In 1991, I was a delegate at an international architectural conference in Piestany, Slovakia. There were two Mongolian architects there who throat-sang unaccompanied for us one evening in a cellar bar. It was one of the most profound musical occasions I've ever experienced. The Hu is a wee reminder of it.

7:23 the 2 “stringed” instrument is the Morin Khuur (Horsehead Fiddle), traditionally the 2 “strings” are made from the tail hairs of the Player’s own horse, the “Male” (thicker) string has 150 hairs, the “Female” (thinner) string has 130 hairs. I read that the sign of a Master Morin Khuur player is they can mimic the whinny/neigh of a horse and Falcon cries with the instrument. The 3 stringed instrument that looks like a guitar is a Tovshuur (Mongolian Lute), and is customized to resemble a Mongolian bow & arrow.

The instruments are: Morin Khuur (морин хуур) - horse headed fiddle Tovshuur (товшуур) - three sting lute I like their Mongolian versions of their songs and covers I say that as they have worked with American singers and I think it loses something. Yuve Yuve Yu - is great and definitely has a more western rock vibe to it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rGXbi4ioZad4nKc They did a cover in Mongolian of Metallica Sad But True kzbin.info/www/bejne/h6HbcpKQrayLla8 They played Hellfest in France in 2023 and ARTE the Franco-German arts channel covered their concert and it is on KZbin: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ip3Jq4SXg9GGrtE Enjoy!

Love this band.🤘🔥🤘 They have lots of heavier stuff but I prefer their ballads and collabs "Song of Women" with Lzzy Hale from Halestorm and "Mother Earth" with LP from the USA. The Morin Khuur is the Horse head fiddle with the protective eye on top to ward away sour notes and evil spirits.😏 Great reaction guys👍 🥰🥰Dimash Dear from Canada🇨🇦

The 'throat singing' wasn't that obvious in this video. In some videos, these guys can even reach a sort of whistling sound, which is a form of throat singing as well. And yes, this is a sort of Mongolian war cry. I guess you guys didn't notice they mentioned their greatest and one of the most feared leaders in history: Djengis Khan?

I've heard this is actually a Mongolian war chant, if so, it very much seems to be about countering attacking strategies. Lions attack ferociously, you you fight till the end; you attempt to tire out and and outlast the lion. Tigers are strategic strikers, so you 'battle' them and force them to meet you on open ground, provocation by legitimate attack. Elephants (like Fiore's elephant and castle) are defensive juggernauts who seem to have no weakness so you have little choice but to fight with "rage", poke and prod at every angle until you tease out a weakness.

On a similar, but different, vein, check out "Altay", which is a collaboration between Ummet Ozcan and Otyken (pronounced "oh-too-ken"). Ummet is a Dutch/Turkish DJ, singer, & producer, who also does quite a bit of throat singing. Otyken (pronounced "oh-too-ken") is a group of indigenous Siberian musicians and singers; they also have a throat singer in the band, who sings in a different style. They both have a bunch of great tracks individually as well.

Throat singing comes in multiple types from different cultures, this type, Tuvan/Mongolian throat singing style called "Kargyraa." The 2 videos that I've seen that explain it, one very recent, are: Brandon Acker - How to Throat Sing like in DUNE! kzbin.info/www/bejne/jXXZl4h3e7CEfrM (very recent but maybe not the best, Brandon is much better at guitars and lute) and Chris Liepe (with a clip from Will Ramos) - How to do Throat Singing RIGHT (and why it's so awesome for grit, screams & cleans) kzbin.info/www/bejne/i526qYt5qd2blac is much better and given he is a vocal coach probably much more technical. There is also an Inuit type which is very different, it is, from what I understand, a kind of traditional women's game where 2 women sing at each other kind of like a friendly duel (I'm sure there is more to it than that). Global Affairs Canada - Inuit Throat Singing and Stoney Nakoda Dancing at UNPFII kzbin.inforgpVBIJPjGs There are a few Inuit musicians that have used it in modern music, the most well known is probably Tanya Tagaq, TEDx Talks - kzbin.info/www/bejne/mqbQp4ywm9qHZtk her songs with music are very different, do not follow western/modern music styles (some might say jarring) and the lyrics are politically outspoken (correctly pointing out issues where the Canadian government did some bad shit that wasn't right (as a Canadian I'm mad they did it and embarrassed they have not corrected their actions). If you react to her do not expect many views (musical tastes, modern culture, and the KZbin algorithm being what they are), but that doesn't mean her voice should not be heard.

The Hu means The People, the Mongolian Nation. The horseman flies the Black Banner of War of Gengis Khan's dreaded armies. His totem was the wolf. When the band sings that they will strike the enemy with the wrath of Heaven, they actually mean the wrath of God. Heaven, known as Tengris in mongolian, is the monotheistic god of several mongolian and turkish populations. The mongolian warrior and his war horse are one, a symbol of both freedom and military prowess. Metal horses replaced real ones, but the ancient battle song is still remembered!

the animals were old countries symbols; china (tigers ), india (elephants ) etc. wolf is ancient symbol of turkic and mongolia. turks believe their roots came from wolves. weirdly also american indians into wolves so much, they are also shamanic as asian turkic people. thanks for reaction.

At the beginning, when they we showing the CG stuff, there were some high pitched whistles. That was throat singing too, it's not all low. Batzorig Vannchig is an excellent throat singer but more traditional, not rock at all, but greater range. I love the Hu' I saw them open for Babymetal a couple times and they were terrific.

Have you heard no throat singing? There’s interesting stuff on the Steppes, birthplace of Genghis Khan, who put together the largest contiguous empire from China to the Danube. Mathais Duplessy is a French musician who has incorporated throat singing in a few of his songs. Try the song Abaden Dareh for an example of his throat singing. Duplessey has traveled and fuses innumerable instruments and musicians from various countries in his works.
