Paco was a national hero in Spain.He did learn to read music late in his life in order to play Rodrigo's guitar concerto with an orchestra.A phenomenal guitarist,try listening to the guitar trio "a night in San Francisco",Paco de Lucia,Al de Meola and John Mclaughlin,three masters..

@@jennifersmusicpage He certainly was,sadly he died a few years back.Ive been involved in music since I was a boy,was classical trained on trombone and learnt guitar from my father.I can play to a reasonable standard due to 40 years of daily practice and playing in bands but have never got nowhere near his level,nor will I ever be,lol....also Paco played the Spanish guitar part on Bryan Adams have you ever really loved a woman

His version of Rodrigo Concerto 2nd movement is the best ever in my opinion. It’s effortless, has the deepest emotion and the most graceful ornaments.

Flamenco guitar is not like folk or classical guitar. He did play some classics, but the technique is not classical. He didn't know music theory, he felt it. He was brought up in it and taught orally. His work with John McLaughlin and Al di Meola changed the way he developed the flamenco of today (not the purists form). He played from the heart and disciplined himself to the point of sickness. Paco de Lucia brought so much to flamenco, bringing lots of harmonic developments that were unheard of in flamenco. I miss him much. But one of his students is Ruben Diaz flamenco - who knows everything there is to know about Paco and his skills. Tico Tico is beautiful, but it is just a commercial tune. Before Paco, there was a limited chord cadence. Then Paco made flamenco very interesting.

He never studied at the conservatory, in fact his father took him out of school at the age of 10, he did not know how to read sheet music. 🙋

Paco did eventually learn to read music in order to play Rodrigo's guitar concerto with an orchestra.Greatest of all flamenco guitarists in mine and many others opinion..

@@ladulf3474 it was late in his life,most of his life he did not know,like most guitarists.I only read about it so may be wrong but makes sense when playing with an orchestra

I've been playing guitar since I was 4 and still can't read sheet music for it, but am fluent in reading music for piano and orchestrations. Guitar is a nightmare for theory and sight-reading lol. Even then, I was able to play advanced guitar without being able to read anything other than tabs; just need to know your progressions, chords, and theory. I also dropped out of music school and got really good, so maybe there's something to it.

Oh, Paco was just a baby here. Twenty years old or so, but already at least ten years into his professional career. You really must check out his mature playing and his own compositions!! Look up the Sevillanas duet he played with Manolo Sanlúcar on KZbin. Jaw dropping playing and fascinating use of harmony, melody, and rhythm. A musician’s dream!

The original song is Brazilian in the "choro" or "chorinho" style and the full name is "Tico-tico no fubá". It was composed by Zequinha de Abreu and was performed for the first time in 1917. I think you should listen to a Bulerias by Paco. In essence a bulerias is a type of compas. It has a repeating rhythm of 12 beats, grouped into two threes then three twos. The accent is on the end of each group, so 3, 6, 8, 10 and 12. And the bulerias starts on beat 12. Usually it uses an andulasian cadence as a backbone and incorporates the flamenco 9 note scale, rooted in the Phrygian mode, (uses a natural and sharpened third as well as a natural and sharpened 7th)
