By the time they recorded this video they'd already had a few Grammy Awards and platinum albums up their sleeves. This one is one of the most difficult arrangements. Mitch has INSANE voice control. He goes from chest voice to head voice so seamlessly, it's crazy. The original singer had to computerize her voice to attempt that.

This is not a cover, it's a MAJOR UPGRADE! Kiiara can't even sing her own song without electronic enhancements. Pentatonix sings it perfectly on their own. Mitch really shines on this one. And they do plenty of songs where one member takes the lead throughout. It's about an even split between songs where one member leads and songs where each take a lead. This video was produced as an homage to their earlier videos in which it was just the five of them sitting on a couch and singing live, but the was a fully-produced recording.

One of the best things about PTX is their generosity and dedication to the music. When they select a song to cover (or write an original) they push egos to the side and mate the work to the best voice to cover it. Most acapella groups (actually most bands) have a lead singer and maybe a second lead and the rest are backing - PTX has avoided that and th drama that usually accompanies it. First (always) comes the music...

This is THE BEST reaction I’ve heard to this PTX cover for a very long time! You commented on ALL of the relevant parts of the song, including the fact that Mitch is SO LOW KEY and effortless in this! Plus the vocal round at the end! Nobody EVER mentions that, but they all do it so effortlessly, without looking at each other to ensure that they’re hitting the right note at the right time! Thank you!

Also, this is a particular skill of PTX... the laid-back, one-take masterpiece, and the reason that "Gold" is one of my favourite covers. Just a suggestion, especially for Pentatonix. If you don't know the song, please listen to the original first (no need to react to it, unless you want to). The difference between the original and this fantastic cover is vast. The original is all electronic tricks. Mitch is a machine on the vocals; Kevin on the beatbox; Avi's bass drops, and the harmonies. The vocal round at the end is perfection. Chill ... yes; simple ... not in the least.

That is what I love about this video - they're all so chill. Their orchestrated music videos are great, but the vibe and simplicity of this video feels like they're just hanging around and spontaneously decided to sing because they love what they do. As for Mitch leading, the group has a really good feel for when one specific voice best fits a piece, and they're very generous at sharing the spotlight. Most of them have at least one song where they're the primary vocalist. Scott takes the lead a lot because his range is really versatile, but they all have their moments. Mitch: Gold, Aha!, Bohemian Rhapsody Kirstie: Rather Be, Say Something, Be My Eyes, Water Avi: Light in the Hallway Matt: You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch This is by no means a comprehensive list, but it's 2:30 in the morning and my brain isn't entirely functional. Also, if you want to hear some amazing, pure harmonies, listen to their original, Run to You. It's a five-part harmony with no beatboxing - they're all singing. It's truly spectacular.

I think you should delve into their history, starting with the Sing Off Season 3. Kirstie, Scott and Mitch have known each other since they were young teens. Avi and KO joined them just before the Sing Off audition. It's been a journey, for sure. They do also have some originals. Run To You, Sing, That's Christmas To Me, Light in the Hallway, and others my mind can't seem to bring to the forefront at the moment.

You should react to their Sing Off journey (the competition they won back in 2011). It's interesting seeing them get better and better as the weeks pass. Also, they all look baby-faced as hell, it's great. I have a preference for their least edited videos, too. This is definitely on a line between the more raw and unproduced videos of their early years (2012-2015) and their later videos. After they won the TV show The Sing Off, the record label contract they won was cancelled, supposedly because the label didn't feel they were marketable (HAHAHA!) They started making dozens of youtube videos, sitting on a couch with a couple of mics. Some of the best of these are: Evolution of Michael Jackson, We are Young, Thrift Shop and Gangnam Style. When they won a Grammy for their Daft Punk medley, which was filmed in a closet in one of their apartments and went viral, the record labels took a second look, and they were signed again. Looking forward to more PTX reactions!

The reason Mitch has the lead is because no other human being can sing this. OTOH the amazing arrangement where each phrase is broken apart and passed from Mitch to Scott to Kirstie blows my head apart. That is so difficult to do! Try Aha! Singapore star vista. It's the Avi and Mitch show. It features the ultimate Mitch slap. But listen to the Imogen Heap (spelling?) Original first. The Aha! Singapore star vista performance is truly the best way to appreciate Mitch. Warning, it's filmed with a cell phone that can't handle the sound. Not that it matters much, as Avi blew part of the sound system just before Mitch starts. I don't normally recommend watching this right away, I usually recommend new PTX reactors to wait, but you watched this one early and your head didn't explode, so you might be able to handle it. Maybe. Make sure you have someone who can call the paramedics, just in case.

PTX has a fair amount of 'single-lead' songs. They generally just do what they think is best for the song. Members of the group have pointed to Mitch as the best singer because of his vocal control, and it's been noted that he's very consistent on tour. I imagine that's why he had most of the lead on this - that lead part is HARD, having to do all of those jumps accurately, and they were doing this song live on tour so it had to be done consistently night after night. But it's not like anyone was slacking in this or anything, the timing for the other parts is nuts! It's most notable when they were doing the round at the end, but even the backing parts while Mitch was singing lead. And Avi and Kevin are always beasts, they knocked this one out of the park

A pet peeve of mine is when Pentaholics recommend this sing without any context of why they do so. Yes, Mitch is AMAZING in this....BUUUUT, the reason why this version of the song is even more amazing is because Mitch achieves sounds just with his voice, for which the original song had to used computers. If you listen to this through that lense, it goes from being amazing, to being mind-blowing. Pentaholics...do better when recommending this!! And to quote your t-shirt and Ron Swanson...Please and Thank you!

If you really want to see smooth, beautiful Mitch you should see the video of his cover Your Power. Like a mix of rum and silky caramel with a hard R here and there. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hmqYlJibjrh4eNE

You can watch the original but I don't recommend it IMO it is terrible! If you want to see young PTX watch or react to their performances on season 3 of the Sing Off. That is where it all began. The first time they all met in person was the day before the audition for the show.

When you listen to Pentatonix cover songs, ESPECIALLY one you are not familiar with, go listen to the original first!!! You loved Hallelujah because of their arrangement. Your assumption about their beginnings and reaction to this song couldn’t be more wrong. This is so much better than the original, as many others have already said. You are doing a disservice to PTX and your Patreon.

So maybe I'm blind, but as Jordan kept referring to a Patreon, and didn't link it, I went looking for it. For anyone interested here it is: www.patreon.com/VSCREACTS. AND...he reacted to Mary Did You Know on it!!!
