Edit: There is also a video of them doing this song live & OFF MIC! It's one of their special private performances done in a dressing room meet & greet before a concert. The only mic is the one on the camera recording them, so there is no reverb from the mics like would've been on stage, & yet they sound so close to what you hear in the recording in the video. How have you known them that long & not heard this before & known they could do electronic sounds? I believe there's a live feed from a concert they gave at Brigham Young University of "Christmas Under the Stars" (or something like that) that includes "Carol of the Bells." It isn't on KZbin, though; BYU put it on their own website. And it isn't possible to search it for individual songs; you basically have to watch the whole thing.

That Carol of the Bells version is back up thankfully!
@margretrosenberg420 Жыл бұрын
@@heidi_d Thanks! A quick KZbin search on "Pentatonix carol of the bells live" just brought up four legitimate hits (where "illegitimate" is defined as either the official video or reaction videos, which I'm ruling out because I want to watch it straight through). I just watched one, a performance on _Good Morning America._ At no point did it make me feel like Mitch wasn't breathing enough - he always took a breath when I thought he should - so it isn't evidence that he used circular breathing in the official version, which is what I'm looking for (the other option being that they used editing magic to make his breaths disappear in the official version, which is possible). But I still have three to go, which I plan to get to later tonight or perhaps tomorrow (I have something else I need to take care of right now).
@heidi_d Жыл бұрын
@@margretrosenberg420 I’m not sure he does that tbh. The BYU one is impressive in that I cannot see or hear him breathe for EXTENDED periods of time, which makes me wonder if it’s circular breathing or just incredible breath control!

How have you managed to miss this till now being a PTX fan?! It's a medley of Daft Punk songs and Daft Punk were obviously electronic so it's incredible that they can do this just with their voices, especially as the video was done in a kitchen for a few hundred dollars with some ring lights and a few pairs of blue contact lenses (Kevin couldn't wear them they irritated his eyes so much, hence the groovy glasses - you can see they were irritating Avi's eyes too!). Do watch the private performance of this which has no effects, not even microphones, just sung in a hotel room. They do all the record scratching too! Yes Kirstie, Mitch and Scott sung in high school together (watch their version of telephone when they were in their teens!) but they have been friends since they were 8 years old. The arranging is done by Ben Bram, who has been with them since the Sing-off days. He's really the 6th member of PTX. You'll see him on Evergreen the making of video which is a fascinating peak into their process.

I play flute and sang in a choir and yes, you can circle breathe in both but it is so much easier to circle breathe in sustained note than a clipped phrase (on vocals). Because you are dealing with glottal stops as well as the diaphragm, it’s a lot to juggle and maintain the pace that he keeps.

You brought up the topic of writing. The writing involves the "sixth member" Ben Bram, who joined their team during the Face Off. Though they can all do arranging when needed, Ben Bram is their primary arranger. He DEFINITELY contributed to this because when it won a Grammy, his name was included. He doesn't sing - but you hear his work when they sing. By the way, it is not a song, but a medley.

Circular breathing is not something that any singer has perfected, or even attempted, to my knowledge. I do it on a trumpet, but I don't think it's possible using the voice. You just started with Pentatonix so you have no clue as to the vast array of music that Pentatonix does. They do rap, opera, contemporary, swing, 50s, 60s,70s, 80s, 90s, Soul, Metal, Hip Hop, Country & Western, religious, etc., etc. We have no idea what you like so it's hard to steer you in the right direction. They have hundreds of videos on KZbin with many Billions of views. They will continue to amaze you with their perfection in every genre of music. If you like a perfect blending of soft voices, "My Heart with You" is perfection itself. If you like a wall of sound, "The Prayer" and "The Sound of Silence" is great. If you like Rap, "The Ceiling Can't Hold Us" is for you. BTW Mitch will constantly surprize you with his voice. It's called being "Mitch Slapped". He has a 7 octave vocal range. Freddy Mercury was world famous for having a 4 1/2 octave vocal range. Have fun!

Mitch is an incredible vocal mimic as well as an amazing singer, and EDM is his favorite type of music even today. I'm sure he was listening to his favorite pieces and practicing imitating the effects with his voice - maybe that was even what inspired this off-the-chain medley of Daft Punk songs. Re the complexity of the harmonies by The Trio (their high school group name, and it's a handy way to refer to them): they always have a lot of "movement" in their parts. They refer to it exactly that way: if you watch The Recording of Evergreen (a brief documentary), you will hear them discussing how (for example) "I'm the only one with any movement here, so maybe we should do X." Most a capella groups will have their singers moving together in a single type of chord on a given section; PTX instead will have three of them on that chord for maybe a beat, and then one of them will shift to make a different chord, often a suspended chord, BTW, in that video you will also see them working with their friend and arranger Ben Bram, who is also typically their producer. But you might want to listen to the official videos, or sound recordings, or even concert videos of some of the songs that your will see them recording: The Prayer; Over the River; It's Been a Long Long Time; I Saw Three Ships.

You were talking about how it sounds like there’s so many more than three people singing and there is a reason for that. What they do is go into the studio and record multiple takes as one would do. All those takes end up going to the person who doing the editing and they’ll select say three of those takes and include them in the final recording. So that’s all Scott singing his part or Mitch singing his part but three times which gives it a fuller sound. The only voice that is a single take is the one who’s on lead for a particular segment.

If you like this, have you heard their original Love Again. Same kind of EDM type vibe, they had fun dressing up for it too, I think. There's the official video and then there's a backstage version where they were being interviewed, they sang live i think with just an overhead mic & a mic for Kevin? it's been a while since I watched it and might be mixing the mic situation up with other private performances. Also, if you just call Kirstie, Scott & Mitch the Trio, everyone will usually know who you mean. It was the name they used when they were singing together in High School. With regards to Mitch getting that electronic sound to his voice in those high parts. Firstly, he enjoys mimicking sounds and has done it a few times, like in Bohemian Rhapsody, and on The Sing Off he mimicked a violin in one song. But Secondly, I think he flips very quickly between head & mix to get that sound. And while I think he can circular breath, I don't think that's what he was doing here. I think he can also sing on the inhale, he does it for his whistle notes when he & Kirstie were 'competing' once, but because he does his on the inhale he apparently doesn't count them as true whistle notes. I think Avi can circular breathe & sing, I think we see that when he does his overtone/throat singing. As for Kevin, he has said he maximises his ability to beatbox by using both the inhale and the exhale, so not exactly circular breathing, but similar, in so much as he never needs to stop to breathe because he's taught himself to make the sounds on both in and out. At this point I'm convinced none of them are human.

Check out this video to see the original Daft Punk videos side-by-side with PTX: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jX6ZaZ6Cn5uXZrM But as someone else pointed out, I think you mean arranging, in which case Ben Bram deserves mention as he collaborates with them on many of their arrangements. He has been working with PTX since the Sing Off days.

Yep. Writing is used pretty interchangeably with arranging or composing.

I'm extremely compelled to recommend the young lady I cannot get enough of; Russian teen Diana Ankudinova, otherwise known as the "Queen of Goosebumps". Here's a mesmerizing beginning; the dark version of Elvis Presley's "Can't Help Falling In Love". kzbin.info/www/bejne/g17dn3dshrCVqMk

And to think that they recorded the vocals in a closet and the visuals in a kitchen on a budget of only a couple of hundred dollars.
