@@velocityofcl Sounds like a good idea, the animations have story but no dialogue and are around 5 to 15 minutes long each so it's good for watchalongs since you can comment over them

Glad to see more Touhou contents from you! I always enjoy seeing more people discover Touhou, be it through the games, the music, the fan art, animation, etc. There are so many entries to this rabbit hole. LOL (I fell in through fan art myself). Regards the Memories of Phatasm project, I heard that the maker, Manpuku Jinja, pooled their fund together to learn how to make animation just for this project and the episodes started out with just subtitles. Later, fans pitched in to provide fandub, in which the first 3 episodes had only 1 VA who voiced every characters! The series also received French fandub later. The characters are largely the same as how they are in the original game like Reimu, the main protagonist, a laid back (or downright lazy) Japanese shrine maiden, tasked with keeping the peace between the humans and Yokai, mainly by beating up any Yokai that would cause some kind of incident (like stealing the Spring essence to restore a dead cherry blossom tree) or Marisa, the other half of the main protagonists, an ordinary human who self-taught herself to become a witch that mastered destructive magic through magic devices and brews. However, just like any other fan-made work, there are some minor differences here and there as fans often fill in unseen aspects with their own bias and ideas, but it's not completely out of characters or anything. Also, about the place these characters are living in is called "Gensokyo" (Land of Fantasy). It used to be part of Japan in the past inhabited by humans and Yokai alike. As times passed and human technology flourished, Yokai started to lose influence and power due to disappearing beliefs in them, isolated the entire piece of land from the modern world with a barrier erected by Reimu's ancestor, in order to preserve the old ways to keep the Yokai, Gods, deities and all sorts of creatures that have lost their place in the outside world. In fact, anything that has become 'forgotten' will often slip into Gensokyo, including many antiques and even old video games. XD The music used throughout the series are all fan-arranged version of the games' original soundtracks, where the main openings and endings are made by music circle called "Yuuhei Satellite". You can check out their Memories of Phantasm MVs along with their other Touhou arranged tracks on their KZbin channel. Speaking of the fan-arranged songs, though, that's an entirely another rabbit hole of its own which I highly recommend for you to explore. Lots of people react and analyse the games' original scores but rarely do they react to the fan-arranged tracks which also deserve just as much attention for how beautiful and creative they are, music wise as well as MV wise. From just one track, fans could arrange them into so many different forms, from an adrenaline-pumping heavy metal version to an emotion, to Eurobeat that just makes you want to dance non-stop and even tear-jerker instrumental piece. It would be really interesting for you to look at some of the original music and then look at the fan-arranged versions for comparison. In fact, let me leave a few tracks that were used in this episode for you to start with: Opening song: "Though the Scent Lingers, the Flower Scattered" is a fan-arranged version of the song from 10th Touhou game called "The Gensokyo the Gods Loved". The thing about Memories of Phantasm is that it isnt the most reliable source for canon information (or information in general since episodes are short and skip some things) since the producers and writers put so many of their headcanons into characters (the show was meant to be a little thing for other fans that already know the story, so it isnt really begginer friendly), i would really recomend playing one of the games or as painful as it is read the wiki...for canon information and material

Its actually been in Interviews, but Manpukujinja has made it clear that It was never intended to be a "canon" interpretation of the material, the director and writers intended it to be an interpretation of "fanon" animated for the fans' enjoyment. Hate to be the "um actually" guy but felt like this correction was necessary. But yeah I can see how the misunderstanding forms. I don't think that a reaction video of a wiki page would get all that much watch time though...

@@niaula5557 well yeah, im just saying that if he actually wants to learn something canon about characters and not just a bunch of "fans to fans" stuff, he should consume some official material...like playing one of the games or reading some manga (for canon information and material💀) since Phantasm isnt really begginer friendly, sure it's pretty but it leaves too much out for beginners like this guy

This is what I've been waiting for. I can't wait. A small FYI, Reimu is EXTREMELY OP in this world. Her main ability other than shrine maiden duties is ability of flight or float. Not in a way like everyone else in the world can do it. It is very hard to explain how it works but its like she can fly in-between realities but still be in the same reality. It can basically make it so opponents attack just miss her without any real reason. Stack that with her Shrine Maiden abilities with powerful barrier and sealing techniques, no-one can really ever stand up to her. Some extra lore beyond this. After the first 5 games there was a law introduced (I can't exactly remember the name off the top of my head) that made it so their battles were more game-like than life threatening. So the first 5 games characters could easily die from these battles because they were true battles. This is also were Reimu fought some of her most powerful opponents in the series. (not there are definitely more powerful beings in some of the later games as well.) Of course they could of just felt more powerful because the law wasn't enforced for these battles. She also didn't even have the ability to fly yet either in these games, as the first game all took place with Reimu running on the ground. While later she used a turtle friend, Genji, that could fly her where she needed to be. As Reimu and Marissa are pretty much in every game now. They have lore that keeps expanded and they keep getting more powerful with more abilities.

4:08 Something to note about Memories of Phantasm is that it's actually released with no dub, only music and sound effects. All dubs of it are fan-made (yes, fans of the fan-work). The voice actress for this particular episode (yes, it's just one woman doing all the voices) is Pika Aizawa, and while she sadly hasn't done every episode, her fandubs seem to be the most popular online. 5:57 You don't know the half of it. Every new Touhou game introduces several new characters. Usually about half a dozen in each mainline game, plus one or two in each side game. There's well over a hundred of them, though as you might expect fans generally tend to focus on the ones that have been around the longest. 9:58 Canonically, Reimu is kind of a lazy bum when it comes to most of her shrine maiden duties. The sole exception is whenever it comes to dealing with something that's threatening Gensokyo, which she takes _very_ seriously. Unfortunately, that's one of the many liberties this anime has taken to try to reconcile the split narrative of the games (where each playable character (in this case, Reimu, Marisa, and Sakuya) are each able to solve the incident on their own) with the singular narrative of an anime. 10:33 Short answer is that any music you hear in a Touhou fanwork is a remix/cover of a track from one of the games. Supposedly one of the reasons ZUN created the Touhou series was as a platform for his music. The original track for the one playing in this scene is "幽雅に咲かせ、墨染の桜　～ Border of Life", which is Yuyuko's boss theme. 17:35 Sort of. The circle behind this fanime seem to be fanboys of that character, as she shows up a bunch of times before she's canonically supposed to. Also, Memories of Phantasm covers the events of the games completely out of order. This episode covers Touhou 7: Perfect Cherry Blossom, while the next few episodes cover Touhou 6: Embodiment of Scarlet Devil (yet take place after Touhou 11: Subterranean Animism). For context, Green Reimu isn't supposed to show up until Touhou 10: Mountain of Faith.

The japanese title of “The Memories of phantasm” is 「幻想万華鏡」. 幻想 is phantasm. 万華鏡 is kaleidoscope.

Some info on the VAs, For MoP the original episodes had no Va work attached to them when the episodes were distributed but instead came with a subtitles in Japanese. So everything when it come down to voice work is fandubbing basically. Interestingly enough this is the only touhou fanime (fan made anime) to not have voice work.(yes there are several however I don't really recommend them since the require some knowledge of touhou)

@@velocityofcl There's 9, I'd start with his oldest work and go forwards, one because they cover some of the older games, and two watching his animation progress is a real treat. So yeah, I'd say stream it, that way you can ask people about the characters and stuff. His oldest is Remilia vs Reimu, then Marisa vs Flandere, and so on. You'll see that fight also take place in the anime soon too if you want actual context
