Great analysis, thank you! The only thing that was missing was a bit more of a connection to the lyrics and theme. To me the pitch shifts are either gear shifts or turns. The whole song is structured like a car ride. It goes into half-time right when it says "red lights, stop signs" (which, btw, I am pretty sure, are in a Lorde song, complete with those words...could be mixing it up, though). Right before that there is another pitch/gear shift, as the car is slowing down. In the end, she goes by the house again not once, but twice. Seemingly infinite, as it ends then. If you loop the song, it literally never ends and flows back into the beginning each time. This might be too literal an interpretation, but works for me. It's the most mundane of subject matter, but it's well-constructed and performed in every aspect. Songs like this are much improved by incorporating some kind of theme into the sonic landscape. Bille Eilish also did this many times, already back with Ocean Eyes. That song has a "water-y" production.

I feel like the bridge is the real hook of the song, when you listen you’re waiting to get to that part. Is there a formal term or label to describe when the bridge is the hook of the song? Or is it just a really good bridge?
@MusicIsAVerb3 жыл бұрын
Oh man, that's super interesting to me. There's one way you could look at this song where the entirety of what I'm calling the chorus is really still the pre-chorus, and so we get a Verse-PC-Verse-PC that finally leads us into the chorus by the end of the song (what I'm calling the bridge in my video.) At the end of the day I do think I would rather call it just a really great bridge, because no matter what you call the sections, this song is "A-B-A-B-C-B" just like any other pop tune. The truly subversive thing they do is in playing with the dynamics of those sections, so the bridge winds up being the high point of the song energy-wise.

Really love your videos. Just discovered them today. Over my head theory wise, but musically clarifies so much. The BEST part of your videos to me, and something I hope you never change, is how you can deliver an extensive thought in one continuous take. I am so sick of videos micro chopped together just to make a sentence much, less a whole paragraph worth of words. Well done! Subscribed.
