A Tour of Vince Gill's Vintage Guitar Collection

Back in 2012 we visited country legend Vince Gill at his home studio in Nashville, TN to check out some of the rarest instruments in his collection of vintage acoustic and electric guitars.
From the the guitar he learned to play on, his father's vintage Gibson ES-125T, to the 1942 Martin D-28 herringbone he bought at age 18, to his 1960 slab board Fender Stratocaster, Vince shares some of his favorite instruments and the stories behind how he got them.

While living in Nashville I would regularly see Vince eating breakfast at Noshville diner after his workout at the Green Hills YMCA. He's just a regular guy in Nashville. The sign at the Pancake Pantry says, "No Reservations, Even Vince Gill waits in line here".

Anytime I've ever seen Vince Gill interviewed I think, "Now that's the kind of guy you would want as a friend". He doesn't seem to have an ounce of hostility, arrogance or dishonesty. They don't come any better. I'd even buy a used car from him. : )

I really admire the passion he has for these guitars. They're not just pieces of wood and strings, or museum pieces to him. He truly appreciates them for what they are, and can absolutely play them to their utmost potential. If he were just some rich dude who likes to buy extremely expensive guitars, but couldn't play a lick, then people could hate on him, but that's certainly not the case.

Wow! A 1928 Martin 000-45... that guitar has a beautiful tone and the very reason they will cost you between $90,000 to over $150,000. That one I would lock in a safe if it were in my home. Vince has an amazing collection and he deserves every one of them.

If you're a musician and you've got the cash there is nothing better than having a collection of instruments, large or small at your disposal. There to play, safeguard and love. We are only visitors to God's beautiful world once, and for a short time. These are the tools of a musicians trade and in the right hands anything is possible. A musician friend, no longer here, told me never feel guilty or self doubt ownership of instruments when they are there to be played. That was always enough to reassure me. Thanks Mark. When I turned 21 (a thousand years ago) my dear mother bought me a mid-range Ibanez acoustic. Nothing special. I took guitar lessons from a guy called Peter Rawkins and he had a great ear. The crappy intonation annoyed him and so he changed the nut and saddle and lowered the action and showed me how to tweak the truss rod and that bloody thing rang like a bell. Still does 37 years later. You can have your pre-war martins and a 100 guitars in drawers (and I’m jealous) but really, you only have two hands and can only play one guitar at a time. When people ask “what’s the best guitar you have ever played?” I say the next one I get to pick up. Such a privilege to just play what you have and enjoy it.

My dad is a heavy metal/hard rock guitarist. Back in the early 90's when i was a kid, we were watching the Today show and Vince came on singing that duet he did with Amy. My dad was shitting on him saying "not this shit again" because he always heard it on the radio. Then, Vince ripped into one of his solos in a country/bluegrass picking song of his. I've never seen my dad shut up so quick in my life. He actually took the time to study chicken picking on guitar because of Vince. i was floored, naturally.

I heard somewhere that Merle Haggard went to visit the Country Music Hall Of Fame. He referred to the singers there including himself. (As the chosen few). I am here to say that Vince Gill is for sure one of the chosen few. Vince has more talent is his little finger then most stars out there today. Vince can play any instrument he touches. He can sang like no other. And he has a heart for his fellow man. The man has a love for music instruments. Maybe Vince was born to late in life.Naaa, I think Vince came along at the right moment. I bought a Martin D12-35 new in 1974 and like an idiot, I sold it in 1982 (I needed the money at the time). I always kicked myself for that decision. But then about 2 years ago, I was sitting on the John at work (really) and to ass the time I was browsing through Craigs List on my iPhone. Just for grins I plugged "Martin" into the search window and all of the sudden, there it was - someone about 3 hours south of me selling was selling a 1974 Martin D12-35! The price was actually very reasonable based on similar guitars I'd seen in EBay, so I called the person and told them to consider it sold! I have a 1974 D12-35 again after al those years and I will NEVER sell this one!

I got a beautiful sunburst Gibson Les Paul standard in 2003 for Christmas from my dad when I was 18, and foolishly (looking back) 5 years later in college I traded it for a Fender 52 reissue hot rod Telecaster because I wanted to play country music at the time but didn’t have the money. I still to this day regret that decision not necessarily for the guitar itself but because it was such an amazing gift from my dad and should’ve held on to it forever. Maybe I’ll find one just like it one day.

Those vintage 000-45 and OM-45 are stunning and sound like something coming off the front porch of Heaven. The triple 0 and OM bodies have always been beautiful and sounded incredible, but that 45 aesthetics combined with their tone are pure works of art. Those are the 1958,59, and 60 Les Paul sunbursts of the acoustic guitar world for me. And he has both! Superb video and while I've never been into country music I can sure step back and appreciate this guy's collection and his passion for finely made guitars.

Vince came up the hard way in music wondering around bluegrass festivals, bar bands for pizza and beer money in some one horse Oklahoma town. Semi stardom when he got a break to play for PPL. Struggled around Nashville for several years before he started making great songs with his great voice one of the best in music history and the more little known fact about Vince he might be one of the greatest musicians walking on this earth today. He can wear out anything in he puts in his hands from country to rock to bluegrass he's a once in a lifetime talent!

I met your dad at Surrey Hills Country Club one night while I was tending bar and he told me some stories about you when you first started taking lessons. He told me the teacher said you did not want to learn to read music. You dad said can he play? The teach said yes, what ever I play for him he plays it right back to me, you dad told him well just play for him son. Great story. I know you worked at the club as a youngster. I have 3 acoustics - 1 beater for the porch, 1 new one with a pick-up, and a 47-year-old D-18 that I bought new and that has never let me down. I still miss the Epiphone/Gibson Sunburst that I traded in for the D-18 in 1973. I never realized when I picked up my Dad’s uke at age 12 that I was starting something that would give me a lifetime of enjoyment, peace, and comfort.

Vince Gill is an amazing example of how one can become a bonafide star, successful beyond measure, and still remain down-to-earth and sincere. It may seem impossible for one to be showing off a zillion-dollar guitar collection and still appear like a regular guy, but I think a large amount of his success was born out his love for music and he recognizes that.

The people that are talking shit about Vince Gill are clearly jealous of him. He's been a very successful musician for many many years, so he has the financial resources to afford such a collection. Remember, I'm sure some of his guitars were free, because all those celebrity guitar players get free instruments, and also, he's worth millions of dollars, so him dropping 75K on a vintage guitar, is like most of us buying a pack of gum, it isn't shit. And lets not forget the insurance claim from those flood damaged instruments he lost, I'm sure that gave him plenty to go do some guitar shopping with.

The Gibson ES-125 is severely underrated. My great grandfather bought one after WW2 and now my grandfather owns it. One day I hope to own it as well. It's beautifully worn in and plays like a dream. They're not considered high-end guitars but if it's an heirloom it's priceless.

Plenty of people collect random things and they sit in a box and never get used. Vince shares his beauties with the world through his music. What more could you ask of a man?
