Musicians FOCAL DYSTONIA - The end of a musicians career???

Great information, I'm in the process of re-training my hands right now for the last 6 months or so and FINALLY am starting to re-gain control of them, dystonia is a musicians nightmare!

I was a extraordinary drummer that was diagnosed in my right hand in 1988. I worked with many specialist trying home relaxation, Drumstick with a velcro rough sided ring on stick, botox injections and image exercises before sleep. In a span of 10 years (1998) it was cleared in my right hand and switched to my left hand which I am dealing with today. Very long road and retraining work. I have learned to adapt and continue to work on exercises. Thanks for the information! The UC San Francisco specialist Nancy Bill was working with me and Dr. Frank Wilson Nuelogist in Northern California. I was one of their earlier patients. I am seeking any new breakthroughs for a cure for Focal Dystonia. Please post if so. Thanks! Marc Pieruccini

Just a note about the fingering hand and FD: World-class UK bassist Scott Devine suffers from Focal Dystonia, and at one time thought his career was over. He can play once again, (better than ever) thanks to wearing a glove! His brand of choice is Musician's Practice Glove. He has a youtube video called "Why I Wear the Glove". For the Classical Guitarist the picking hand ideally has no glove but possible help with FD can be had using a glove on the picking hand... if possible cut out the fingertips of the glove for fingertip contact.

That sounds like a very accurate description of Focal Dystonia. Although, my symptoms appeared gradually over a period of years until I lost all skills in my left hand. You can see my videos on utube. Violinist with Focal Dystonia. Thank you for posting.

You should look into Dr.Joaquin Fabra. He has been curing musicians since the late 90's.

Quite true ! The Creator had a limited edition of beautiful pair of eyes. He selected only a very few with beautiful faces, and you are one of them ! In my next Life, I will marry a Girl Violinist. I'll do the cooking and she will play the violin for me !
