It's for that reason that you should AVOID CD baby at ALL COSTS. Glenn from Spectre Sound does mix reviews live on his channel where viewers send in songs they mixed for him to review. One of these viewer's used CD baby to put out the song and they took down the stream WHILE HE WAS LIVE because of that song, even though the copyright owner literally sent the song to him, asking for him to review the mix. They are also a pain in the ass if you later post a music video of the song. You read that right, if you put out a music video OF YOUR OWN SONG, you need to get their permission.

More people know about King Crimson because of their blocking than probably have ever heard any of their music. Sounds like a good marketing scheme to me. I saw a video that said, among others, the Jimmi Hendrix is becoming less and less popular and known because his music gets blocked. Yeah, block uploads of somebody who has been dead for over half a century. That’ll keep him in the limelight.

There’s a difference between “promoting” something and “profiting” from something. Many think pop culture is their’s for the taking because it’s intangible and widespread in the media. Many don’t understand the concept of intellectual property, copywriting, and publishing. To be fair, they can be convoluted issues. But if you create media for profit it’s your legal duty to understand these things. Blaming intellectual property owners as being stingy is ridiculous. Everyone deserves to protect their business, their products, the way they want to.

Some of those Rick Beato blocks were absurd. Beato was introducing many artists and albums form eons ago to whole new audiences and they block him. His "What makes this song famous" series was some of the best promotion some of those artists and albums ever had. To me, his channel is like a marketer's dream. Your product was directly pitched to a couple hundred thousand viewers who clearly all have potential interest in your product and you block him? I know it's legally correct to block but it just seems dumb AF.

It was surprising for me too, but I'm wondering if it might be because of his own record label Digital Global Mobile: this is one of the very few that don't actually own the rights on the songs, but only manages the copyright on behalf of the artists. The problem is, when someone posts a cover of one of these artists, they can't decide by themselves if they allow it or not, since... well, they don't own the rights. And the artists themselves probably have other things to do than review covers on YT to decide if they allow them or not. So the label blocks everything just to be safe... Just a hypothesis, but it sounds plausible.

This won't make a difference. UMG are currently issuing copyright strikes on the basis that "online publishing" is somehow different. People think their music is going to live forever and stay relevant. The fact is covers and tutorials turn more people on to older artists than anything else. They go and check out the original artist's catalog become fans. Lots of young fans actually believed that Sting/Dominic Miller ripped off JuiceWRLD with "Shape Of My Heart". They only knew the Juice WRLD riff, but that led them to discover the original. Ultimately these chronic blockers/strikers are arrogant and short-sighted. You've provided a great service by giving names.

I’ve tried to look at this from both sides. But at the end of the day, I think these artists, e.g. Don Henley, are being very short sighted. People in their 20’s and 30’s are much more likely to get their information from KZbin, Instagram, Tik Tok, etc., than from other, more traditional mediums. So, if you’re someone who’s not familiar with the Eagles, are you going to stumble upon their music on Apple Music or Spotify, not knowing anything about them? As time goes by that’s less and less likely. But, maybe if you see someone like Kelly Dean showing you how to play one of their great songs it might motivate you to learn more about them. I’m afraid that a lot of these incredible bands from the 70’s and 80’s are going to slowly fade away b/c younger generations just won’t hear their music. It’s not like Rick Beato, Marty, Justin, or Kelly Dean are claiming that they wrote these songs. They are honoring them by showing you how great they are and how you can play them yourself. Again, just sort sighted.

Time to start avoiding their music completely, playing watching, buying or attending concerts. So many of these "artists" who claimed they were in it for the music become successful and show they are only in it for the money. Don Henley has a net worth of 200 million. A youtube cover is not going to hurt him financially.
@onusgumboot5565

The reason I object to the way the law is set up in music, is that someone doing a cover never hurts the artist. The Publishing companies pretty much killed live music in the small towns on the west coast. They sent people in to any bar that had live music and demanded money for royalties. It wasn't worth it to bar owners. They just stopped doing live music. If someone stole my guitar, I wouldn't be able to play. If I play someone elses song, they can still play it too. And they get paid a lot more than I ever will. It's just greed. And maybe ego.

@@BackwoodsFilms There are many things in the world that endure, but only a few become memorable and even fewer become cherished. You can't cherish or remember what you don't know. As it is today, some may recognize the Hotel but not everyone will know or care about the band, and this can only erode further if it's not advertised and promoted. Can the world remember or care about the author of "Happy Birthday"? As for me, the band was never one if my references. The emotions I may have had with them are now being overrun by a feeling of disgust, as it is an ignorant, arrogant attitude. And, although the scale of consequences is completely different, we're seeing in the world what that blind attitude may do to people. In my book, it's never acceptable, even if it is just about some songs or about a single guy ruining it for everybody. I absolutely loathe intentional stupidity.

A warning to anyone who livestreams anywhere music could potentially be heard in the background. For example, you are in a store or restaurant and there are speakers in the ceiling playing music just loud enough to be picked up by your microphone. They treat barely audible background music the same as if you were playing a stolen studio master recording on your stream. Car stereos are also a problem. If a car with a loud stereo drives past you playing a song on the radio, you’ll get a copyright claim or strike against you. You could be near someone who has custom ringtone that plays a copyrighted song. Anything that causes copyrighted audio to appear on your video can be trouble. Something I found out the hard way is if you record yourself playing a video game and the soundtrack is copyrighted, you can get in trouble. This even goes for “freeware” games. I have claims against several “free” games I made walkthroughs on that turned out to have copyrighted music for their soundtrack.

This copyright malarky goes beyond just current material. I had a copyright claim on "When You and I Were Young Maggie", an 1865 composition, on my trivial, low-viewer channel. I think it was because some slack jaw country band did a slack jaw version of it on the B side of one of heir slack jaw albums 30 years ago. I stood my ground and won that one. Then there was the demo of the chord progression for "House of the Rising Sun". They claim to own the chord progression.

Yep, I got my first copyright strike the other day for a piano/vocal cover of Summer of '69. The system though is totally broken, as there are tons of covers of this song on KZbin with thousands of views, but me with my 1k subscribers and about a few hundred views on the video - got taken down !. The whole copyright claim system is screwed up and it's just pot luck if you get screwed or not. As you say I have no problem (and agree) that if I do a cover, any 'money' generated from that should go to the copyright owner, but issuing strikes and taking people's channels down is unnecessary.

I have done some covers of songs that inspired me to pick up and learn an instrument and have used the songs as something to learn by. I fully agree that any ad revenue should be directed to the IP owners. I play the bass and was inspired to pick it up by Billy Sheehan. Different artists..... I did a reaction on MY OWN SONG as a way to introduce my channel. It was the first time the song was ever played in public and it was played by my co-writer. The song had been written a couple of weeks earlier and was NOT available for purchase. No one outside of the singer and I (and our wives) knew the song existed... And I got a copywrite strike from CS Baby, who NEVER had it. I had the temerity of challenging it and lost my channel. It matters not what song or artist you do, you have a chance of a strike from people who don't have the right.

same applies to KZbin comments. if you flag someone's comment as offensive they get a strike with no avenue to defend themselves or reverse the ruling... KZbin doesn't even tell you what comment you made was flagged. I have a strong suspicion that it's social engineering in the same way that the news broadcasts only fear and outrage - driving home the message that you don't have power and those who do will use it to mess with you as they like... nurturing frustration & learned hope/helplessness in us peons.

I license a lot of music. Last time I got a copyright claim on a video on my videography channel that was from a company that wasn’t the artist I tracked them down on google and sent their email a cease and desist, my license, and a link to where the song was downloaded from with a polite but firm email saying I’d report their illegal claim to the actual artist if they didn’t drop it. Turns out an artist had downloaded and licensed it from the same place, recorded vocals on it, then had it distributed through the company without telling them he didn’t own the music. They manually dropped it. Many of these companies have a partially automated system and just blanket ban, if you challenge in a place off KZbin then they can’t throw a strike at you because you didn’t challenge through KZbin. They also generally realize you were passed enough to track them down and you might actually call a lawyer.

For anyone who does covers or reactions to heavier music, the two labels I've had the most issues with are century media and equal vision. No other labels have blocked anything I've done but I'll never cover anything by those labels again. I always assumed it was the record label, not the artist, being strict with copyright stuff. If I was a huge artist, I'd personally be flattered if someone was covering my stuff. People always credit the band and I've never seen anyone act like they wrote the song they're covering or commentating on. I think it's more of an effort to keep small timers down. @@chadsulski9020 the way copyright works in American law is that once a piece of music is released to the general public, it can be covered by anyone and even recorded. There are, however, royalties due to the copyright owner. To perform a song in public requires a royalty from the venue, and to distribute a recording of a song belonging to someone else merely requires a compulsory license. A compulsory license is a license with a predetermined cost based on the length of the song and how many copies are distributed, and cannot be blocked by the copyright owner. The fee for the compulsory license is divided between the licensing organization and the copyright owner.

Artists have the right to protect their intellectual property, and to make sure that people don’t get rich with their songs, but covers are usually made as a tribute. I've got a Bryan Adams one and that was no issue, but it's so helpful to spread the names of these artists. On a my previous channel I got 2 copyright notices, but no strikes. First was for the Rolling Stones, Paint it Black, which I drum covered. I had bought the music for (non-public performance) from a publishing company and the video was set to private. A few days later it got claimed by a different company, I thought it a bit weird they would do a copyright claim on a private video with half a dozen views. In the appeal I pointed out I had a for non-public performance licence from a rival publishing company and they dropped the claim the day after. The second was from Martin Carthy for a 30 second clip of him performing Scarborough Fair I used in a vid. On my current channel, out of a sense of mischief, I I'm to bait a publishing company (with a Johnny Cash cover) into giving me a claim or takedown, sadly no-one as yet has taken the hook...... Of course it's a trap if they ever do take the bait.

For anyone passing, I am one of the artists this has happened to. I can debunk some of the claims and workarounds being suggested in the comments. A few weeks ago I received a copyright strike (not a content ID claim, a full takedown and strike) from UMG for my unique cover song of Bryan Adams - Summer of 69. I didn't use or reupload any material, no audio or video from Bryan Adams or any other artists, it was a 100% unique cover song and it had a meaningless amount of views on it, roughly 200-300. What's worse, is that I have a mechanical license for this song issued by Distrokid for all online digital streaming platforms including KZbin. First of all, the copyright strike was immediate and without warning. UMG made no attempt to contact me first. Upon issuing the strike, UMG made no effort to explain why or provide any supporting reasoning for the strike. I appealed the strike, and was rejected. Worse still, KZbin gaslit me by writing that I'm abusing the appeal system. I wrote 5 or 6 emails to UMG and eventually they responded. UMG stated "your license does not cover online publishing" and also that "Bryan Adams music is not available for licensing online in any capacity". They did not care that my mechanical license covers me for DSP publishing, which is online, nor were they interested in discussing why they'd granted me a mechanical license if they don't want Bryan Adams songs to be covered. After 2 very abrupt, short and condascending emails, they ceased all contact and refused to engage further. I've seen people in the comments claim that you can buy sheet music which covers you for public performances... this doesn't, it won't make any difference. UMG will not know you own sheet music, they woni't care, they'll issue a strike and say that an online publish is different. If you feel you're in the right, you'll have to take them to court.

We should all simply use this list as a blacklist, and avoid any interaction or action which would give that label (or sometimes artists - as in the first one's mentioned) any PR or monetary income. Let them be forgotten by everyone. Oh, I had already completely forgotten about Brain Adams - that name was one I hadn't heard since forever (nor his music), but of course - if he's actively blocking his work for being known, well then. You reap what you sow.

@Aphotsirc I just got blocked not long ago trying to do "Let's Go Crazy", had to find some version with someone else singing to get it posted. I did do "Joy in Repetition" and that one didn't get blocked, so just watch out, some tunes get blocked immediately.

Hendrix is another one I've had blocked at upload. The laws are different in other countries - I've had friends from Europe send me a link to a video but I couldn't view it because I'm in the US. So just because somebody in another country can post a cover doesn't mean you'll be okay.

Don't forget there was a biopic of Hendrix a few years ago and the production company were blocked from using his music! Plus a UK TV documentary about his death had to have "Hendrix sound alike" music instead of playing genuine material. It's pathetic.

Seems counter productive to me. I would think teaching and covering songs would help promote the music? Some of which the younger generation never even heard.

First, you are doing a great service by warning unsuspecting tubers and avoid yet another massacre by ignorance. Kudos! Whatever the law or KZbin says, I think it's fair to compare the situation to what it's like outside or before KZbin. A small youtuber should be compared to an amateur cover band who collect 100$ at best from a gig and where the gig organizers are likely to be called out if they didn't pay the royalty forfeit to the collecting body and where the band is expected to provide the setlist. Read: most of that goes to the middle men anyway, so small tubers should be left in peace and KZbin itself could probably automatically share the revenue with the original author. Big youtubers should be compared to bands getting airtime with their covers, where the band or their record company should get permission and settlement prior to recording the song. This is not only about the money, but about what other people do with your song for a big (international) audience. Imagine that awful version of Sound of Silence hit KZbin without prior agreement and people think this is the original. I wouldn't be pleased being Paul Simon. Can't believe he's pleased now, but at least permission was granted by whoever has the rights (I assume Simon himself). Now to Rick Beato, Paul Davis and others, they are rather making instructional videos or doing reviews of songs and given their high professional standards, I'd rather treat them like radio stations than cover bands. Striking them with a ban is not so much morally wrong as intellectually. Still, Beato and Davis are making a livelihood out of it and can expect bands exerting their IP, up to some revenue.

Very cool of you to do this. Also, though it's been said many times and many ways, can't be said enough. F Don Henley and The Eagles! I recall years ago, long before YT. Don sought legal action against Joe Walsh, because he performed Desperado while a guest on a popular show.

Yeah I think he hit him for Life In The Fast Lane too and JOE WROTE THE RIFF! Letterman made a HILARIOUS lampooning skit about Don Henley and how idiotic he is. Henley even told Late Night Show bands to not play SNIPPETS of his songs. He's a total loser but tries to rail against captialism otherwise. Hypocrite much?

I have uploaded a few acoustic guitar and vocal cover tunes to my channel over the years (not many) and have gotten several copyright flags, the only strike I got was for an Eagles song. I didn’t know that I should have avoided any songs by them for upload. Question: I can still view it, but I know nobody else can. Should I delete the video from my channel and will it remove that strike from my “record” if I do?

Led Zeppelin have always been the most notorious for blocking. Also, Jimi Hendrix, Queen, Black Sabbath, Kiss, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and of course The Beatles. Just from my experience of making lead guitar videos and acoustic covers. This is why I prefer to cover the lesser known bands/artists that have great hit songs. Like Gerry Rafferty's "Baker Street". 🎶

If Peter Grant was still alive, he'd probably show up at your house. Whenever Zeppelin came into a town to play, he would go around the local record stores looking for stores selling Zeppelin bootlegs.

I don’t understand really. I can find tons of how to play (some using the original recordings to play along with), isolated vocal tracks from Beatles songs, etc. that have been up for years. So is it only people actually covering Beatles songs in their entirety?

G’day from Melbourne. I hope you are well 🙂. I have a small piano channel and had no copyright on Ozzy (Crazy Train), but I have had copyrights from Van Halen, Pink, Jim Diamond, The Cranberries and one on a Pianola roll of The Rainbow Connection!! Iron Maiden (Wasted Years) was okay, as was Chilli Peppers 🌶 Queensryche and Twisted Sister. It’s a bit of potluck I think. The Beatles let me play 😊 Even though they are my own arrangements and interpretations (which I work hard at) I have been lucky just to have a copyright strike and no strikes against my channel. Hope this helps a bit. Thanks for listening and keep up the good work 😘

Thanks man, glad someone is standing up to this noncence. I'm lucky, most of the artists that block covers on YT I don't like anyways. Was very surprized to hear Adams and the cars are blockers, I love those guys. Maybe not so much any more ): I heard Zep and Floyd are and the be#tles, I could be wrong. My channel isn'y for making money, plus I have other content on there, covers are only a smal lpercentage. also I'm not in the USA.

When I covered it about 2 years ago, instant block. I kept trying and after about my sixth attempt it got through. I've since pulled it however. They can't get em all I suppose, however you're playing with fire as far as the eagles are concerned. These small one-off bedroom type players covering hotel California aren't gonna get hurt very much by a strike however.

Good point to add here. KZbin seems much less hostile these days with regards to strikes. At least over the past few years. Like I said, I have over 1000 videos, many of them covers, and I've only been striked once. I think it was much more prevalent 10 to 20 years ago.

Good information. Thanks. I have several cover songs (two Ramones songs, one America song and a cover of Wipeout) I did just for fun on my channel along with mostly music I wrote and played myself. I make no money from youtube and I'm fine with that because that's not what I'm after. There is one instructional video I have that has had commercials on it. Now that kind of pisses me off a bit. I realize I get to post stuff for free, but still....
