This lesson is why Chris Sherland is my go-to guy on KZbin. I just wish I had this knowledge 30 years ago! As I've learned, the fretboard is a life-long study, but this video is sure a great place to start. Thanks, Mr. Sherland!

You can't quite understand how important this is until you realize how very useful this theory stuff is. Much like cooking, you may have all the ingredients. But not knowing what order to put them is another story altogether. With practice/study, we can figure it out. Thanks, Chris!

I think one thing that just occurred to me as I've never thought about it like this before is starting with each string open and counting up the frets is you're always going to end up at the same place i.e. the 12th fret. Excellent approach 👍

Thank you for your videos, you’re a life saver. I’m mostly self taught with guitar lessons here and there, and I’ve had a lot of gaps in my music theory knowledge over the past year or so. Your channel has really helped me in teaching myself guitar, and now I’ll have some skills to show my new guitar teacher I’m starting up with at the end of this month! Thank you.😄

I just started teaching myself to play a little less than a year ago, learned some songs, but when I realized I had no idea why I play them that way, I decided it was time to learn some music theory. My first road block was immediate, and it was "I don't know where to start". Thank you so much for this video. Crazy helpful to me!

@curiousguitarist If I could give a turbo thumbs up, I would. The only part that felt a bit underdeveloped is when you introduce the idea of how many fingers are used per string walking a scale progression. This is something that has puzzled me at first seeing guitarist friends walk scales from the headstock up to the neck. I guess it shows that not being aware of the neck navigation with respect to where notes are is the base problem to this... Thanks
@curiousguitarist
@curiousguitarist 9 ай бұрын
Yeah, that notes-per-string idea is powerful...I could do a whole video on that. I really only introduced it here to demonstrate potential more than anything. Thanks for the kind words, Marc. I appreciate it.

@@curiousguitarist I feel this is why the guitar learning process is so intimidating at first. The guitar fretboard is like having something like 3 piano keyboards stacked on top of each other. There is so much places you can play a given note. Why here instead of there ? Possibly "finger-walking economy" and such, but at first, you just don't get it. On a piano, every note is living at a single place and it's linear. A guitar is kind of migrating from a 1 axis system to a two axis (two dimensions for the mathematicians 🙂) system. I guess that what I've said above is the explanation of > why < you need to learn the notes on the fretboard early in your journey ! ... To get the overwhelming feeling to go away ! ... And start seeing all this making sense. I like to see a video talking about this aspect of the guitar if you don't have it already made. Thanks Chris for all that valuable content. Much appreciated.

Do you have a recommendation for memorizing fretboard notes and/or notes in each chord (guitar specific of course) like a Quizlet set or ??
@curiousguitarist
@curiousguitarist 8 ай бұрын
Here's a vid for learning the note locations on the fretboard. kzbin.info/www/bejne/g2e4cpqfatODr6c For chord note memorization I would recommend analyzing the notes in the chords you already know how to play. Tear them down and find the notes...you learn a LOT more that way IMHO. ...teach a man to fish...

@@curiousguitarist well do. I actually read music and play a few instruments. Been playing guitar for too long to not know theory. But I’m only a chord guy. (Sadly never took the time) but!!! My 12 y/o is getting a Taylor 210 for Christmas and is real motivated. So I’m thinker You - Marty- Her and I can learn together.

Why don't you show how to approach the theory behind the guitar solo purple haze and hotel California because this will teach non-theory guitarist how to figure out the theory of the scale notes relations with the chord changes. Purple haze solo is based on modal theory while Hotel california is based on adding in notes that aren't in the pentatonic scale plus the chord progression is NOT diatonic in one key.
