Hi again and thanks for the breakdown. One major part of their sound is that both guitars almost never play the same thing. Even on riffs, one guitar will add another inversion, octaves or some spacey tapestry thing. That is also one of the main reason why sometimes stuff gets lost in the live mix. It's almost impossible to have all those elements sitting properly in the mix, cause the musical emphasis changes every other bar (which is the case in most recent GS songs). During the first waltzy jazz-part, that wasn't bass, that was Hana playing the walking line on guitar. The "drills" have no plecs like the Paul Gilbert ones (he is up to 4 attached pics now haha). They are just electronic toy guns interfering with the pickups. Nanmaida was written by Hana and has many different parts, cause it's to be a reflection of the tumultuous band history (which includes a lot of difficult situations). That's why the title should be understood as "Lord have mercy, what happened now? Come on, can't we catch a break?" Cheers :)

In my opinion they're the best rock band out there today. Fantastic musicians and performers!

Thanks JW - love your reactions as always. In terms of the musical theatre thing, the band have always said their genre is "entertainment" so rather than any particular style the aim is to put on a show (this went to some extremes in earlier iterations which we may get to...) the performance aspect is therefore very important to them. However, a number of reactors get sucked in by that and miss the technical ability going on behind it (though its harder to miss in this one!) so I appreciate you appreciating them for that, whilst also enjoying the show. Cheers OG HG 😊

This really is one of their most extreme songs. Personally I love it but I'm not sure I would have done if it were my introduction to Gacharic Spin. It's a great one for you to break down though. One of the things I love about GS, and for me is so far unique to the Japanese scene, is that they manage to be technical and experimental while still being so expressive and full of energy. I can listen carefully and be impressed as if i were listening to Polyphia or Dirty Loops, or I can relax and have my soul moved as if I were listening to Pink Floyd or Iron Maiden.

My favorite GACHAPIN live performance is this one, as as they open their set at NAONのYAON 2023, the Tokyo festival celebrating female musicians, with an explosive rendition of REVERSE PSYCHOLOGY and THE COME UP CHAPTER, also from W - kzbin.info/www/bejne/m3apiptpjM6smKM

Gacharic Spin doing Gacharic Spin, that's the genre. I was lucky enough to see them that night. The video's of this show don't do the concert justice. So much fun and energy, they make the Energizer Bunny look ancient. Great song, better reaction. Thanks!!

Great commentary! It is indeed an interesting question what genre is Gacharic Spin? In my ears, where they are right now (in album Ace), it is somewhere in the middle between punk, prog and funk. It turns out this is exactly the sweet spot for me too. Musical theatre influence, one thinks immediately of their song Magic Umbrella Girl.

For a band that is known for using a variety of genres in a chaotic, dense sound that flows, this one is almost off the charts. I would love to see GS live. Also, everyone wishes that Tomo-zo's guitar was a bit higher in the mix.

Your analysis is always interesting. Analyzing this band won't give you a break lol. They try all kinds of genres. Since you are knowledgeable about music and are passionate about research, you should only listen to this band's songs when your body is full of energy and your mind is clear. It must be nerve-wracking. I listen to this band's songs to get motivated when I want to get energized, so maybe it's the opposite of you lol.

Great reaction.👍 Great band, great song and great performance... it's a shame the recording and mixing weren't that good.😐 That's why I love their live videos from 2018 and 2019 so much, great performances with great sound.😍

As others have said, it's not drills being used here but plastic toy rayguns, which was first popularised as an effect in the guitar solo for 'Rebel Yell' by Steve Stevens of Billy Idol and Top Gun theme fame. Wouldn't be surprised if Tomo-zo and Hana are also familiar with Mr. Big though.

Good pick Entertainment/fun aspect was always something they were striving for, bassist Koga is big fan of K.I.S.S, so she always wanted to have a band where music wouldn't be the only focus, but also try to entertain the audience in other ways as well. That might include lots of crowd interaction, songs having choreo or even having skits/talking segments in between the songs. As for being influenced by musical theatre, I'm not sure about that (at least not the traditional kind of theatre 😄). TOMO-ZO's songs is probably the closest they get to musical theatre, but in general I don't think that any of the members are that much into musical theatre.

I discovered that a couple of years ago you did a reaction to Wicked Game performed by this fantastic vocalist who performed this song at the age of 15. Is the best female voice really only worthy of one reaction? Diana will soon turn 21 years old.

I noticed you love classical music, and Japanese bands - so Try Swan song from Lovebites, but the older version, I guess from 2019 or 2020. Not the 2023 version.

There's a few channels that I'll watch for my favourite bands and then there's your channel. I'll watch the videos for your reaction/breakdown, not necessarily for the music. Like in this case with another J-rock/metal all female band in the Lovebites/Band-Maid vein that seems based on kind of a formula. Lots that doesn't click with me and some things that I really dislike, starting with incredibly weak vocal performances and the never absent near-infantile kawaii aesthetic. It may all be technically quite sophisticated, but to me it's still soulless & plastic. That said, your analysis is always on point and very informative/entertaining. I know you're not big on vocals, which might make it easier to appreciate the intricate way songs like these are crafted. Cheers from Amsterdam! 🤘

"... in the Lovebites/Band-Maid vein that seems based on kind of a formula..." - No likeness at all between those bands. And I'd really be interested by the formula for GS. If you'd have said that for a band like BabyMetal, where there indeed is a "formula" behind it, I'd understand. If you think a band playing a certain style is a formula, well, then AC/DC would be a formulaic band. Or do you mean that they are all female and play some kind of rock music? Also have to disagree with the weak vocal performance, but I have to admit that vocals are most likely to be a dividing point between listeners. And kawaii aesthetic has nothing to do with "infants", it's a cultural thing. The ladies here are mostly in the upper 30s, so ... But, as you said, it's soulless and plastic TO YOU, so all is well, we all like different stuff. Wonder what kind of music you like, that isn't soulless? Cheers to Amsterdam :)

@@amiwolf8117 I appreciate the effort you put into your comment but people like this are probably not worth engaging with. Fine if they don't like the music, but when they're making such self-evidently absurd criticisms and applying them to musically diverse bands who happen to have the same race and gender, it's obvious where the hate is coming from.
@MaartenT
@MaartenT 3 ай бұрын
@@kicorseI don't know if I would call it hate as I honestly feel like the criticism isn't overly abrasive. But this is most likely the type of criticism/close mindedness most Japanese bands do have to deal with trying to break out in the West whether we like it or not. Honestly, some of it (mostly the vocals and happy melodies) is what was the most difficult for me to get used to as well (apart from the outfits) coming from having listened to all kinds of metal including black metal and death metal for 20 years or so before finally caving and giving a couple of the Japanese bands a shot (after years of purposefully ignoring them). I can tell you from my experience that I didn't like Gacharic Spin when I heard them first either and wrote them off pretty quickly. It changed with MindSet, which I loved on first listen, but I only got used to their early stuff because of the live performances and I was more used to Japanese music by then. I can't fault people for not liking what they hear if they genuinely sat through a reaction/breakdown. It might click with them after a while or it might not. I agree that calling them the same vein as Band-Maid/Lovebites is strange with how different the 3 of them are musically, but they might have only checked out a small amount of tracks and it's easy to get hung up on the aesthetics (outfits) and don't listen super carefully when you are not into it. Only time will tell, I personally much prefer this kind of comment than some others I have seen over the years, it at least shows they try to listen.
@kicorse
@kicorse 3 ай бұрын
@@MaartenT It took me a while with Gacharic Spin too and I also wouldn't fault anyone for not liking them (or any other band that I like). We all have our own taste. But claiming that three all-female Japanese bands who play such different music from one another, two of whom are themselves extremely musically diverse, are using a "formula": that's a smoking gun as far as I'm concerned. That and the focus on how they dress. In a different context, I could put down the other insults to differences in personal taste, but not in this context.
@MaartenT
@MaartenT 3 ай бұрын
@@kicorse This comment still might have been me before actually trying to dive into the Japanese scene though. I would not have called anything bad as I don't believe there can be "bad" art (just stuff I don't like), but I might have lumped them all together because of the aesthetics at first.The major click for me was understanding how ridiculous black metal artists were dressing among so many other bands have done and it didn't really bother me too much after that. I do think a lot of the Japanese bands might have an easier time breaking through in the West if they didn't dress in outfits but it is just in the Japanese DNA to do that so there is that. I assume they just haven't heard a lot of Band-Maid/Lovebites and mainly know them because of all the reactions that are done to them and named them because of that.
