This was the last performance before America voted. They were fighting for their lives. Scott’s voice had given our in rehearsal He pulled everything out for this. TV show wanted each group to have a lead singer. And they wanted Mitch’s high voice to not be featured And tried to hide his sexuality This was the first time he sang a solo He was missing his high school graduation to be on this show. He had anxiety and shyness. But he took that solo like a boss and Scott pulled out everything They earned this BTW one week after winning they all moved to LA and record company dropped them. Sony thought a Capella Wouldn’t sell. They used their winnings money and started a you tube channel and just kept singing. This is a very sentimental performance for us pentaholics

Sony had their subsidiary Epic lined up to handle the show winner, but the new CEO at Epic didn't believe in acapella and refused to take them on. Sony shuffled them off to Madison Gate, a small subsidiary, where their first album was published. RCA, also a Sony subsidiary, asked to pick them up after their KZbin success.

Actually, Mitch had substantial solo parts in Alien, Your Love is My Drug and the Britney Spears Medley, and he did a few small solos in the opening numbers. But those were all in his mid-range tenor, and this was in his highest range, which was what it seems the producers wanted to avoid.

As someone who watched this show from episode one of that season and others, I can tell you this: All performances leading up to this one showed brief flashes and glimpses of what Pentatonix might have a chance to become. This one was the 12th performance and the one right before the judges made their decision. Most would probably agree that this is where Pentatonix went from showing the 'could' be a legitimate group on the music scene, to showing there was no doubt they 'would' be a success. In this one performance, you see what they were before, what they would become, and afterwards...you see how they've taken the world by storm. Totally amazing.

Oh, you understated the sing off. Pentatonix was 3 people, but they needed 5 to be on the sing off. They added Avi and Kevin, thank God. The day before the audition they met in person. Their fist 12 times performing together are these performances. I was lucky enough to see it as it happened. They went from really darn good to totally awesome in the season. You noticed 12 performances? This was the last of the 12. This also was the fist time Mitch did a real Mitch slap. He was so shy back then. At the very end of what you showed they all hugged Mitch! There are several awesome performances, the one I liked the best was actually number 7 (I think) doing Born to be Wild. Thanks for the reaction. 😁😁😎

this one was so iconic because it was towards the end, mitch hadn't really had a solo like that in the show so everyone was blown away when he came through with his section. scott was sick this week and apparently their dress rehearsal was a disaster with his last section but he pushed through it and really delivered for the performance. scott mitch and kirstin were only 19 they've always been so incredible

The other members of Pentatonix were so thrilled for Mitch because the show producers had discouraged them from having Mitch sing any leads. The consensus of opinion afterwards was they thought his high pitch and "effeminate" voice would discourage viewers. Homophobic much!!! After they had won the Sing Off, they wanted to showcase Mitch's voice in their early YT videos because they felt he had been slighted during the Sing Off and America never got to see what he could really do. During an interview they were asked who was the best singer and they all pointed to Mitch. They each have a unique talent and when you put them together, you get an amazing, almost religious experience. Their choir teacher in Arlington, Texas should be really proud.

This was from the 10th episode of season 3 (the semi finals) and it was their 12th performance on the "Song Off". This song was the "Judges Choice" for the group to arrange, perform and put their own spin on. The judges picked this challenging song for them to basically see what they were made of. I think this was also the first time the audience got Mitch slapped.

Their coming-out during this show - yeah, this "tiny group" came out, then the jaw drops started right from the get-go, audience, other contestants, judges. The competition started as a hurdle race - and as soon as PTX entered the fray, it became a high jump competition (the best analogy I can think of) I tend to be very bass/percussion oriented with music - for me, this is a perfect example how precisely synchronised Avi and Kevin were during their performances, Avi's bass timed with Kevin's beat is perfection to my ears. I do miss Avi's pure richness - and Matt, in his own right is an incredible voice in a different way. I could never, in all honesty choose between them.

They pretty much had the contest wrapped up at this point. They were the clear front runners. This was the final judged performance. Everyone else knew they were playing for second. They were crowned winners the next week. The record label dropped them shortly thereafter. They started posting videos on You Tube and started building their Pentaholic base. They went pretty viral with their Evolution of Music, Radio Active (with Lindsey Sterling) and started releasing EPs. Daft Punk went really viral and was on the EP PTX II. They won a Grammy and the rest is history. They are nominated for several Grammys this time around.

This is to qualify for the finals. Their first piece is E.T. They also do Love Lockdown - where I think PTX really starts to emerge (but others may say it is Video Killed the Radio Star) Their rock number is Born to be Wild - another one where I think they showed hints of what was to come and is still coming and hopefully continues to come for a long time yet.

If you're going to listen to some of the "SingOff" stuff, I'd think you'd like their cover of "Born to Be Wild" since you appreciate rock (I know that you have so many requests to cover that I won't suggest that you react to all of their performances. But I do suggest that you listen to them privately because, in that competition, you hear them find their sound and then hear the sound come together until this performance leaves everyone speechless. You would have greater appreciation of exactly what this performance was for them and in only a handful of short weeks. I think there is a compilation of all performances from Mr Duckbear perhaps? We all tend to forget the beginning and expect stuff like you just heard here but they met 2 days before the competition tryouts, I believe, and spent almost the entirety of that show 'figuring it out.'). I think the Pentatonix phenomena that blew the judges and the public away was that previous winning groups had more members and none of them 'hit it big' after the win. So for Pentatonix to have only 5 members and going up against groups that were much larger was just incredible. However, having a tight core trio complemented by a rhythm and bass section that were so solid became the formula to beat; Home Free succeeded the next season as well with the same combo.

It is so helpful to watch the Sing Off performances in order to really see how the progress and evolve. Also the little intros and the judges reactions to them. Sam Tsui did behind the scenes interviews too. It is also interesting to watch some of the other groups performances to see how innovative PTX was. So the judges did all the elimination up until the last 3 groups and then the public voted. It is probably true that if they hadn’t won, there might not have been the career of the last 10 years of PTX music. Fun fact, there were 5 seasons of the Sing Off. All the winners were all male groups, except PTX. Kirstie was the only female.

Ok, quick question: why did you go straight to the original Mitch slap? This is the final vote for the judges. You should have started from E.T. Scott had that cracking voice because it was the end of the competition and he had literally lost his voice. Avi was doing his overtone singing and if you do any more of the sing off, watch the judges comments. You missed the original pentaholic, Shawn Stockman. Watch it again, all the way to the end of the video. Worth it.

I saw an interview where they said this specific performance was their most stressful, not only because it was the final judge vote, and that they were exhausted, but also that they couldn’t seem to nail it in the dress rehearsals. When they got to the actual performance they didn’t feel confident. They all went for it, especially Scott, and it obviously paid off, but his voice was shot. Somebody check my details…we all know how these anecdotes get distorted over time. 😀 Either way, I get the frustration with the reaction, because this performance was the culmination of the up’s and down’s of the season. There were some great performances, some not so great performances (and the ‘drama’ they filmed between takings is hilarious when watched today). But if you followed the whole journey you get how hard Scott pushed during this performance, and how Mitch’s solo moment was a well-deserved middle finger to the Sing Off producers, and how real and raw Avi’s emotion’s were after the judges comments. I don’t count the 13th performance…this was the finale.

In about half of the performances on The Sing Off Avi did his amazing 'overtones' but it was never mentioned by judges however, they often praised Kevin for his sound effects when it was actually Avi. Whenever he would put his hand up over his ear you know he's doing an overtone moment. Just saying. Kevin & Avi were the killer rhythm section. I remember watching the entire season. Only performance I missed was the week 3 Joplin cover. This was the final performance with only 4 groups left. It was "judges choice" instead of something the groups picked out. Weeks 5, 10, and 12 we're stellar and showed the potential PTX that they've become. The other stellar performance this week was "Change is Gonna Come" by Afro-Blue, a group from Howard U. They were shown in this video applauding PTX. A PTX victory was all but assured at this point.

Scott wasn't "letting" his voice crack on this one; he was at the very end of his voice. That final vocal fry was his voice giving out entirely. This was the 12th episode in season 3 of _The Sing-Off,_ and the first real chance Pentatonix had had to properly introduce Mitch's talents, and they put everything they had into it, because it was also their last chance. The next performance would be the finale. The others had all had their moments in the sun, but the rule was (for that one season only) that each band had to have *one* lead singer, and PTX had been informed that their lead singer had to be Scott. What the network feared was that Mitch's high voice might raise questions about his sexual orientation and they didn't want that happening on their show, so they were deliberately trying to prevent exactly what happened here. Pentatonix had been pushing back against this policy in small ways all along. They chose songs that required a female lead, or a duet between a male and a female lead, so Kirstie had had her chances to solo. Once the judges began noticing Avi and Kevin, PTX found ways to emphasize bass and percussion - that "fight" between the two of them in the eleventh episode was a work of genius. Mitch was the only one who hadn't had a solo yet, and it was time. They set it up, made the whole performance dramatic (at considerable personal cost to Scott), and let it play out, and the judges, being musicians themselves, loved it. This is the first Mitch-slap ever, and still one of the best.

I've watched most of the other Sing-off performances on YT, I think there were 1 or 2 missing. This was their final performance and the song was picked by the judges. If you can, I would recommend checking them out in order back to back because you can really see their progress from first to final performance. They took on board any advice or criticism given (although to be fair there didn't seem much of the later as the judges loved them). They had some great performances but this was definitely the best. It was the first time Mitch showed what he could really do, I think he was so nervous & shy, didn't think he was very good (iirc he was bullied a lot in school for being gay). The trio were 19 when they sang this one, but from what I gathered, Mitch was 18 still at the beginning of the competition. It's so great to see how he's come into his own since. My 2nd fave was Video Killed the Radio Star. They had been intending to sing Cher's believe but couldn't get the arrangement to work, I think they had 2 days to go when they changed it to Video Killed The Radio Star in respect for the group who'd gone out the week before as they were going to do that one if they'd stayed in. I think that was why it was so cool to see them finally get to cover just Believe in the 90s Dance Medley, a bit of a call back to the show, I guess. I believe they had only sung together as a 5 piece for the first time the day before the show's audition. The trio (Scott, Mitch & Kirstie) of course knew each other & sang together for years, but Avi & Kev were added to fill out the band for the audition. I've heard Scott & Mitch talking somewhere about how they supposed to be heading to college etc, taking them in different directions, and the show was really their only way they could see pursuing their dream but also sticking together as friends.

PTX was formed because the Sing-Off needs at least 5 members to compete. So beside Kirstin and Mitch, they asked Avi and Kevin to join. They first met some days before the audition, and the audition was their first performance ever, singing "Telephone" by Lady Gaga. Unfortunate the audition was not filmed. So during this "Dog Days" (12th) performance, Pentatonix was probably 2-3 month old (not sure on how long the gap between the audition and the weekly performances). And as some others have mentioned, Scott lost his voice during that night's dress reheasal, and he had to sing the opening number, and their 11th performance, before this 12th performance.

Nobody had paid any particular attention to Mitch up to this point. In fact the professional advisors the show had told them to keep Mitch in the background, I don't know, thinking him a negative because he was small and had a girl's voice and all. They just weren't appreciating at that point what he was (a treasure, we know now). Also Mitch was shy and retiring, preferring to be a little invisible. But the other singers loved Mitch to pieces and knew what that voice could be and what a plus it was to their whole sound. So they took this opportunity to show him off, inventing as it was, the now famous Mitch Slap. Just spring him in there by surprise and force you to hear him. He sure isn't overlooked and underappreciated now. Over the next few years you can see him gaining his confidence and sass so that he wears it now as his own skin. Each member of this group is essential in a fundamental way.

Great reaction! Of course I want to see you react to The Prayer sometimes and if you haven't done it I bet you would like their Tribute to Star Wars. It was from an awards show and the second half of it is with an orchestra. It's quite impressive.

Hungry. Yes. The intensity and emotion they give in this gets me every time. This was the last performance before the vote for the winner, so it was do or die.

That was the one that blew the judges’ minds most. The skip was the first glimmer that Pentatonix was something special. I think Ben Folds was the first to tell them that they would make acapella cool in a whole new generation. I would love to see Ben Folds, Sara Bareilles, amd Shawn Stockman talk about the Pentatonix we have now and judge like they did on the Sing Off.

What an amazing group & an equally amazing reaction DJ. On a tangent, could you revisit the wonderful Soprano Amira , performing “ When You Wish Upon a Star “. The tone she produces is absolutely beautiful & although many would presume this is a simple, easy song to sing, I tend to disagree & would appreciate your expert, down to earth appraisal. Thanks again DJ & cheers, Graeme.

Now that you've stepped back in time to The Sing Off....you should check out Home Free on the show...the next season. All of their performances were great. And I think you will particularly enjoy Caddyshack.... You'll see why. 😊

What I think is particularly impressive about PTX in The Sing-Off Is that the songs were often chosen for them, and they had one week to develop an arrangement and rehearse it for performance. It's also continually amazing how rich and full a sound five people can create!

Could you do something about equalizing the sound volume? When I have my headphones on and have the volume set for the music, your comments blast into my eardrums. So I lower the volume, and then I can't hear the music properly, *including* listening to whatever it was you just pointed ou!

nah, it wasn't the final song. it was the last one they were really judged on, but they still did like 5 performances in the finale: - opening number - their solo performance - performance with Nick - group numbers with all the other groups (1 all female, 1 all male) - winner song

She died earlier this month in a plane crash, she was only 26 years old.TODOS OS CANTOS is a project she did, she went to ALL the capitals of Brazil to give a free concert to fans who couldn't afford to buy tickets for her concerts. She is very dear in Brazil.

I am done with you . I am subscribing, Mitch just kicked it out of the park! All you could talk about is during it you stopped it to talk about Avi. And at the end you said nothing about him. Avi and Kevin are the driving force in most of these songs, but without the others they would be just noise. Great sounding noise.

Hey man, this is turning into a Pentatonix react channel. (Idk why it feels that way to me, despite it being a thing...) I know this is kind of out of left field, but I think you would be blown away by BTS V Sweet Night. I don't actually listen to BTS, but this one song blew me away that much. His voice is so unique, in the way I find Joe Cocker unique. Just give it a try. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. I've been digging through all your stuff since finding you, but I'm really really getting sick of Pentatonix, and I don't want to let you slide down my sub list to be forgotten because I'm getting bored with the content. Just as an edit to add why I would like to see YOU in particle react: There are so many vocal coaches who react to this, but what they do and how they are trained are just not the same. I would really like to see your take. I find the way you approach these to be well-rounded, informative, and fun. Thanks for all the great vids!

@@TempleMusicAcademy That's amazing! :> I should add that I actually found the song through an insane cover by Nana Kiwis, and I'm not sure which version I enjoyed more to be honest. Also, thank you for responding so much. I love your stuff so much. As a previous choir member who's voice dropped down when I got older, it's nice to see a wide range of stuff. Totally lost on how to use it now. Haha.
