Disturbed is a multi-platinum-selling heavy metal band renowned for their hits “Down With The Sickness,” “Sound of Silence,” “The Vengeful One,” “The Light,” “Stricken,” “Land Of Confusion,” and “Indestructible.” They worked with artists like Myles Kennedy, and Lzzy Hale - amassing billions of global streams and achieving 5 consecutive number one debuts on the Billboard Top 200.
Lyrics:
Hello, darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence
In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence
And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
And no one dare
Disturb the sound of silence
"Fools," said I, ""You do not know
Silence, like a cancer, grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you""
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said
"The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls
And whispered in the sound
Of silence"

An old man once told me a story of his father. His father was a German pilot in WWI. He had been struck in the engine earlier in the day on the 24th of December 1914. He never made it across the lines, and planted his "Crate" in no-man's land. By the time he had his wits about him and was ready to make a run for it, the guns on the front fell silent. Deafening silence. Finally pierced by a single man in song.

An anthem for today's world. Listen to it using the filter of these interpretations: Darkness = Oppression. Silence = Apathy. Music = Action for Justice. Seeds = Ideas for change. Neon = artificial. Subway walls = The worker class. Tenement Halls = The poor. Disturbed's interpretation is absolutely the perfect arrangement to feature the message of the song. And silence is deafening to the ears. After Katrina, parts of New Orleans were so silent that it actually hurt a person's ears. No dogs, no air conditioner white noise, no running cars, no tv or radio blaring, no music, no noise at all. A very physically painful experience.

When I first heard Simon and Garfunkel’s version, I was still in high school and the song made us feel like it was a warning about previous generations, we vowed not to be like that, we knew we wouldn’t be the same and that things would change. Here it is now and we’re the previous generation, nothing has changed and David Draiman is using the words of what was an anthem to scold us angrily and to warn us again. I doubt we’ll listen this time either.

I grew up listening to Simon & Garfunkel sing this song. I loved the words, but never liked the song. I felt that the words were powerful, but they were delivered to us in a very passive way. It felt very wrong to me. This was an angry song, why were they so gentle about it?!?! When I found this cover about 6 months ago, I fell in love with the song in its entirety. David gave this song exactly what it needed...RAGE! "Damnit people, you didn't listen to S&G when they warned you. Now I'm pissed and I'm going to MAKE you listen."

Exactly!!!! I never really liked the S&G version but this version makes you listen to the words! It was so moving that I listened to the song for days, and started listening to their other songs. I never realized how great a songwriter Paul Simon is until now. To write a song decade's ago that still rings true today is amazing! I can't really fault the way S&G sang it back then because they were hippies and were into peace symbols and flower children. David's rendition is perfect for today and it's amazing how many generations of people are enjoying it! 20 to 90 year olds. He has an incredible voice and I wish he would do more ballads (for lack of a better word).

I was born in 1963. I only knew Simon and Garfunkles version. Like the tune! But this... this verson... omg I never knew the lyrics OR FELT them like this. BEST version EVER. Thank you Disturbed for bringing this song to LIFE. LIFE. LIFE!!! I cried, felt the pain. FELT the pain. SO greatful for this. I had my 86 year old mother listen to this and she watched this video every day until the cancer took her at 89. I'd come home from work and she would be intently watching this very loudly. I just rocked with her because... well just because. I think this song brings forward regret mixed with asking for forgiveness at the same time. The silence is deafening and it's time to finally speak. Whether you speak with physical words or the feelings you wish to convey... my mom telling me she is asking for forgiveness for me to give her (I'm still stuggling) and yet I cried so hard the first time I heard this because I, like my mother, is me asking forgiveness to my own daugther in which I was a crap mother like mine was. I cry because I want her to hear my words and listen, I want her to take my arms so I might reach her. That's what my dying mother was saying to me... The circle. I didn't listen to her (guilt) and my daughter doesn't listen to me. This is truly a DEEEEEE:P song. Sorry I rambled there but I loved your comments on this song and you inspired me to open up to it. Great song indeed.

David Draiman...a voice to die for! A powerful yet soulful voice that can go from warm baritone to angelic tenor, from clear as a crystal to rasp/distortion/vocal fry and back on a dime. He has a timbre in his voice that I've never heard before.....just hauntingly beautiful and pure tonal properties to it! An awesome talent and obvious training to deliver what he does!! Can sing like an angel or the devil ! Loved your reaction and your take on David's performance. Try "Deceiver", "The Night", "Indestructible", "The Light", "Violence Fetish" and "Enough" by Disturbed too. They are a bit "heavier" Glasses Kingdom, lolol...but maybe you will like them too. Despite being ill that day, David Draiman delivered a performance for the ages, complete with an orchestra. Paul Simon reached out to the group after the performance to congratulate them as he posted it on his social media, calling it the best cover of any of his songs ever. Conan celebrated the performance last year as it became the first video from his show to hit 100 million views. Keep up the great work!

I like the Conan rendition as well, but the video on this one gets me every time. Notice the end of the video. Music sheets on one side and the boat full of instruments going to join them. Without each other you have silence. Such a powerful song and David is such a powerful singer. Classically trained, beautiful voice. Listen to some of his metal too, like Down with the Sickness, different side of David and his group (the guy with the guitar and the guy with the big drum) but just as wonderful as they are in this song.

Love your interpretation! And I know exactly what you mean about “silence”. Sometimes, silence can be deafening. This is the most beautiful, powerful cover I’ve ever heard. I cried the first time I heard it. I was speechless.

S&G did a good job on the lyrics, but Dosturbed to the level oh Holy Crap!!! David's voice makes it perfect! It starts calm and gets angrier and angrier, the way it should have been done back in 64...KUDOS TO DISTURBED FOR MAKING A PERFECT COVER OF THIS SONG!!!!! ❤❤❤❤

To add to other comments you may learn more about the meaning of this song by listening to Simon and Garfunkel’s version of this song (as Simon wrote it) and then listen again to this. As many have said the original was a warning. This version shows the result of ignoring that warning. Little did Simon know how prophetic his song would become in today’s world of technology.

Great reaction. To me Simon and Garfunkel the original writers and performers were telling us back in the 60’s when I first heard the song to get our shit together or the future won’t be pretty and this version is saying oh well the shit has now hit the fan!!!!! Just saying.

When this song came out in 1964 written by Paul Simon, that's all he had was a acoustic guitar, and I have loved it ever since ,but this remake brings it to a whole new generation and it is great!!!!

Paul Simon heard David draimen sing sound of silence. It brought tears to his eyes and he said David was meant to sing that song. If you look up sound of silence in Wikipedia you'll see Paul Simons explanation of the opening line. Anton Chekhov says the role of the artist is to ask questions not to answer them. So regardless of What Paul says is the meaning of the opening line The true meaning is that which is true to the listener. David was raised as an orthodox Jew and went to school to become a cantor. A canta sings back everything the rabbi has just red from the torah. Cantors have very deep Melodic voices and can sustain low notes for a period of time. Their cover of Strong's If I ever lose my faith in you Is really good
