Man, Eddie was not only a shredding God, he was basically an engineer. Maybe he didn't have a PhD in electrical engineering on paper but hell if he didn't grasp all the concepts of electronics and how magnetic pickups work, how potentiometers work, how power supplies work, how vacuum tubes work, how speakers operate, how the physics of harmonics work, how sound can be manipulated with tone controls, all the electronics and physics behind it all...... he was a master of his complete domain. No joke. And those guitars, besides having the monster EVH tone, are absolutely beautiful to look at. RIP Eddie. You pushed the boundaries of playing guitar beyond anyone's wildest imaginations and you brought along with it your own electronics for your own sound. You'll never be forgotten.
@joe60964 жыл бұрын
@@calsurf21 Eddie said when he got his very first amplifier, it wasn't loud enough for him even though he had every knob turned all the way up. So he went to a local electronics store and asked what he needed to make an amplifier make more power. The guy at the shop told him he needed a variable power transformer to boost the voltage up from the 120 volts in the standard household electrical supply in North America. So he bought a cheap used one, plugged it into his amp, cranked it up, and that was the genesis of the EVH sound! Eddie said when the movie Spinal Tap came out he laughed when they said they go to 11 because he'd been going to 15 already for years lol!

@@joe6096 Dude your story is bullshit, no point saying i'm funny. You're the one posting misinformation. You want schooled? OK son... EVH had a Marshall 100W SLP. It was FAR too loud to be used, was always causing complaints and no matter what he did, it was too loud. He purchased a second one used and when he plugged it in, it didn't come on properly. After a while once it warmed up, it was operating but quieter. It was set for UK 220v not USA 110v. Lucky because the opposite in UK would result in a blown Marshall... So he went to an electronics place and asked if anyone made anything to control the voltage to the amp, industrial even. Then they suggested the Variac. So EVH would have the amp at 110V and run it a bit lower from 80V upwards. Resulted in slightly lower volumes but a saggy/spongey type feel from the amp with ability to still distort. There's a lot more to that era EVH signal chain than this though but it's defo a part of it.

I've played the Music Man, Peavey Wolfgang & the new Fender EVH, Without a doubt the Peavey USA models felt the best with the raw maple neck.. Just about all the new EVH guitars I've come across had the fret ends sticking out sharp & felt like $#!+..

file down those sharp frets I use those wal mart nail file combo blocks buy , the different grain colored kind just put tape on the wood , then file off those sharp fret edges

Eddie I have liked you since your first album and you are doing great things with making quality guitars. I enjoyed what I heard and saw on the last tour BUT please do yourself a favor and put away the cigarettes. I quit 25 years ago and I have the energy of 17 year. Quitting was about the toughest thing I've ever done which is a good reason to stop and never start up again. I'd like you to be around for a long time. I'll probably pick up one of your newer Wolfgang guitars and see how it compares with the Peavey version. Keep on Rockin !!!

This is a really good point about the Cancer Sticks-Edward is a really smart fellow and should know that his friends and fans would listen to him about quiting-my friends have used the vapor-type cigarettes-and it appears to have saved their lives.I have been fortunate in that I have a biology degree and know like everyone else-that tongue cancer is not from putting his Guitar Pick in his mouth during *Eruption* no matter what they are made of. I have a EVH Wolfgang-Sunburst-Love it Best!

I'm quite certain Ed knew about his throat cancer at this point, but here he was smoking away. It sucks, because it didn't have to happen. Smoking and drinking (both of which Ed did in copious amounts) causes throat, tongue and mouth cancers.

You just have to imagine how invincible he must have felt for most of his adult life. I mean he was a god from the time he was a young adult. He just thought, "Fuck it, I'm Eddie Van Halen, I can have a cigarette [or ten] anytime I like." I mean why shouldn't he think that way? He was a young man who owned the world; it would happen to many of us if we were put in that situation. Sad that it finally caught up with him, as these things usually do.

Prob more to do with all the coke and speed than the cigs
@STSGuitar164 жыл бұрын
@@backstage4035 Well, mouth and esophageal cancer would suggest that cigs had a LOT to do with it; he even continued smoking while he had cancer as far as I know. But you’re right, it goes along with what I said about him feeling invincible. That hard living lifestyle caught up with him in the end.

@TheDmonet4 жыл бұрын
@@backstage4035 Nah, the things he died from were related mostly to smoking and drinking. His heart probably didn't have many years left in it either with all the stimulants he'd done, they would have gotten him eventually too. Sad for his family, and I'm sad as a fan. The smoking was something I never had any interest in emulating, thankfully, because he was the closest thing I had to a teenage idol.

@@ckmoore101 Why do you guys keep repeating that? That's just what Eddie said. There's nothing to back that up. What's more likely...a non-carcinogenic pick giving him cancer or decades of chain smoking? He claims he got it exactly where he put his picks? Yeah? How many hundreds of thousands of cigarettes did he put in his mouth over the decades? But sure, it was a metal pick. I mean come on.

@Vichedges4 жыл бұрын
@@ckmoore101 I don’t need to be an expert to know cigarettes give you cancer and metal picks don’t. The dude chain smoked for decades. I get he’s your hero but reality is reality. I had chain smoking relatives too, some of them died from cancer, none of them were in good health pay around 60. Hi you talk about my “qualifications”? I forgot Eddie was a doctor. And I’m sure all his doctors told him to quit smoking but he kept right on smoking like a chimney. My aunt who raised me (I called her “mom” but she was actually my dad’s brother’s wife, my real parents died when I was 2) died from stokes and basic bad health, all brought on by decades of smoking. She was only 66 but a heavy smoker her whole life. My grandma had to have oxygen bottles the last years of life and could barely move. 2 of my chain smoking aunts died from cancer. This isn’t 1950 where doctors smoked cigarettes on TV. It literally says they can cause cancer right on the fucking pack.
