I was a 12 year old girl in Virginia that flipped out when I heard him and then saw him. It has been an obsession all my life. I am now 80 and still love him. He just touches your life. Many don't know what a kind and generous man he was. He loved all people, and he loved God. Thanks for this great review.

We often forget Elvis was only 21yo when he recorded this song and yet he sounds like such a mature singer, his phrasing and play on notes is amazing. We also forget he was really all alone at the time as he forged a very different style on the stages across the USA. Great song and lovely reaction John, thanks

My gosh this takes me back before I was even a teenager or just turned! I've been a fan since 8 or 9 years old. Right from the beginning! I'm almost 76 and his music is even better to listen to! I listen all the time and will until my time comes! I love him even more now than I did then! Because we've learned what a kind and generous man he was to his fans and strangers. He gave away most of his money to people that he learned was having hard times gave to over 50 charities in Memphis alone Every year! Not counting all the others he gave concerts to raise money and donated the proceeds to. Even if he read about someone in the paper! He even paid hospital bills for entertainers down on their luck! Gave away 200 cadillacs and numerous other cars!

Somebody said this was the flip side of Heartbreak Hotel, but I love this song best. My favorites during this time are " I Was The One", "All Shook Up" , and "The Girl Of My Best Friend" because of his high voice in each one". I was a 60"s teenager, but it still reminds me of driving around with a boyfriend and songs like this on the radio. I could listen to these all day just because of his voice at that time. That doesn't mean I didn't love his older voice just as good because he was the best in whatever he sang. He put his charm on any song he sang. Thank you John. I love his older voice and the live audience videos. Fantastic!

My memory can be unreliable but I'm sure "I Was the One" was the flip side of "Heartbreak Hotel." And the world changed in 1956. All these years later, it still sounds wonderful. A young man who did his thing, stood his ground, and shared his talent with others.

It is a song of 1956 to be exact January 11 1956; it was the flip side of Heartbreak Hotel and the first song done with the Jordanaires as back vocals. Elvis insisted very much to have the Jordanaires, the Jords he called them, as backvocals and it was also his condition to record it, without the Jords he would not have done it. With the song he proofs that he also could sing ballads and what a versatile singer he was, the most versatile singer ever. Finally ELVIS = THE GOAT period!!!
