Casey has been unquestionably a great addition to the Morse/Portnoy franchise. FC has had some stellar moments and this guy is certainly the reason. Another great interview.

30:10, and Neal's story of "I Remember You" ... I almost lived that (without the anger, in my case). My father had dementia. Days before he died, I went to visit him in his care home. The residents were just being gathered in a function room, each being given a piece of percussion for a "music" session. I came into the room, my dad saw me and called out: "That's my son!" We went and sat by a window, talked (sort of), prayed (sort of). Eventually, I had to go (back across the Atlantic, actually). Days later he breathed his last. What a precious memory - and just hearing that song title stirred it all again. I remember....

Loving these! I've heard Neal mention a few times about how he was crushed by the mixing on The Light. I used to have a prog band and we hired a dude who has a pretty high profile in the genre to record and mix an album for us. Tracking was awesome, dude was so quick and he dialed me in a fantastic bass tone. Anyway, he invites us over to hear the final mix and he and my bandmates are bulls*itting while the album is playing and I was listening and thinking, "Oh no. This sounds terrible. He ruined our album." I didn't say anything at the time. We all took CDs home and sure enough my bandmates also realized the album sounded like crap. We spent a couple of weeks agonizing about it: "Who's gonna tell him this sucks? What if he gets pissed off?" We ended up going back and telling him about the general sound of the album and that we weren't sure about the mix and he said, "Oh, hold on, let me take something out." Apparently he had doubled a lot of tracks and it just sounded bad. He killed this one track with all his doubling and effects and suddenly the album sounded great, it breathed and had space. Thankfully he was totally cool about it and no ego situation at all. But I will never forget the despondency I felt for those couple of weeks. I thought "we just spent 5 figures on this dude after writing our butts off for six months and now the album is ruined."

It’s really nice to discover that the meaning you interpreted from a song is ACTUALLY what the writers were thinking. It’s also cool to find out that the guys whose music you enjoy so much actually are the kind of people you hoped they were. I hope you do one of these with Steve so we get some of the dry wit firsthand.

Guys, thank you for this chat so much. Me and my best friend were at London that night and it was honestly the best concert we've ever been to. Neal, when you said it was a spiritual night, it really was - thank you for coming. I'm so excited to catch you at shows in the future. Take care both of you and god bless.
