I wanted a Peavy EVH back when they came out in the 90's. I was in high school then and the purple one was my favorite. One day at school I saw a kid perform at a battle of the bands and he had a pink one. The sound of it live blew me away. Same when I saw Eddie live in '93. Wolfie's done an amazing job keeping his dads tradition of chasing tone alive. I'd love one of these or one of Wolfie's new signature semi-hollow body models. Btw thank you for all the amazing music and videos. I've been a huge fan for a long time now and seeing your videos show up in my feed is always a delight.

I also got my Wolfgang(Peavey) by watching the used guitars at the local shops. I got a late 90s purple USA Standard Wolfgang(no maple top, just basswood) for $400 many years ago. I put that thing through hell over almost 20+ years of owning it. During the pandemic I decided to give it some TLC and stripped the paint because I had painted it several times and refinished the whole guitar with a purple sparkle finish and bought a new EVH neck for it because I found an EVH roasted maple neck and it was way cheaper and quicker to buy a whole new neck than have the original Peavey neck re-fretted.

This is only my experience with an EVH Wolfgang special you're mileage may vary. Bought one from my local shop, and I think I paid $965 not cheap over $1000 with tax. It was Stealth black and I liked it played great and sounded good for rock not great clean. Even though I am a VH fan I don't play or sound like Eddie or have any desire to. Well after the first spring the fret sprout was pretty bad so I filed it off. After doing this for 3 years I finally had enough and moved the guitar on. Now I know some of you will say I needed a humidifier. But none of the other guitars I had hanging in the room suffered the same fate. I basically comes down to Fender not drying the wood properly. Really feel like I got taken by Fender.
@MainPrism5 ай бұрын
Damn that blows man. I paid almost $1400 for mine brand new after taxes. I've never had a single problem with it. Came set up perfectly and I've never had to change anything in 2 years of having mine or had any fret sprout of any kind. Must have just gotten the exception that proves the rule?
@jayguitar5 ай бұрын
So sorry to hear about the issues with your guitar man! Fret sprout sucks. Sometimes it is just the piece of wood which isn’t dry enough during building and shrinks over time as the moisture evaporates. I’ve had it on just one guitar many years ago and no amount of dehumidifiers could stop it. I ended up leaving the neck off the guitar for about 3 or 4 years and then using it again, it had dried out and was stable after that. Anyways, I hope you found another guitar that worked for you. Have an amazing day!

Or... what? LOL I want to try to do one! I think I want to do the 5150 with the Spalted Maple. I own a Standard in Battleship Gray. I could do something with it. I also have (2) Specials... in Sonic Boom... and the Purple Solid Metallic. I can't mess with them. But... I might pick up a used Spalted Maple and try to do something like what you've done here. Great instrumental jay. However it sounds a lot more like George Lynch than EVH. But that is fine. It is obvious Lynch is a HUGE influence for you . Even the chords and the tone of the guitar sounds so much like George. Sounds great as always.
@jayguitar5 ай бұрын
Thanks for the kind words! I appreciate you taking the time to listen and comment. While I'm flattered by the George Lynch comparison (he's a fantastic guitarist), I have to respectfully disagree on the influence here. This track was actually heavily inspired by Eddie Van Halen, especially the chord progressions which I borrowed from songs like 'Panama' and the later albums. EVH, Nuno, Warren DeMartini and Reb Beach has always been my north star when it comes to guitar playing and composing music for a number of years now. As for Lynch, while I admire his work, he wasn't on my mind for this one. It's funny how our ears can pick up different vibes! Maybe it’s from my previous Lynch-inspired work 😉 Thanks again for listening and for the thoughtful feedback! Have an awesome day!

Hi Jay, you having such a good PRS, would be great and interesting to know your opinion about which guitars are better, the more economical PRS SE, like SE-CE24. Mc Carthy, SE DGT etc or these EVH wolfgang Standard?
@jayguitar5 ай бұрын
That’s a really good and interesting question. Both are superb value for money I think and each serve a slightly different purpose I feel rather than one being better than the other. The EVH is iconic in being a representation of Eddie, so the high output humbuckers, the Floyd, the narrow neck - and I love that about the Wolfgang. It’s a perfect high gain monster I find. The PRS has a slightly fuller neck, it is a little wider too so some people find that more comfortable, the humbuckers are hot but not too hot so they serve up everything from bluesy tones to high gain heaven. I love the body shape of PRS guitars and the general feel is something that really suits me. there is a difference in scale length too - the EVH has the traditional 25.5 inch ‘Fender’ scale, while the PRS has a 25 inch scale. I actually prefer the 25 inch scale. it works for my hands and playing. So, like I said, different tools, both fantastic and both a pleasure to have in my collection. I hope that helps! Have an amazing day!
