It's always a treat to see this band once a year at this event and as with every year, they never disappoint! Congratulations, Mt. Carmel, on a fine job with a march that I've never heard any other band play in all my years of documenting events. And that Auxiliary!! - Excellent, well-executed routine!!

I LOVED every bit of this performance. The Sundevils were super awesome with this debut. This and Chino’s performance were my absolute personal favorites for this whole event. All performances were outstanding today but MC and Chino seriously stole my heart. Congratulations on the sweep. Despite that penalty, I’m looking forward to a stronger comeback next year.

I feel like this will bring up a weird situation next year. If Mt Carmel drop down a division due to their penalty, could we see band or guard sweepstakes won by a band that’s not in AA? Also, nice to see their guard get the recognition they deserve. I personally believe they got snuffed in 2019. Congrats Mt. Carmel!

To answer your question although it’s a bit late, it is indeed possible for bands in other classes to win sweepstakes awards either overall or music or in auxiliary scores. A prime example was Thousand Oaks High School taking overall And music Sweepstakes awards in AFOB 1996- they were class A band that stole the trophy away from Mt Carmel. Of course Mt Carmel, Rancho Bernardo, Poway, El Dorado and Vista who were all Class AA bands that year. It seemed that this 96-97 school year and a series of other questioned events and how bands scored that led to several changes in classification systems for the upcoming years and has eventually lead to the way Arcadia sets up their current band lineup. However it’s up to the event hosts to choose how to classify a participating band and create the event lineup. But most successful band reviews structure it to the likes of today’s AFOB.

I think that if the whole band block crosses the competition line before the march starts then you get the penalty.

I was going to ask how smaller bands overcome this but looking at other videos they either hold for the rolloff or make it super short. Hoping that MC's parade block is smaller because of the pandemic. Nonetheless, I'm an alum of this program and could not be prouder. Let's go Sundevils!

@@squirtle our program was hit hard by the pandemic (we’re the size of a 4A band) but it seemed to work out as the season progressed. would’ve gotten 2nd in parade if not for the penalty :)
