There are 2 absolute classic versions of this song., the original Screamin Jay Hawkins version and then there is this Angelina Jordan version which honours the memory and style of the original artist. What you will soon realize is that Angelina today at 16 Angelina is already the best Jazz singer on the Planet! Angelina won Norway's Got Talent when she was 8 yrs old after starting the competition at 7 yrs old. The youngest winner of any Got Talent show on the planet. She had to wait two years because you had to be 7 yrs old to enter. She started with a rendition of Billie Holiday's 'Gloomy Sunday' which she just infused with Billie's soul. She followed this by another Billie classic with a pitch perfect rendition of 'I'm a Fool to Want You' acapella. Her next performance was a beautiful rendition of 'Bang, Bang' by Sony & Cher and performed most famously by Nancy Sinatra. She won the competition with what I consider her first Masterpiece performance of 'Summertime' by George Gershwin. Shortly after winning she was designated a National Treasure by the Norwegian people. ♥👣👸🏻 There is video of Angelina recorded my her mother Sarah Astar singing a couple of lines of "I Will Always Love You' by Whitney Houston when she was 18 months old. She started studying all the greats of Jazz soon after under the guidance of her Iranian Grandmother Mery Zamani a child prodigy in her own right as an artist and poet. English is Angelina's 3rs language behind Norwegian and Farsi along with japanese and some German and perhaps more. She did this from 2 & 3 yrs old by scrolling thru KZbin of all their most Iconic performance. Angelina doesn't just mimic these greats, she reinterprets them and then simply sings them the way they were meant to be sung. She makes them her own. Angelina was begging her mother to go on "that Simon show" when she was 3 yrs old. encouraged to sing children songs, she would have none of that. Angelina chooses her own songs and she is absolutely fearless. No song is too big and no artist is too Iconic. All the most Iconic songs by the most Iconic singers in music history. Angelina has said singing to her is as important to her as breathing. She will sing anything Acapella at any time and often does. Her Tic-Toc is full of these impromptu performances wherever she might be whether in the car, walking around the neighborhood or in a parking Garage. Accompanied by most often a simple guitar or piano her performances are always incredible. Add a band or even a full orchestra as in her performance for Quincy Jones at his request singing his arrangement of 'Fly Me to the Moon'. The same arrangement he did for Frank Sinatra. This opened for his 85th birthday celebration at the 02 Arena in London. Since winning NGT she has sung for celebrities and heads of state and some of the biggest venues all over the world. The industry is well aware of Angelina's immense talent and her family were inundated by offers from the biggest promoters in the world. All turned down by Angelina and her family. They have protected her while she finishes school. She has sung mostly for charities raising millions for children and climate change as well as a few festivals and occasionally some huge venues like opening for Norah Jones in Korea in front of about 40 thousand. Great reaction to a vocal tour-de-force! Angelina Jordan arguably brings the most confident, versatile, seemingly effortless, and fearless vocal artistry found today (whether measured across artists, genres, or decades). You may think this an exaggeration but listen to a few more of her many performances (150+ covers plus original songs - all on YT) and you will see! She has been performing at a high level all over the world since age 8 when she won Norway's Got Talent singing Billie Holiday, Nancy Sinatra, and Gershwin. It is the rare singer that can, as Angelina has done, go from Queen to "Screamin" Jay Hawkins to Adele to Elvis to Whitney Houston to Michael Jackson to Etta James to James Brown to Amy Winehouse to the Beatles (and many others in between) and do them all justice! It seems that Angelina has learned from and absorbed everybody who is anybody that came before her. If you want to hear music, listen to anyone. If you want to feel music, listen to Angelina. She will stagger you with her ability to find and bring forth the 'essence', the emotional message of nearly any song. You have far to go with Angelina. "I Put a Spell On You" has been covered many times and is recognized as a classic, yet almost never is the tone of the original 1956 "Screamin" Jay Hawkins version captured. This is because Hawkins was the original shock-rock guy (think Ozzy Osbourne type craziness) and his style is difficult to emulate and also because his dated delivery is uncomfortable and stereotypical to our modern sensibilities. Yet Angelina respectfully sings his own song in a manner that exceeds his (Hawkin's image is on the candle she holds at the start of her video). You must compare her rendition to that of Hawkins' original (and throw in a couple of "famous" covers as well) to see the true genius in how AJ incorporates many of his vocal elements [usually omitted by most singers]. This shows another aspect of her musical IQ and arranging genius (not to mention her masterful control of her vocal instrument equaled by few others regardless of age). Angelina was 9 years old in this performance - Her nationality is Norwegian but is fluent in English even at this age - This song was not arranged for her - she wrote the arrangement based after listening to the original Screamin' Jay Hawkins version - in fact, at the beginning of the video you see Angelina writing down some last-minute changes and it is read by the bandleader. You also notice that her own handwritten notes are on the music stand in front of her as she sings. Yes, Angelina was 9 years and 2 months old when she performed this song. It is her tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, who wrote and performed the song in 1956. She based her arrangement on his original performance, although she discarded all the theatrics and allowed her voice and body language to tell the story. The song has been covered by many singers over the years, but to my knowledge, Angelina is the only one who has sung in the same style as the original. Things I found particularly worthy of note in this video are (a) Angelina finishing writing last minute changes she wanted and handing them to the Music Director, who smiled. (b) A brief glimpse of Mery Zamani, Angelina's maternal grandmother, a well known and respected Iranian Artist and poet who was also a child prodigy. She was the person who recognised Angelina's talent at an early age and exposed her to all the old time jazz singers. (c) The candle with an image of Screamin' Jay Hawkins on it. (d) The smile on the face of the Bass player. (e) How she rose on to her toes on the last occasion she sang "...because you're mine" (f) The fact she occasionally refers to her written notes on the music stand (g) The instant transformation from "performance" mode to that of a pensive child, possibly wondering whether she could have done better. I comment on the "pensive" child because Angelina has an incredible work ethic and seeks to perform every song in a way she considers will bring out all the emotions within the lyrics and melody. Angelina has been referred to as the "Queen of Jazz", "The Barefoot Princess", "The girl with a thousand voices". All of them are true, but I prefer the nickname I gave her after listening to about six of her performances. For me, she is "The Chameleon of Song", for as a chameleon is able to change its colour to match its surroundings, so Angelina is able to change the "colour" of her voice to accurately match the needs of the song to reveal the emotions within the lyrics and melody. Even more remarkable is her innate ability to communicate those same emotions to her listeners.

I have had to repeatedly stop and restart this song and Bohemian Rhapsody because my ears and eyes couldn't convince my brain that all of the tones,sounds and little nuances were coming out of such a young girl or anyone that age for that matter!!!. Jack, you are so right, she was born with a gift but you were very careful to include the fact that a lot of hard work and practice went into creating this phenomenon. Although you have witnessed many artists who come along who are gifted I believe Angelina is on another level. Her soulfulness compliments her artistry to a degree which makes a listen extraordinary. Although she is a very humble person the poise and confidence she exhibits while she is performing is off the charts. Of course this production is very unique and stands alone but when you listen to more of Angelina you will get the feeling she is singing 'for you' besides to you. She touches people's hearts and although our head doesn't have an explanation for what is going on our hearts figured everything out immediately and opened the door for her to become part of the listener. The barefeet? If you haven't found out why she sings barefoot yet, wait till you find out why! Jack, I have one I'd like you to listen to, Angelina singing 'My Funny Valentine' at 10 years old sitting in a chair at home. What you will see is a sweet little girl transform into an accomplished artist and back again to the beautiful young girl. Btw, she rerecorded a new version of the song at 16 years old and it was wonderful. But, it is a must to see the 10 year old version, as well.

Almost a surreal experience for me - while I've probably seen this video well over a hundred times, 1st time I've seen the reactor in the corner of the screen with an expression of disbelief AND a shirt saying: "The Dreaming". :) And - as young as Angelina is here - in order to get a better sense of her musical influencers, I highly recommend going back to all 4 of her Norway Got Talent performances (Gloomy Sunday, I'm A Fool To Want You, Bang Bang & Summertime) - - at ages 7-8. Hello my friend. I suggested Angelina WAAAAY back when, and was wondering if you'd eventually go there. Now that you did, I'm fairly sure you're going to love it. Angelina is a VERY special singer, artist and human being. I know that you recently discovered DImash, too, but you will very clearly see a lot of differences as to what kind of artists they are. Totally stellar, both of them, but completely uncomparable. So there shuld be room for her on your channel 🙂 I am Norwegian, like her, and have been following her since she won Norway's Got Talent in 2014, when she was 7 to 8. She had turned 8 by the time of the final. Angelina turned 16 on January 10th and currently stands 6' 1 tall (1m 85 cm). She's still young, but no small girl anymore...LOL If you would like to hear what she sounds like as of right now, (and see what she looks like as well), I suggest you react to her rendition of the 1937 jazz standard "My Funny Valentine", which she dropped on Valentine's Day in February this year. I love this performance so much. As they say AJ don't play. Well perhaps this is what she does when she does play and we get the most stunning, amazing performance of a 9 yr old of this Jazz standard ever created. I believe it is going to go down in Jazz & Music history as the best ever for this age and in my opinion the best rendition of this song ever created Screamin Jay included. It will be revisited for Decades and will remain relevant for Generations to come. Any one who discovers this performance for the first time today or a 100 years from today are going to be as amazed and astounded as everybody has been to this point. Think of the children who will be inspired by this one performance in the decades to come. This is an Iconic performance and will alway be Iconic. Angelina has on her own from early on at 6 or 7 yrs old reintroduced what I believe will be a whole new Jazz Era and redefined by this young phenom and prodigy. That is astounding! And she is just 16 years old... That is unfathomable!... Oh Lord... what is coming the world is not prepared for but we as fans have been on the edge of our seats and will remain there as we wait. No hurry. We want Angelina to do it her way when she is ready. She has already established her proficiency and incredible work ethic in this endeavor guided by an incredible family and professional support now surrounding her. We know Angelina will continue to amaze! We will be here to experience and cherish it for as long as we live.... and I am praying for many more years for myself to enjoy it till the end of my days... Not to be morbid but when I'm lying in my deathbed I hope to go out of this world listening to the most beautiful voice ever created for man just as Angelina came into it to fulfill her purpose, what she was put on earth to do, sing for the whole World... and Me! i have said this before, and I will say it again.. this is the most amazing thing I have ever heard come out of an 9 year old's mouth. Her musicianship at that age was through the roof.. if you noticed in the beginning a gentleman was looking at a piece of paper and smiling. He was smiling because Angelina made changes to the song's arrangement. She has clearly got a gift. To be arranging songs at 9, as a singer, shows that she is already a seasoned musician, not just a singer. I have been listening to Angelina for about a year now, and everything she does, she makes her own. Her arrangement are stunning. I know you normally react to instrumentalists but if you want to react to some more of her content, there are only about 130 some odd more videos to choose from, lol. One of my favorites (jazz standard) songs is the studio version of Billy Holidays " I'm a fool to want you" , which she also sang a Capella at the age of 7 on Norway's got talent. She not only "does it" .. She also arranged it from Screaming Jay Hawkins original, which she felll in love with. That was him on the candle at the very start of the video .. Even this young she always wanted to acknowledge and honor the original .. and in this case that was also the composer/ writer. IT is amazing to go back in time and watch Screaming Jay Hawkins do this. it's amazing what she did with this .. her arrangements are always a total marvel .. and this one particularly. I really recommend it! If only to see what she fell in love with and then how she translated it into her own masterpiece. I enjoyed your reaction. It’s very nice to see you so excited and happy right off the bat and then see your face change as soon as she starts she singing to pure unbelief and incomprehension :-) It took you a little while to get back to enjoying it, but I think that happened somewhere during the sax solo. Though at the end you were still very overwhelmed at the end. As you can imagine that happens quite a lot with this specific performance. She chooses all her own songs & does all her own arrangements ever since she was very young, even when she did Screaming Jay Hawkins “I put a spell on you” at barely 9, even at 7 & 8 on NGT (Norway’s Got Talent). On AGT-C season 2 Angie & her grandma Mery made her outfit from silkscreen patterns of her grandma's art work when she was 13 back in Norway. They makes several of her other outfits for shows & concerts too. She also paints great, plays 5 instruments & speaks & sings 4+ languages, English being her 3rd. Angie turned 16 on 1-10-22. Angie is a very kind, giving, loving, respectful, humble & a big hearted Christian girl. She always sings barefoot when performing & she wrote a book about it at 9 called “Between Two Hearts” & she was/is the youngest to be published in Norway. (What Angie said it in an interview a year later (when she was around 10 at interview) about this song: “It means love Desperate love. It's very special, it's almost voodoo The original is very nice, and when I scream it is a desperate cry that everyone should love each other.”- AJ.) Angie has arranged over 160 covers & written 5 songs & has had 2 written for her also so far, & she’s mastered over 10 genre’s by age 13. Angelina is seen writing her 'wishes' at the start of the video. She has always created her own arrangements and she makes sure the band knows how she wants to perform the song. Please take the time to read the biography I compiled for my all time favorite musical artist over my 63 years. Born Angelina Jordan Astar on January 10, 2006 in Oslo, Norway to her Norwegian mother, Sara Astar and her Swedish father, Gerry Christian Slattman. Angelina started singing around 18 months of age, after listening to Whitney Houston on KZbin. She quickly became obsessed with listening to music videos and her maternal grandmother, Mery Zamani got Angelina interested in classic jazz. Mery Zamani is Iranian and was considered a prodigy as an artist and poet while growing up in Iran. Angelina speaks Norwegian, Farsi, English and has sung a song in Japanese. Angelina attended the Oslo Waldorf School and participated in the Oslo School of Music and Performing Arts after-school program, where starting around age 4, she had training in music but no vocal training. Her teachers were smart enough to not attempt to change what she was doing vocally. Angelina plays the piano and guitar and also paints. More recently she along with her grandmother have designed and made the clothing she wears on stage. *Why Angelina always performs barefoot* At age 6, while traveling in the Middle East with her mother and grandmother, Angelina noticed a girl around her age standing on the side of the road, asking people to step on her bathroom scale to be weighed in hopes of getting some money. Angelina took off her shoes so as to not get the scale dirty and stepped on the scale many times to make the girl feel better. Angelina befriends the girl who was not wearing shoes and has scars on her feet, and learns she is an orphan. The orphan girl tells Angelina how beautiful she thinks her shoes are. Angelina says her shoes don’t fit her well and she wants to give her shoes to the orphan girl who thanks Angelina for giving her the shoes. Angelina asked the girl what she wanted to be when she grew up and the girl replied, “I want to become a doctor, but that will never happen since I have no parents and I have siblings so I have to do whatever is necessary for us to survive.” Angelina told the girl to never give up on her dreams. The poor girl asked Angelina what she wanted to be when she grew up and Angelina replied that she wanted to sing for the whole world. The poor girl said she would pray every day so Angelina’s dream would come true. Angelina still says she thinks of that homeless girl every day and has always performed barefoot to remind her of all the children who are less fortunate. At age 9, she became the youngest published author in Norway’s history by writing a book about this encounter in the Middle East. Angelina, at age 6 and 7, did record a few songs in a recording studio at her school, most notably “I Who Have Nothing”, a truly remarkable performance for a 7 year old. At age 7, Angelina’s audition on Norway’s Got Talent, was a cover of Billie Holiday’s “Gloomy Sunday”, a song which was banned by a number of European countries during World War II because authorities worried the song would increase the suicide rate. Truly bizarre that this is the song to launch the career of a child musical prodigy. One of the judges on NGT cried. Angelina had turned 8 years old for her next performance on NGT, covering Billie Holiday’s “I’m a Fool to Want You” singing acapella which was required by NGT unless the singer also played an instrument while singing. This was the Judge’s cut round of the competition and was not performed in front of an audience. In the Semi Final round of NGT, Angelina sang “Bang Bang” which was written by Sonny Bono and was first performed by his wife Cher but is best known sung by Nancy Sinatra. The improvement in each performance is incredible even though there were only a couple months between them. In the Finals, Angelina did a cover of George Gershwin’s, “Summertime” and won the contest, capturing 46% of the votes from the ten finalists. Angelina had become a star in her native Norway and her videos on KZbin went viral. She gave a few concerts during the summer of 2014 while 8 years old. In December 2014, Angelina realized a life-long desire to sing at the Save the Children's Peace Prize Celebration which is part of the Noble Peace Prize celebration. Angelina’s family took her to United States, Brazil, Germany, France, United Kingdom, Russia, South Korea, Singapore among other corners of Earth, to perform for heads of state and to help raise money for charity. All before Angelina turned 14. A 9 years old, Angelina recorded a music video covering the 1956 Jay Hawkin’s classic, “I Put a Spell On You”. The video begins by showing Angelina writing her “wishes” for how she wants to perform the song. Angelina has always created her own arrangements for her cover songs. At age 10 and just a week before her 11th birthday, Angelina recorded a demo of “I’m Still Holding Out for You”. Her family never pursued having that recording officially released but someone leaked it on a KZbin video. Thankfully, everyone involved with that song is now ok with the leaked version. Many angels (fans) believe this is one of Angelina’s best performances. When Angelina was 11, she performed a number of concerts in Norway with a jazz/rock band. Those concerts included up to 14 songs, each remarkably performed. Angelina seems to be at her best when on stage, never nervous, only 100% confident. On June 27, 2018, at age 12, Jordan performed “Fly Me to the Moon” for Quincy Jones in The O2 Arena in London. She has said that was the high point of her young career which was already in it’s 6th year. During 2018, Angelina lost her paternal grandfather, her friend Avicii and one of her idols, Aretha Franklin. She did a moving tribute for each. In 2019, Angelina accepted an invitation to compete in the 2nd season of America’s Got Talent (AGT), The Champions. She had, since age 3, wanted to perform for Simon Cowell and she earned his praise with her genius arrangement of “Bohemian Rhapsody”. The surviving members of Queen loved it so much they put a link to it on their Twitter. Angelina was eliminated after covering Elton John’s “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road”. Angelina’s family refused to sign any agreement with AGT which would give Simon control over her career. Angelina, before age 14, had covered more than 130 songs from 80 different artists, spanning at least 8 genres, all of which are available on KZbin. Angelina has always made changes to each song she covers and often her version is preferred over the original. On KZbin, search on The Complete Works of Angelina Jordan as Rusty Shackleford has put all songs in one file and has a complete playlist in the description of that video. The pandemic hit shortly after her performances on AGT and likely caused a change of plans by her family, most notably her Uncle Michael who is her manager. Her family agreed to a contract with Republic Records in August 2020. Republic Records declared Angelina Jordan their highest priority new artist. Reportedly her family requested Republic to allow her as normal a childhood as possible and therefore have yet to fully promote her. In November 2020, Angelina released “Million Miles” which she wrote after the passing of her beloved maternal grandfather. She dedicated the song to anyone who has ever lost a loved one. I came across Angelina on KZbin when she did the AGT Champions songs and have been hooked every since. Like what she has done for you, Angelina has had an incredible impact on my life and the way I process emotions. Over the last few years I have lost two brothers, two nieces, a nephew and my son. Angelina’s music has been instrumental in helping me cope with these losses. I listen to her every day (several hours every day) and on the top of my play list is always, her original, Million Miles. This song is a masterpiece and makes me feel better each time I listen to it. I so wish that I could have traveled to Norway to see her recent concerts. Insisted and started, when age 4 studying music at the academies of Oslo and later on LA, winning Norway gots Talent at age around 8. Later that year after singing on a festival, she was declared NATIONAL TREASURE OF NORWAY by the people of Norway and the Royal Family. Practicing 6 days a week for 6 hours daily, trained her voice. Her god given gift is a slightly bigger larynx (deeper voice) and a stupendous amount of IQ, including Empathy. Her family protected her wherever they could. Now in 2022 she is 16 years old and finishes Highschool, to start her profession seriously. She already is highly respected in musicians circles, for her uncanny feeling for music. This is going to be epic. Edit. Yes, it was. Thank you for this lovely reaction (again). It would have been my mother's 71st birthday today, but she sadly passed away less than a month ago. This was a great way to celebrate a life that passed too early with some youthful excess of talent and life in front of her. I am not kidding you - this young lady is not a "child talent". I am not claiming this. Quincy Jones said this: "The greatest talent since Micheal Jackson". He should know. As someone who has never been interested in child prodigies (their sagas are usually sad, ask Mozart) - this young lady interests me quite a bit - and is a big reason why I plan to live for at least 20 more years. I want to hear her voice peak in her 30s. I am saying this as a fan of her fellow Norwegian musical "poet with words and harmonies", Aurora. Aurora also has a great voice for the music she composes. But as a pure vocal talent, AJ may be one-in-a- century kind of vocal performer instinct. She may turn out to be the most talented that ever got recorded. She is simply not making sense - since one instantly notices that she is not "coached" to sound like she does. She knew how she wanted to sound for a song she wanted to cover - totally organic. She still does. Her recent cover of "My funny valentine" is sublime. It is paying all the homage, but it also sounds fresh and new in a very weird way. The girl is 16 these days. Teens should not be able to do such things.

I've heard this nearly every night for three years, watching people lose it. But what I see is a gifted prodigy take one of the most over the top jazz standards ever made and meet it's fire and take this Enormous song to new and even more exciting places. Hi, I love your analyzes and good reviews. As a Norwegian, I'm glad you've discovered both Aurora and Angelina's great talents. In Scandinavia and Norway in particular, there is a forest of talented young people in music. The reason for this is that all inhabitants of the country are offered weekly hours with highly educated music educators. Preferably teachers who are musicians themselves and see the value in a range of different genres, and the students' opportunities through a mixture of play and seriousness get to develop their voices and music to a very good level. A basic platform that is important no matter what you want to do with your life.

Angelina has many cover version videos out there. Most are better than original. She is an incredible talent.
