Nice to see this performance of Paco on a British tv show.Bulerias are often played with hand clapping percussion and even a second guitar for rythm.Paco was playing since he was a child and did some flamenco recordings at 11,12,13 years old backing his brother Pepe on vocals. He never learned to read music,so when he recorded Manuel de Falla´s or Rodrigo´s music with a symphonic orchestra he learned his parts by ear. What a musician!

Check out the "Friday night in San Francisco" recording of Paco de Lucia playing with John McLaughlin and Al di Meola - 3 guitars instrumental. Also check out the recordings of El Camarón de la Isla, a Spanish singer who performed with Paco in his band. As this video is about the Bulerias, it would be nice to experience what happens when there's a band of, say, two guitarists and a few hand clappers plus a singer. The other famous Spanish guitarist i this band was nicknamed Tomatito. Sung bulerias: Viejo Mundo, Arte y Majestad, La Jaca Que Yo Teniá, Bulerias de la Perla.

Tomatito never was part of Paco's band. He was the guitarist of Camaron. I must say that I never liked Camaron. Jose Merce, yes.

@@nicolasdelaforge7420 - thank you for the correction - my bad ambiguity. The antecedent to "his" in "his band" was meant to be El Camarón. And I meant "band" as a variant of a potentially ad-hoc "orchestra" in a musical sense, not legal.

This is the early Paco, before his prime, which he reached around 1982 - playing and composing. No one so far composed like him, and possibly never played like that, in Flamenco. My wife and I saw him 6 times in San Francisco/ Berkeley and one last time in 2012 in Las Vegas, with Farru! Even though he had slowed down by then, it was still Paco. When Amigo came, for example, it wasn't the same level. Also, Paco formed amazing "bands" - to produce new versions of his solo compositions.

The buleria compas... the drums of war and agility.. bum tak tak bum tak tak bum tak bum tak bum tak, from start to finish, no change, to keep the unity of subject..because in flamenco, the beat is responsible for defining the prevailing emotions of the piece, and flamenco recognizes a few emotions as standard human emotions like solea, fandango, alergia, buleria, sugria However Paco does a great use of beat syncabation The melody is a brielient costumizations of a collectetion of folklore falestas

Pffff, tricky one. In standard Spanish it would be pronounced "looth-ee-ah". Being from the Cádiz province, where they do "ceceo" (but also "seseo" in e.g. the city of Cádiz), he may have pronounced his own name (his mother's name, actually) as either "looth-ee-ah" or "loos-ee-ah". For the rest of us: it is pronounced as either of those two, depending on the region or country the speaker is from.
