Instead of complaining about a stage direction you don't understand, could someone maybe mention the glorious singing of Catherine Naglestad? A belcanto-like ease and fluid legato in the soft parts, and beautiful blooming of a large (but always round and never strident) voice at the end. She produces all that with a beautiful, concentrated calm that at the same time suggests an internal high-strung extasy. For me, the ideal Senta.

A year late, but yes, you're right. The production is what we occasionally get from the DNO (try their Don Giovanni) vulgar, absurd, director's opera at its very baffling worst. BUT! Naglestad is an awesome Senta. A singing actress (or acting singer) so accomplished that she grabs you by the throat, be it in Wagner or -at the other end- Handel. Hartmut Haenchen deserves credit for his inspired conducting. How he did that having to witness all the bizarre goings-on on the stage is beyond me.

Agree. Naglestad Is superb. as are the orchestra and conductor. So on CD I would recommend it. But as a viewing experience it's an affront, not only to me but to Wagner's genius.

interesting take on this - I'm guessing they've adapted it to be in the world today instead of "back then" - of course the spinning wheel was interesting to still include, wonder why she wasn't knitting a sweater. Love love love this woman's voice - Catherine makes the perfect Senta! Bravo!

I haven´t seen the entire production but after a minute I have some ideas what the scenery could be about. Instead of mocking everything that looks different, I´d rather start my thinking engines and take a guess what else the story could be about than some Norwegian girl waiting for salvation ;-)

geez, I HATE these modern settings y do opera companies always Eff with Wagner's operas? I'm a traditionalist and it makes no sense for Senta being the only one to use a 19th-century spinning wheel today. Love the singers though and the delightful melody beginning with an oboe for the theme.

Former Regietheater becomes Euro Trash. Let's hope there will be times we see operas at stage again not nightmares of stage directors.

Mary is great, the choir is great. Eric is good. Senta is not bad. Her singing is a little bit cold. Moreover she does not sing very clearly. The production itself is let us say questionable. I get the point why Senta is the only one with a spinning wheel but WHAT THE HELL about these guys with the sweaters in the background? What is the point of them????
Not exactly. But there should be a bit of a ship somewhere.
@polyanthajones81685 жыл бұрын
@@2alberich2 Senta is NOT on a ship, she is with her girlfriends who are all about being nice and pretty and a nice catch for men, whereas Senta has this dream of saving the mysterious man from the old story. So the Sauna-Spa-beauty-Salon thing is not so far-fetched.
