I love it when music teachers or composers or musicians do reaction videos. I find your comments (even criticisms sometimes) actually help me hear things I didn't hear before, and appreciate things I may have missed. One of the best critical/technical reviews I've ever seen of a PTX video is composer Rob Capilow's review of Angels We Have Heard On High. It really educated me on some of the technical ways PTX stands out and how something I felt instinctively was cool was actually musically and technically brilliant. I like how you pointed out the cinematography when they're all together...but they're not all together. They were all filmed separately and then put together digitally. You can tell by the lighting and how Kirstie is more focused. I think they're still recording separately and then blending it all in post, which is incredible that they can blend so beautifully even when singing alone. I definitely recommend their recent originals, particularly Happy Now. That one sounds like it should be on the radio. It truly upsets me that they don't get more radio play because they're acapella.

I am so excited that Kirstie wrote this and sang lead the entire time! I Love Her Style when she's doing pop music as The Soloist and I also loved her original music under her own label. But I have to say I like her music style and her singing with Pentatonix doing what they do better than with instruments behind her. She has the same sound, style and presence in front of the camera but Pentatonix brought a whole new level of something special that the instruments just didn't do. Kirstie and Mitch harmonizing was exquisite! And that's the sections I mean when when I'm talking about his "Angel Voice" later in this short Novel I'm writing. There is a point when Mitch was echoing what Kirstie sang, but he was singing higher than Kirdtie had. He enters his "Angel Voice" placement in that part towards the end before they break into the chorus.. and he does some runs and kind of glides around the notes in his Angel Voice like a bird gently riding the currents in the air effortlessly and beautifully! I loved that they did it that way because the two of them sound so good together! Also they did the last verse with Mitch singing a tight Harmony and the sound they created together was something else and totally new for them! I'm going to address that at the very end of this long comment that they will probably make me edit. I love what Kirstie wrote! I just love what they did with it and the choices they made... like you said they didn't get lazy and added more breaks in the vowel (repeating the consonant "W" a few times instead of holding out the vowel for a 4-count). but I think I have a surprise for you. I don't think Kevin sang that bass drop you were impressed with. Kevin is a tenor and he has the highest note in the group. He has a note higher than Mitch's highest note so listen for that when they're doing songs without percussion and they create those Exquisite 5-part harmony wall of sound! it's often Kevin you're hearing singing in the stratosphere! beatboxer, classical cellist and he takes voice lessons because he doesn't think he's as talented as the rest of the group (oh please! 😂) and ends up having the highest note in the group! They're 5 part harmonies or exquisite and sometimes they produce the most Soul jarring discordant Harmony that I can't believe they sang notes that close together and didn't cross into somebody else's note! But that's other songs. so knowing what you know about Kevin's voice now I'm going to tell you why I don't believe Kevin did that bass drop that you were so fond of. I honestly think they were doing a thing messing with what we were seeing and hearing. I believe the bass drop was made by Matt with Kevin lip-syncing it... IF my ear does not deceive me. I think I recognize Matt's Bass at this point.? Scott's bass sounds different enough for me to distinguish who is singing what now. In this Arrangement they switched the bass line around between Scott and Matt in different parts of the song so that Matt was harmonizing with Mitch. they surprised Us by having that sing in his upper register in a duet with Mitch in Mad World for the first time ! we didn't know that they could sound like that and now it's something that we need! Their voices sounded so good together that one fan combined their names to come up with something that represented them as a Duo and it would be Matt and Mitch which equals "Match" . Its a crazy combination that we had no idea they had in their Arsenal! Matt is the bass and he's singing Beautiful harmonies with a countertenor like Mitch?! Knock us over with a feather! And Scott. Scott can sing anything I think ! He is so determined to learn how to do things sorry and he applied it to the lower end of his range and I think Scott sounds amazing as a bass! I think he's worked on it and has really come to own that part of his range. He sounds confident and is in control of it, never sounding like he's straining to hit the notes so that gives them another resource to pull from their bag of tricks! well when they wanted Matt to be singing in his upper register harmonizing with Mitch in this song They simply had Scott take over the bass and it was a rhythmic bassline he was doing. That's a whole nother skill to be able to have the Rhythm to work with the percussionist. The Rhythm Section is so important! And boy did they switch people around in this one! You almost have to look at their mouths to see what parts they're doing to catch that Matt and Scott have switched roles. I'm sure you'll notice that when you dive in and tear it apart! And Mitch was singing in a way that sounds ethereal to me. He's not at his highest notes but something he's doing makes it sound angelic instead of a forward placement on his high notes Mask. He has power in that placement and can belt those high notes! but we get that cartoony sound . I know that's normal for forward placement when you put it right there in the front of your face in the mask and it's an accepted technique... which has done amazing things with that placement . I just have this thing about certain parts of his range and he's using them more now . I love when Mitch uses his chest voice or the can you come High ephereal, Angelic sound that I call his "Angel Voice" placement because I don't know what it's really called! Is there's a name for what he's doing? Is it a placement or technique?

OK, I am stoked that you picked up on all of the subtle evidences of their multiple talents. You will find that we Pentaholics are extremely passionate about Ptx - not just their songs, but because we already know that the reason for their fame & popularity is that aside from each of them being out-of-this-world talented in their individual right, there is a magic that exists when they sing together. Building on that statement, they have a collective ability to know how to put music together in such a way that best showcases that magic. They are creative geniuses & you can see how they produce their videos to show their perfectionism. They are NEVER lazy when arranging music, & you'll never hear a sloppy note anywhere in their performances. Also, each individual can perform many functions & back each other up well. For instance, when Matt is singing lead, Scott can take over bass like a pro. You are just starting out, so you are in for such a journey of discovery. Prepare to have your mind blown! My suggestions for the next few songs to react to are: Daft Punk, Halleluja, Mary, Did You Know and (because you are a fellow choir/music nerd & will appreciate what they are able to do verbally) I suggest you listen to "Run to You", one of their originals, a very soft & emotional song. After that, they do a killer version of The Sound if Silence & Shallow. There are so, so many. And they are ALL good, as Ptx is incapable of recording a song that is anything but phenomenal. So you can pretty much close your eyes and point and you can't go wrong. Enjoy this journey! We WILL be on it with you!!! Much love, Mama BJ (Bev)

Outstanding analogy of the music and I've become a subscriber. I love taking apart songs as a musician/composer.

Great reaction, thank you - love your insight and ear. Just love this song - It has the feel of an 'Enya' track in the background but it's all mind blowing vocal talent. Eagerly awaiting the next reaction :)

It’s funny how you thought of Pan’s Labyrinth and I was thinking of Labyrinth with David Bowie and the crystal balls, where he juggles them and the scene where she’s in it dancing in a drugged up trance Lol - I’m lovin your analyses- just subbed 🥰

Great inside information you add. You remind me of my old band director in school. Love it. If you like PTX you may want to check out Home Free. A mostly country A Cappella group. Their bassist and tennor is in creditable. Man of constant sorrow, ring of fire (with Avi from PTX) and End of the road covers are incredible 👌.

Love the analysis. If you like this original, I highly recommend Happy Now which is the other original that came out recently. Off to find some ninjas to fight now... 🤺

After the first handful of notes I thought this was an Enya cover...

I'm with you on this i felt it definitely had an Enya feel. Hi all you Pentaholics from Australia.

Yeah, it has a sound reminiscent of Orinoco Flow, I think.

So THAT was the weird vibe xDDD I thought "wait, I know this melody" and couldn't get it out of my head, and came done to the comments just to find out if I wasn't alone xD

Check out Homefree. They are another a capella groupan they are amazing. Tim Foust their bass has like a five octave range and has hit some of the lowest notes I've heard. You can start with their cover Mayday or How great thou art. They have many covers and original songs.
@purplesky0014 жыл бұрын
No, don't start with Mayday. Keep that in the pocket until you get to know them better.

Love your reactions! Music nerds alive. I love your tidbits of technical info, techniques, and terminology. And how you described that wonderful unusual rhythm of the chorus.
