When speaking about Red Like Rose's Part II, you can dig into the lyrics and notice that much of it speaks about fairy tales and books. It's very dark and dreadful. However, if you remember in the show, Ruby says that Yang used to always read her bedtime stories and Ruby wanted to grow up just like the heroes in the books. But in the case of this song, those fairy tales don't end like they do in the books. However, you can make an educated guess that Ruby doesn't want to be a Huntress necessarily because of those books. Instead, the pain she suffered as she was little after losing her mother pushed her to create her own fairy tale with a happy ending, making sure that no one else has to suffer through the pain that she deals with every night. I have more I can add, but I'll stay away from spoilers, but there are a couple of lines here and there throughout the show that points to Ruby following the same path as Summer, but in a different way.

I'm not going to stay your wrong but we don't actually know for sure what happened to summer rose, they say she died in the show but we never learn any specifics and if I'm not mistaken they never even found a body, im pretty sure that grave on the cliff in the forever fall (i think thats the forest its in but I could be wrong) is just a headstone not a proper grave. So it'd be difficult for Ruby to go down the same path as a character that we don't actually know what happened to as of yet.

Yeah so the soundtrack realy adds to characters and foreshadows some stuff but there are some that are just there for fun like i burn which is just yang being well yang So there is like atleast one rap section in a song each volume except v3 and has yet to be determined for v6 since we are still waiting on the ost to release Can't wait for v2 soundtrack and nice review guys

Damn, this was really a nice reaction to the soundtrack, specially because we get to see how good or bad the songs really are from a musician's perspective, which is awesome. Can't wait for you guys to get to the other volumes as well, since there is a gap of 1 year between each soundtrack, so by the time we get season 6 soundtrack in a month, she'd be around her 20's already. I am REALLY enjoying these breakdowns!!! One o hte other things to notice is that in itne future volumes certain of these songs do appear (and you did touch on this somewhat) as leimotifs or recurring musical references throughout the later volume OSTs. "I May Fall" wasn't originally supposed to appear in V1 at all; it got used as the ending piece in one of the episodes in V1 inadvertently. And yes, its Crowning Moment of Awesome is in Volume 3. I really hope you do this level of breakdown with all the soundtracks. I'm really enjoying this.

Hey guys I know I'm a week late but just wanted to say I loved the review and didn't know if you guys knew that MANY of the songs of the Vol 1-3 were literally created with specific fight choreography in mind. Jeff and Monty worked hand in hand so that the major beats of the fight would match up with the major beats of the song. So many times when the song premiered in the show, that was literally all that was created at the time. THEN Jeff and Casey went back and finished the song afterwards for the soundtrack. But yeah I enjoyed the review and hope you guys continue to enjoy both RWBY and it's amazing music!

I think the dminor is primarily to do with Casey's range at the time, because it allows for her head and high chest voices to co-exist quite well, and allows for movement up without obstructing her voice in a way that starting in say eminor would as at 14/15 you couldn't ask for a chest voice belted a or b (after key changing)

I really liked the analysis!! Because i dont know much about music and stuff, i just enjoy it haha But on the other part…. im here like "no, no.... wait… you are losing an important line here! Listen/read the lyrics!" hahaha but yeah, im sure you guys understood them well enough, like some comments say, some of these really make sense later in the series, and some others are left to open interpretation even right now on V6, i swear i hear songs from the first Volumes and im like "this applies now…." but its nothing confirmed. A suggestion - when you do the Volume 2 and 3 soundtracks, do the remixes of the older songs. They are quite different and truly amazing. I particularly love Volume 3's slow version of Season 2's opening "Time to Say Goodbye." As musicians, I think you'll get more out of the remakes than most and I'd love to see your thoughts on the changes and how tonal/tempo shifts can make a song truly different. Also, great reaction, and to the show as well - you have a sub!

you guys are spot on that the songs don't have to be rooted in what is currently happening. i just want to point out that red like roses 2 is more about taiyang and summer (ruby's dad/mom). i find it compelling that summer's part is sung by a man and taiyang's part by a woman. the sacrifice trope is inverted (its usually the man dying for the woman), and the inverted lyrical roles convey that taiyang and summer can understand how the other person is feeling.

I actually feel like Red Like Roses Pt 2 is a Yang song, not Ruby. There's a lot of anger in the daughter's lyrics, which is A) something Yang has had problems with, B) something i don't think we've ever seen out of Ruby, and C) I don't think Ruby was old enough to have many memories of Summer to get mad *about* That volume 2 scene where Yang tells Blake about going to look for Summer - Ruby was *very* young - young enough that Yang brought her along in a wagon instead of walking with her, and it probably occurred once Taiyang was 100% certain she wasn't coming back, and who knows how long before that she'd left.

We know that Ruby is only 2 years younger, and like you said Yang was old enought to take care of her sister. So ruby has memories of her mother like when she use her special power. And one of the lyrics say " I wasn't dreaming when they told me you were gone", so when Taiyang and Yang said it to Ruby. And if this was Yang song i don't think she could say"You were the one I needed, and you left me" because Yang need to take care of Ruby, so she didn't only need Summer, maybe Raven but this song don't speak about Raven. I hope my argumentation was clear and right. So it's ruby song.
