its training. quoth Adam Neely ; "Repetition legitimizes Repetition legitimizes Repetition legitimizes Repetition legitimizes Repetition legitimizes Repetition legitimizes Repetition legitimizes Repetition legitimizes Repetition legitimizes " no, seriously. first your ears learn what a note is supposed to sound like, then you can call it on hearing it, then your muscle memory kinda learns what thing makes that note and so on. i´m somewhere around know what a note is supposed to sound like, but still having to search for it a short while.

I have to comment again. Nothing makes me happier than to see this dude randomly and instinctively just JUMP IN and figure out the music AS he's listening to it, IMMEDIATELY adding things that he's hearing in his own head that match SO perfectly with the song. its CRAZY. Great job man.

There’s a good reason why people went crazy over this song; unlike most modern pop songs, this has a lot of “musicality” to it. There’s complex rhythms, a fantastic Motown-esque bassline, key changes, interesting chord progressions, textural variations, etc.

But the main reason why it got so popular and got a top 10 in the charts was because they still managed to make it sound modern and relevant to today’s music even with the 70s vibes and unique chords, with the lyrics and singing style. This song was so cleverly composed and recorded, Bruno Mars knows how to make a hit while still playing with his favourite styles of music

Only thing I wish is that they recorded these songs without a click track. This one is at 74bpm. I could feel that something was missing and didn't feel as good as it could and lo and behold - it was definitely recorded with a click. These musicians are so stellar that they absolutely do not need a click track and the music would ebb, flow and breath more and just overall groove harder if they just went free ballin! IMHO

Excellent musical analysis. I fell in love with this song as soon as I heard it, and the love affair has only deepened since. Anderson .Paak and Bruno Mars have created a modern masterpiece that borrows only the best from the past. The Something else about this song struck me - it’s a post me too movement love song. So many love songs are disempowering and downright desperate “I’ll die without you...” “Leave the Door Open” is lush, playful, and direct but leaves the ball in the woman’s court. He wants her, adores her, loves her but what he wants is secondary to what she wants and chooses.

For me it was a huge amount of the past rolled up into one fantastic song. There are so many influences in this, mood shifts and the vocals are amazing.

I first heard this song a little before the grammys and (wildly out of touch) felt like I had stumbled onto this great little known musical treasure. Then I looked at the views and saw 535,000,000! Needless to say I was not even, vaguely, on any planet close to somehow discovering this. I am however thrilled that I'm finally on board with what-seemingly-much of the world recognizes as a great, extremely fun, extremely musical band. Nice reaction David.

I enjoyed your commentary as much as I enjoyed you grooving to this new timeless classic!! Its SUCH a GREAT SONG for all the reasons you mentioned. While it's been said in other interviews that Anderson Paak's drumming was the feature in this song, I couldn't help but realize how there is ONE cymbal on the kit compared to about the average of 4-5 on the kits of most, played in contemporary music of the past 15 or so years; everything from Rock, Pop and R&B.

This was such a great review. I’m a pianist and I still don’t understand how you can just hear the song and know exactly the key and start playing. Mad skills…I was never very good at aural stuff so I’m envious! Haha

This review is as pure and as natural as the song being reviewed. There's a lot of review/reaction videos you can find here in youtube for this song. But the way David reviewed it, he's not only putting the right words, but also the "fitting" reaction. It is exactly how you would feel watching/listening to this video. Indeed, this song is just perfect. I won't get tired listening to it especially on weekends sitting on your porch, relaxing, drinking coffee, tea, or beer. Subscribed!
