Fun fact: the “cartoon part” of the song is actually pulled from “Powerhouse” by Raymond Scott. It was used in early cartoons back in the 1930’s. The Scott estate actually requested compensation from Rush for using it, however, the legal statute of limitations had expired, so Rush wasn’t legally required to. That being said, Rush did send the estate a payment as an apology anyway. Just shows what great people they are. Can’t wait for 2112!!! Do Xanadu after that one…Great reaction! 😎

@@mycroft16 Ever since I learned about this, which was maybe 5 years ago, I keep wondering what I would think if they hadn't done anything for Raymond Scott's estate. Would I just think of it as a business move and no big deal, or would I think wow, what a cruddy thing to do...were they really the decent people I always believed them to be (and then feel oddly guilty when listening to La Villa)? But of course we know Rush did what one would have expected: the right thing. Really, it was a pretty obvious song grab, but I would bet that it was a young-and-dumb-artist thing where Rush didn't really appreciate what infringement was.

That's very funny. When I was in high school, playing trumpet in the school band, Rush was the band of choice. I went in one day, and a percussionist (who knew how into Rush I was) got my attention and started playing the drum part that begins at 4:25. He did it really well, too! Not sure if he felt he got it right though! That was...1982 I guess.

There was a kid in my social studies class, sophmore year, every day he's coming in telling me how great Rush is, Moving Pictures, he's drawing Rush logo's all over his folders, always with the lyrics, after a couple of months I thought ok, I have to check out this album. (The AM radio in the car didn't quite do it for rock). So, my mom takes me to JC Penny and buys me MP - after asking the clerk if they had any particular problems with the vinyl from this band. I always thought that was so funny - what was the clerk going to say? "Yeah! Every band but this one we get great quality control on their albums, but theeeese guys, never!" Anyway, I listened once on this portable turntable I had and thought what's the big deal. Listened a second time because for 8 bucks I wasn't gonna just throw that away. Second time I thought, oh, there are a couple of interesting parts here and there. Third time through I was done for. Hooked like a fish that swallowed the bait up to its backside. I realized later on that I had actually listened to Hemispheres a couple of times a few years prior. A girl I was hopelessly in love with in 9th grade played it for me on cassette, and the same at a church retreat a year or two prior to that, I guess when it first came out - but I didn't realize that until I actually purchased my own copy of Hemispheres and realized I'd heard it before. I remember sitting next to that cassette, especially during the church retreat, and just getting fully absorbed into the music - one of those moments where nobody disturbs you for an hour, you're young, and your mind sponges things up. The same friend that introduced me to Rush had a membership in something or other that allowed him to reserve these particular seats when a band came to town, and he promised me one of those seats. Tour happens, they come to town....and we are visiting my sister at college that weekend. She's joining a sorority, and it is....I wish this was a joke....rush weekend for the new pledges to the sorority. Figures, right? So, I had to wait until senior year to see them in April, 1983. In all, I had the good fortune to see them nearly 30 times: Toronto (Molson Amphitheatre, Maple Leaf Gardens, the...I think it is called the Molson Centre), Buffalo (Memorial Auditorium, HSBC Arena as it was then called, and Darien Lakes), Hamilton, Rochester, Washington DC, Saratoga Springs, Pittsburgh at the Igloo. Lots of great memories. Sorry for such a long story, but I'm hoping to hear your intro-to-Rush story as well. To me that's a lot of the funs stuff!

@@ceilingunlimited2430 Rush was on my peripheral when I was in Junior High because of the Fly by Night and 2112 patches my cousin had on his jacket, that’s also when I was starting to play drums. The first song I heard was Spirit of Radio about a year later and loved both it and Circumstances which was the B-side of the 45 my friend had. 1981 I’m a freshman and my older brother had to drive me to school with him, he was a senior. On those rides he introduced me to two things, daily pot smoking and 2112. I was hooked on both but especially Rush which has never wavered. Seeing Neil play live a year later was life changing for me. Outside of immediate family he became a huge influence on who I became as a person through his words.

2112 is a game changer. You will not look at things the same afterwards. Enjoy... I am.. Also, you mentioned all 3 doing a solo at once. The lead break in Freewill is the best example of that. It's also the greatest 60 seconds of music my ears have ever soaked up!

I was in high school and I had a bunch of acquaintances that had been playing drums for years, and they could play anything heavy metal at insane BPM, but they would struggle for months trying to learn to play this, if they could ever manage it at all. Whenever drummers would converse, the inevitable questions that would always come up is 'Yes, but can you play La Villa Strangiato?'.

This is beyond a doubt Rush's most complex instrumental. Not only is Alex's guitar solos insane but its also one of the hardsst songs ever for drummers to play with many taking it as a badge of honor if they can get through it mistake free, and on top of that Geddies doing his usual thing on the Bass, keyboards and foot peddles and all three are in total sync. If I were to rank their.other four instrumentals id go YYZ, Leave that thing alone, wheres my thing, and The main monkey business in that order. 😊

My first time of hearing that was in 1980. I was already familiar with other great tunes from Rush but just when I thought maybe I’d heard all of their best, there was “ La Villa “. What an incredible roller coaster ride. That song along with Xanadu made me an eternal fan of those guys.

😳 I remember that Tour! 🤔 But can't remember if it was Giant Stadium, Radio City Music Hall or if I saw them in NJ. 🤯 Hard to remember after 40 yrs of Rush Shows. If you want early Prog rock with amazing creativity, might I suggest the group, Yes. Rick Wakeman: master of keys Chris Squire: An inspiration to many on the bass guitar Steve Howe: pick magic guitarist Bill Bruford : Drum kit master and caboodle Jon Anderson: vocals are an instrument too and lyrics give him the notes he wishes to play. There have been others to come in and out but for me, those are the core. IMO: Yes were the master impressionists of the music word.

Well congratulations, Man. You just experienced one of the most important songs in Rock. Born in '68, Big Hit Rock wonders are what I listened to primarily until this girl in high school introduced me to Black Sabbath, Judas Priest and Rush. All 3 made the most changes per song compared to all other Rock I'd listened to up until then, Rush being the most progressive, with more changes per song and the least predictability. After that, I was sold on Progressive Rock since, as my favorite kind of music.

Great reaction!! What you referred to as "alternative rock", was actually "progressive rock". Rush is my all-time favorite band, but they had some inspiration from Yes. Another progressive rock band that is amazing and has a very deep catalog. Tool is a band that got some inspiration from Rush. They too, have a deep catalog. Both are incredible bands, vastly different, but share some similar characteristics. Roundabout, by Yes...and 46 and 2, by Tool are great songs to check out.

Alex Lifeson wrote this song about a series of nightmares he had; the various parts of the song depict different parts or feelings in the dreams. It transitions from peaceful, to energetic, to frightening, to the sudden awakening. It's a tale told with no words. The drumming is incredible. Neil Peart studied under a jazz drummer and he was constantly trying to improve his craft, despite the fact that he earned the nickname of "The Professor" himself for his mastery. I love that you said they're all doing solos at the same time because I've often said that- Rush's songs are like that, where each member gets into "the pocket" and rocks out while managing never to step on each other and remain so TIGHT!

Great reaction, dude! Think about this.. this was 1978, no auto-tune! Antique equipment (lol)! This song nearly killed them! They spent 10 days trying to record this song in 1 take off the floor! They finally had to admit defeat and record it in 3 parts! But soon they mastered it and was a staple at nearly every tour! At least the 3 that I saw! Some with switch ups.. even a circus music intro! Geddy and Alex write the music and Neil writes the lyrics. RUSH were one of the originators of the Prog Rock movement, and I would arguably say the best there was. Imagine listening to this in 1978.....well, I did. I was 24 years old. Mind blown. It is always important to inform that Rush had several eras in its sound style, between the most classic rock, progressive, even going through a very 80's phase with synthesizers. But always creating his sound in a very peculiar, different, but brilliant way. If one era doesn't suit you, look for information about the other eras. If you're curious about the 80's I recommend "Grand Designs" from the Power Windows disc

I have a CD of Carl Stallings cartoon music works, and a long time ago my band and I were listening to it while building out our band studio in my garage and we all heard that bit and said we should write a song around that piece...my Rush Head friend broke the news to us gently that it had already been done...lol. great song.

It took me almost a goddamn week & 4 copies of the LP in 78 to learn the entire album note for note nuance for nuance. The bass solo alone took 2 days. Didn't have KZbin video tutorial nothing but lifting the friggin needle off the record & trying to find the parts ya wanted to learn. Do that today ya young brats that's true learning tunes your ear to listen & hands to play & brains to remember it. 53 years boys & girls is how long big daddy's been playing bass. No break since 1971. Every day it's in my hands at some point thousands of bands, gigs, tv, commercial jingles, the road, studio, sock hops, Sadie Hawkins dances, opening for top acts, you name it I did it. The first 5 years I studied practiced still do in 76 I made my first 50$ at 16. No regrets. I'd do it again if I could redo my life.

If looking for other Rush songs with great synthesizer sounds and parts, I would suggest, Marathon, Territories, and Mystic Rhythms. Another band worth checking out that always have great musicianship, soundscapes, and A high degree of creativity is, Yes; I would recommend their song Awaken as a prime example of the pinnacle of their creativity, if you decide to listen to it use the studio version of the song from the album Going for the One.

I like to call this song "Neil casually destroys a drum set." Seriously he is just going nuts back there on it. LOVE the drop from the initial theme into the really quiet and calm theme... Alex just kills it with the dynamics. You don't hear guitar played like that very often and it is so beautiful. Calling it everyone solo at the same time is exactly what this is. It's like 3 dudes showed up in the studio and just started jamming and this masterpiece of music came out.

Remember there are only 3 people in this band. The lead singer is also playing bass and keyboards. The monsters part (cartoon) was inspired by Raymond Scott's, "Powerhouse" written in 1936. 😁 probably already said below. But seriously there are only 3 people in this band.

your comments are awesome for this! thank you. I actually thought Geddy became over realiant on the keys/synth but you reminded me that it was quite good.... the musicianship of these 3 is off the chart (I think most agree) Alex on guitar, Geddy on bass and keys and Neil (RIP) on drums and lyricism
