You haven’t heard anything yet. Watch Aric Improta “Blur-lights……” and you’ll literally see 20 things a drummer has never done before. It’s a composed piece on the level of Beethoven and Mozart for a drummer.

Interestingly, this band had a vocalist at one time. They recorded two LP's and an EP with their singer, Doug. He left in 2017 (amicably, as far as I know) and the band decided to continue on as an instrumental trio. And all respect to Doug, but their instrumental work is by far the best music they've produced. By leaps and bounds. Somehow, as a trio, the sound is fuller and more evocative and interesting than when there were vocals in the mix. A lot of that, I think, comes from the freedom they've found in exploring soundscapes that don't necessarily lend themselves to vocals. And Aric especially is pulling the weight of multiple musicians already. His use of samples and vocal clips throughout this entire record give it that complexity and texture that having a fourth member would ordinarily bring. Nick's guitar work is fantastically dynamic as well and, like Aric, he almost seems to be doing the work of a lead and rhythm guitarist at the same time. And Reilly has so much emotion and feel to his work on the bass. The way he just flows over top of the melodies is superb. These guys are on some next-level shit. This album, From the Gallery of Sleep, is in my top ten albums of the past decade for sure. It's endlessly fascinating and each time I listen to it I find something new. The thing that makes this group so special to me is that aside from their obvious masterclass-level playing and composition, they have this certain chemistry that shines through. They are all so in tune with what the others are playing. And despite how crazy the songs get, each member is playing to complement the other two. I would implore you to listen to the whole record because it's a triumph. But if you're looking for another track to check out, the video for Vice Wave is sick and the band does some really clever stuff that you'd undoubtedly get super excited for: m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/aYKtnYSrgtiGqKc

I was half-way through adding a comment about it needing a (vocal) melodic line to tie everything together, when you said exactly that! That being said, it stands alone as it is through brilliant musicianship and the choices (your term) that they made. Would happily listen to that again - and probably will. Nice choice Craig, nice job Steve!

So weird hearing tool referened while hearing Night Verses, I get zero vibes of tool and am so glad there is no vocals lol I admit I got some tool vibes when listening to some of ISIS' old albums but they surpassed the sound quickly

Can you check out Liliac- Mars (Live in Cumming GA)? Very good vocalist, guitarist, and drummer to me. Would like to get your thoughts on them. They have only gotten better since that was 3-4 years ago.

Their first 2 albums had vocals and doesnt hold a candle to this album which has no lyrics. Focus on the talented musicianship. Vocals would ruin this gorgeous sound in my opinion.
