John, Freddie wrote this as a tribute to Aretha Franklin...he had hope she would sing it..it has a real gospel, attending church feel to it...note the hand clapping.

I didn't know that! Thanks so much 🙏

The "Queen choir" - you're right, it's signature! I really enjoy Freddie's gospel music side.

This is such a great song. The "Queen choir" consisted of Roger Taylor, Brian May and Freddie Mercury overdubbing a few hundred times. When you hear the recording you think that they could never reproduce it on stage. Well, it turned out they just did it differently but even better. Watch Somebody to Love live in Montreal 1981. I think it's the best version because Roger Taylor's backing vocals are the best. He and Freddie's voices blended together beautifully. Queen always gave 110% on stage and it showed.

yvr kid - BTW, John also sang at the end and sang the chorus in concert. I know because I saw them do this song and others live and John often sang backup, just never lead as he was insecure about his voice (which I thought was just fine). Often in videos, you can see John head to the mic and they switch to somebody else. That always bugged me! :(

Cool reaction but man you should have done the live performance from Montreal 1981. It’s the one that guarantees lots of views, but more importantly for you Freddie’s live vocals and performance skills would have been inspirational for you. Please do it my man. Want to see your jaw drop.

Better to do the studio first then the live

Their performance @ Milton Keynes was also amazing. I agree that the Montreal performance was the best but the audience was lame. 🙄

One of my favourite - if not my favourite - Queen songs. I never get sick of hearing it and to think it came out in 1976. Amazing. I do love the Montreal live performance too as Rogers backing vocals are fantastic but I also love this version. The Queen choir do make it sound so very special. Thank you for a great reaction. Would love to see you do Montreal too soon. All the best from 🇦🇺

I'd like to add my voice to the others on here. Now you've heard the studio version you need to checkout Montreal '81 and/or Milton Keynes '82, what you'll get is one song but three distinctly different interpretations, each one faultless.

I'll check them out. Looking forward 😊

I second the recommendations to react to Queen doing this song live in Montreal 1981. I adore the studio version but am mesmerized by the live version. Queen, with Freddie and John, were an innovative band who pushed the musical envelope. They would not allow themselves to be constrained by the “rules of the day” and instead blazed their own trail. Their studio work is impeccable but their live shows demonstrated why they were the best live band ever.

I have always love QUEENS music. I am 62 and i never thought the younger people of today would enjoy the music from 30 and 40 years ago. Its good to hear. I love alot of the younger groups. White Buffalo,BAD WOLF'S,DISTURBED. I would like to see how you feel about FRANK ZAPPA or SAVORY BROWN,TEN YEARS AFTER,SANTANA

If you don't listen to the live version from Montreal in 1981, you should listen to the Milton Keynes live concert in 1982. I think they are both amazing but different from each other. Queen always kept their performances fresh.

I always recommend their live performances, but this studio version is a must-see because of all the great harmony parts. This song is in my top 10, but that list varies depending on the day. There's just so much great stuff!

I will tell you something else - Have you heard of Nandi Bushell? She is an 11 year old - maybe 12 by now - drummer who has drum battled with Roger Taylor and Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters - and both of them was defeated. She has been on stage with FF and played Everlong - as the only drummer - Taylor Hawkins was watching from backstage with his son - and she killed it. Now she is joining them again at the tribute concert for Taylor Hawkins (who died in the spring this year) among others with Brian and Roger and the FF - and a lot of other prominent musicians. It is on September 3rd - 2022. Just the day after tomorrow. It will be streamed/broadcast - I don't know where - I am from Denmark.
