Their most “Gentle Giant like” track is probably Crystallized and it is really good.

And now, I'd definitely say Elephants Never Forget.

Something about the muppet drummer counting sub decisions with its mouth broke me down

Gentle Giant were my heroes and they have found their substitute in our times! Haken is my favorite for some years now! BUT: Aquarius is the album to check out. Masterpiece!

My favorite concept album of all time. And yes I know Scenes From a Memory, The Wall, Operation Mindcrime and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway exists.

If you're up for longer ones, i'd like to suggest Crystallized, Falling Back To Earth, Carousel, Pareidolia, Celestial Elixir, Visions, Messiah Complex I-V or Nocturnal Conspiracy from them. They are all awesome songs, no matter which one you pick, you won't regret it.

I would also add “The Architect” to that list; my all-time favorite

So, I see what you meant. Haken is one of my favorite bands. If and when you have the time, check out their IMO most Epic Masterpiece, Visions.

There's a live video of Haken's "Celestial Elixir" that's mind-blowing. Check it out sometime.

Maaan I'm so glad you did Haken! Hoping for more to come, they're one of my dearest bands... Maybe next 'Falling Back To Earth', from the same album?

I love the Affinity album. The Architect, 1985 and Endless Knot are on my rotation, every once in awhile I go through the entire album. Cockroach King which I also found after listening to the Affinity album is one of my favorites. I will admit that I have never seen the video and I wasn't expecting the muppets. Quite interesting.

Besides all what you underline and explain, I find the lyrics of this track very interesting and deep

So many fun little quips. "Toking on the roach of irony," "Choking on the roach of fallacy." I think the latter is a three-way pun.

You should listen to the full version of this song now. Even better than this one in my opinion!

Never heard of these. Got a new band to delve into now thanks! Oh and yes I got the Grange Hill bit.

I really enjoyed your analysis! Thorough, not just oohing and aahing at the awesomeness (which would also be understandable).

You need to do some more HAKEN. Check out their latest song Nightingale from their upcoming album. It's a bit different than some of their previous work, and features their new keys player.

Actually, it's their original keyboard player, returned back to the fold!

Hello John. Ross Jennings did name check Gentle Giant as one of his influences during an interview-might have been with Dr Doug Helvering. Best wishes from Stroud. Rhodri.

I'm 8-minutes in and I'm surprised you haven't mentioned King Crimson!

I discovered this particular song having wandered off down a Crimson rabbit hole one night. I know what you mean but, musically, not like Crimson at all. Even though that’s how I got to hear it.
@overtheoverseer4 ай бұрын
@kevinbrown3082 the Cockroach King is clearly a nod to The Court of the Crimson King.
@kevinbrown30824 ай бұрын
@@overtheoverseer Cockroach King/ Crimson King. I get it. The title of the song is definitely a nod to the mighty KC. But musically, nowhere near. More Zappa than Crimson.

I love Haken (and Gentle Giant) although this song is not in my list of favorites. The mountain, Affinity are favorite albums. Virus is also very good. The band IQ might be interesting to you. Same genre, great quality albums. Very underrated band. Riverside Riverwood Ayreon. Avantasia

IMO, Watershed was where Opeth began the progressive metal transition. Heritage was all Jethro Tull esque prog metal. Love Haken. Well done John!
@kevinbrown30824 ай бұрын
It’s pronounced Haken as in Taken. Like the film. As told to me and the rest of the the audience at a show in Birmingham once. Am I late here? Yes I am. I’m late to everything. This band is fantastic. You really should dig deep. Live, they’re even more spectacular.
