The device clearly maps voltages onto a musical scale - so it's basically impossible that anything it outputs would sounds bad

I love this music but I find it a stretch to believe that a plant’s output sounds exactly like a harmonious HUMAN music system. Where are the dissonances and microtones? Have you tried allowing the output to be translated using a purely theremin-like system (for want of a better description) to express non-standard tones?

if i understand the machine translate the electrical signal of the plants into a midi signal, then the electrical signal is not pure but approximated by the machine into a 12 tone scale. It will be more intersting listening to an amplification of the electrical signal and not at an approximation of electric frequencies.

I have a question ; if I understand correctly, what it really does is a translation into our musical system (ie the occidental system) so it takes values of the plants and transform those values into the nearest "usable" notes value (in our system) ; if it took the real value it would be fine, and it would be modal music technically but I don't believe it does that (please tell me if I'm wrong) And then it uses common midi instruments to read thos transformed values ; i really don't see the point, it could be fun but people are saying this is music of the plants when this is not ; it's a gross translation ; on a side note I am all in for random generate music but the problem here is that we are lying to people ; thanks a lot in advance for your reply :) Also in the 60's a french scientist did researsh on the signal coming from the proteine of the plants, it's called "proteodies" ; have a look on that if you're interested ;) cheers from france :) Louis

Hi, the answer to the first part of your question is yes. The device converts the electrical signals from the plant into MIDI signals and it assigns the value to a note of either the major scale or the chromatic scale. Sorry, I did not understand what you mean exactly in the last part of your comment.

I had the same question. The plant may be "vocalizing" in the Western 12-tone system because it's being filtered through that, but what if that's not the real sound the plant is making? What if it were microtonal as in Arabic or African music-making? Looking forward to your thoughts.

First of all, what this device does is basically turning the differences between 2 conductivity values (the root and the leaf) and turns this into music (the conductivity somehow seems to varies a bit over the time, or the algorythm makes is moves randomly, I don't know exactly) ; I had a student who sell the result of this (like "music made from/by a begognia" and market it as "the language of the plants" , as if they were speaking ; he tells on his website that this technology is a major scientific discover ; I had the chance to analyse the result via some midifiles he sent to me ; and for what I remember, It generates always in B major, and every 16bars or so, it throws a cadence to make it more musical (otherwise the result would be in constant tension, a cadence bring resolution, wich is basically what music is if you simplify the whole concept of music) I was ask to harmonize the result so I know what I'm talking about ; anyway it doesn't seems scientific at all and, by analyzing it I had a clear view about how the algorythm works ; I'am all for generativ music, I use a similar technology sometimes to find musical idea ; however, if market as "the language of the plants", it is basically a scam and a lie, based on a simple green washing concept and playing with people expectations and dreams...so I don't work with this student anymore, that was too much lies for me ; And for the sound itself, that comes out of this boxes, it's just really poor quality midi instrument ; they could have done it better, they could have made more options, like a CV output (control voltage) not based out any scale so we could use this on a modular synth or else, and without any artifical tools (like the cadences), they could have done a midi output with pitchbend automations to match the exact result (google "scala library" and microtuning) but they didn't..the goal of this product is basically liying to people and make money out of their credulity, imho ; do not hesitates if you have further question, I don't know if my story was clear :) Cheers :) Louis

What does it sound like if you put one terminal up your butt and the other on your tongue? Seriously this is random and anything could be the "catalyst" for variance to make pre programmed synth sounds. Put one terminal in a fish bowl and the other on the container and call it fish music.

You are a kind soul. However you are either misunderstanding or misrepresenting the idea of "plant music." Music is based on ratios, thanks Pythagorus, and it seems universal. Plants are ratios, of Phi or Fibonacci. This could be interpreted as music notation with some cipher. Yours appears to be based (in one aspect) on the fact that water is charged, (like the potato battery) having only relation to the plant in terms of water density and charge, and nothing to do with the plant itself, other than the medium.
@SoundOfGoldenLight
@SoundOfGoldenLight 7 жыл бұрын
I agree with everything you say. That was actually my first reaction when I learned about this, for quite some time. The intriguing thing here is that plants do seem to undergo some kind of learning process because the music that comes out of them evolve over time. Sometimes the music stops/starts when things change in the proximity of the plant (with no physical touch). When I do public presentations, I engage the audience in experimenting the projection of various thoughts and feelings towards the plant and the outcome is at times startling. I like to think that the device is reading something similar to what the polygraph reads in humans. I am not trying to convince anyone, i can only share from my own experience. :-)

The alligator clips are just conductors. What does it sound like if you put your clips onto your fingers? Or a dry cactus? Or a damp shoe? Your clips are relying on the electrical potential difference between the moisture from the soil and the plant. This is measurable electrically as is any connected object to ground. Sounds like nice music. Sounds like the impulse for the sound generation has nothing to do with the plant apart from its electrical conductivity. Good marketing for a handmade electronic signal generator though! Pity you couldn't give it an actual name. How about the Yu-1 Plantgen? Sounds heaps better than 'device!'
