Ben Bram talked about Avi's voice in an interview he did about how he became the arranger for PTX. He talked about Avi's voice and called him a rare bird. He said Avi has not only a beautiful voice but the ability to control it throughout his wide range that few bass singers ever achieve. He can mimic a bass guitar and harmonize with a cello or any other instrument in it's lowest registers. I think the article was called How to Quit your Day Job. Great

Avi is an trained Basso Profundo ( the lowest bass category I think) and has broken many speakers when onstage with PTX. He was just about to join an opera company when Scott contacted him and asked if he'd like to join PTX for the Sing-Off competition. They won and Avi stayed with the group for 5 years.
@charlottevan_8 Жыл бұрын
Right. Avi had been offered a position as a bass with the Los Angeles Opera when he was approached by Ben Bram (PTX's subsequent producer/arranger), who brought Scott along to persuade him. They convinced him to choose PTX (for the Sing Off), and he remained with them for 6 years actually. His solo career is amazing and while his style is generally considered Folk/Americana, he spreads his creative wings frequently. He's currently hard at work on new songs for his next album, and has teased that he's going in a rock and blues direction right now. That's going to be very interesting, especially if his Sunset Sound live version of "When I'm a Fool" is any indication.

One suggestion-PTX singing the National Anthem at the 2023 Football Championship. You will be stunned, I mean they are always great….but Mitch? Stunning! And Matt? His base is beautiful in that performance, it needed it to have a grounded a depth of feeling to the song and he delivered! They all did so well and not that many have reacted to it. It was said that people there thought they were not really singing because when Mitch took off, Kirsten’s mouth wasn’t moving? 😂 You just must see it….so great! 💗

One of their best covers EVER!!!! Mitch kills it,and Kirsti hits all the off beats perfectly and then there's the fabulous duo of Avi & Kevin COMPLETELY CRUSHING the bass and beats,and then Scotts harmonies and accompanying fill ins....not to mention Avi's dope break down in the one section...one of their best covers.seriously. Mitch doesn't even need or use auto tune like kiira has to....he's just naturally gifted like that!!😃🎶🔥✌
@chrisabel1833 Жыл бұрын
This is a major upgrade from the original. Kiiara used synths to move her voice from pitch to pitch in the chorus, Mitch sings it live. I listened to Kiiara's version once for comparison. That was enough for me.

I read an interview where Mitch admitted that learning how to jump so much, so quickly was one of the most difficult things for him, and he made it sound so effortless.

After hearing her original, I truly can't imagine why anyone would ever want to listen to it - especially when there's the upgrade x 100 right here with PTX!
@heidifruchtl354 Жыл бұрын
@rfiliaga if I remember correctly, PTX was approached by MTV to "cover" the song for something. Normally, the group members put forth an idea of what to cover individually, and then, as a group, it's a yes or no.

Yay! Another PTX reaction. It's been so long. Okay, 'Down' by Kevin Olusola and 'Change on the Rise' by Avi Kaplan. You really need start checking out some of their solo stuff. You haven't heard ANYTHING of what either of them can really do yet. That sentence is a mess, but you know what I mean. Oh, and you need to listen to 'Prayers for this World'. So great to hear from you again. Hey, I have posted the first comment! I don't think that's ever happened before. LOL.
@zrebbesh Жыл бұрын
This is a ridiculously hard melody line to sing. Mitch is hitting notes perfectly in rapid runs that are wide intervals apart, in a key with lots of accidentals and discords, and the whole group is harmonizing, seamlessly, in simultaneous slides and synchronized pitch warps, while tossing the vocal line around from voice to voice with absolutely perfect timing! It's hard to even UNDERSTAND how technical and hard this is to sing, and these guys just sit there on the couch and knock it out!

I helped plan a teamwork training at work a few months ago and convinced the person leading it to show this video as an example of what can come out of people being perfectly in sync together. It was mainly to show off Pentatonix to people that wouldn't hear them normally😂

So glad you got to this one! It's one of my favourite PTX covers. I love watching what each of them is contributing to the whole. Avi's subterranean bass drops are legend. And yes, Mitch is doing vocal chops without any digital help (unlike Kiiara, who used them in her original). Kevin also gets to shine, showing off his precision beatboxing skills. And finally, in the last verse the Trio highlighting their superb timing by carving up each line of the verse and sharing it among themselves. A master class of vocal control! Thanks for another great reaction. Always here for Pentatonix. 🙂

The timing between the trio for the end is just so crazy good, and also so crazy difficult.

To see just how masterful mitch is you should watch the original for comparison. It's insane how he was able to pull off what the original needed synthe and playbacks live, while looking so damn effortless. You don't realize how fucking difficult what he's doing because he makes it look so natural. He goes from high to mid and lows in a second. Try singing it and you realize how different it would sound

This may be my favorite pairing of Scott and Mitch. They are all so talented and at the peak of their abilities...but...Mitch is another level of sublime. He is just in the groove, concentrating but keeping it loose, and flawless. He amazes me every time I hear him.

I like this one because it is a one take throwback like their evolution videos. They do 4 or 5 run throughs and pick the best one. So I'm not sure there was sound engineers involved unless you count how the mics are set up. Avi's voice is just stunning in any register, whether he is holding down the bass line or singing the melody. I would love if you would react to his solo music. Avi's first solo release was Change on the Rise which is a warrior song or his latest release When I'm a Fool live from Sunset Sound studios where he is accompanied by some great musicians including Shooter Jennings which produced the album Floating on a Dream with Avi Anyway great reaction, cheers!

You should check their originals now that you're more familiar to them 😉 they're just great and fun ! Please give a look at Popspring Special 2016, live performance in Japan, the sound is amazing and you'll see all the talent they have on their own, writing lyrics, mélodies and arrangements, just wonderful. 3 originals and one medley, 15 minutes of pure art and joy, promise ! Yeah, I've heard that the Butter x Dynamite notification gets blocked. You probably just have to block the video 100% in order to get your reaction out. This song was actually a live recording. All of their songs on or around the sofa (other than Bohemian Rhapsody) are done "live". They generally sing it through 3 or 4 times and then choose the best of the recordings. Yes, they won a Grammy for their rendition of Jolene, which they sang with Dolly.

Avi's voice is just as genetic as Mitch's - you can train it to make the most of it, but if you aren't born with it you'll never have it. Avi is a basso profundo and Mitch is a countertenor. Both are rare. Avi has actually mentioned in at least one interview that he had to teach himself to speak in a higher register than his natural speaking voice because he spoke so low that people had trouble understanding him. There are videos of him blowing out the sound systems at smaller venues with his low notes. And if you haven't done it already you should react to "Aha! Live at the Star Vista". Most people recommend that one because Mitch absolutely loses it, but if you're paying attention you can hear Avi damage the sound system maybe halfway through. It's still working but the bass is really muddy from that point forward.

Sorry for the problems you had trying to upload. I've heard on another reaction channel that the more subscribers a channel has, the more "leeway" KZbin gives them in allowing their reactions to go through without being blocked. Don't know if it's true or not, or if that would be the reason for your problem uploading, but it seems like a possibility. Or it could be that the YT 'bots are just being jerks - also definitely a possibility!

Avi certainly trained for it in school. Kevin? Not so much. Kevin is classically trained since childhood on piano, saxophone, and cello, but I don't know where he learned how to beatbox. I'm pretty sure that it wasn't a class in Yale's pre-med program, however. I've seen a video that referred to some kind of online beatboxing community, complete with how-to videos, but I don't know how far back it goes and the reference didn't claim that Kevin was involved with it in any way. I know that Kevin said he'd been involved with amateur a cappella before he joined Pentatonix. I've also heard that Pentatonix trained Kevin in singing; I don't know how accurate that is. However, if that's true then his previous a cappella experiences would have been as a beatboxer. I don't know for sure how early that was in his life or what kind of training or mentoring he may have received there. I have this feeling that beatboxing and rapping are things that kids pick up from other kids, not in any kind of classses. But I'm probably just showing my ignorance here; just because I've never heard of classes in such things doesn't mean that they don't exist.

@@heatherhuard That would certainly make sense; the two of them worked so closely together, after all. I'm still in awe of their "fight"/duet in their 11th performance on _The Sing-Off;_ I have trouble separating which of the two was doing what because it goes so fast.
