Technically a power "chord" isn't even a chord because it only consists of 2 notes, the root note and the perfect 5th.

But.... those open chords were already triads, they were only three note chords, with some repeating notes of course, but still only three notes.
@MorbidGuardian
@MorbidGuardian 7 жыл бұрын
When he says triads, I think he means playing only the essential three notes without having any repeating ones. By playing only the three essential notes, this allows you to move up and down the fretboard more freely, creating more dynamic sounds.

@MorbidGuardian
@MorbidGuardian 7 жыл бұрын
I don't really think he's wrong. According to what I know--and maybe I'm wrong--a triad refers specifically to the three essential notes of a chord, not any repeated notes. An open G-chord, for instance, is not a major triad itself, but it contains a few triads within it. It'd be helpful to message Music Is Win directly, since he's a Berkley trained musician and I'm only an amateur. He could probably clarify his statements better than me, since he has a larger body of knowledge.
@Boons___1
@Boons___1 7 жыл бұрын
Dave B You're right. That is what Music is Win means. He even demonstrate it in his example. He also mentions other triads,like minor,augmented and diminished. He even brings up inversions with said triads. And I'm pretty sure that when he speaks of triads he litterally mean just the three notes of a chord.

Yea the term he's really looking for is chord "voicings." Basically, for each chord the goal is to find its various voicings along the neck. To keep it simple, he's suggesting using just 3 notes (the triad that supports the chord, eliminating things like a flat 7th or add9) and finding all the different voicings for those. Once you're able to do this, your chord progressions will start to sound different than the open chords on the neck (Low Pitched G Chord, High Pitched D Chord, C Chord somewhere in the middle). Because you can start your G chord at a higher pitch so the movement from your G chord to your D chord can actually be a move DOWN in pitch

Just watched a documentary on Bob Weir(Grateful Dead), and he was talking about his style of playing. He was just the "rhythm guitarist"(next to Jerry), but utilized the triads and such all up and down the neck. He said that this was so things always sounded fresh, and never dull. Love the channel!👍🏻 🤘🏻👹🤘🏻

I've been playing guitar for a few years now and am "pretty good" for the most part, but because I taught myself (after already having learned a couple of different instruments) I feel like I missed a LOT of the fundamentally important techniques and tricks that most guitarists pick up in a more logical way. With that said, I am so grateful you make these videos. They are so calming to watch and I have learned a lot even in the few weeks I have been subscribed. Practically applying theory can be tricky, but you make it really enjoyable. I'll definitely be buying your Super System course in the near future, and hopefully more thereafter!

I like those because the finger positions are more closely a lead position also helping the player add notes in between the chords . Rock allows even 2 finger chord roots to change keys or chords ! Any position that has a high over top finger position like a standard Gmajor limits your ability to flow so I like a lower position for a quick hammering note and change ! Rarely do I play a standard D major because of position problems , unless a slow tempo is played like a turn-around chord !

I like this video and I don't want to look like a know-it-all (or stupid) but if anyone feels a bit frustrated with terminology try 'Music Theory for Dummies' which explains that major chords are the 1st, 3rd and 5th notes of the major scale. If you try it on a keyboard starting from C so you don't need any black keys everything becomes clear. To invert you simply hold the root 1st and the third then go down an octave and press the equivalent 5th. Similarly hold the 3rd and 5th and go up for the next highest equivalent 1st. It's a standard method with jazz piano where you can beef the whole thing out with two hands on a keyboard. On a guitar it boils down to the three major chord shapes. You'll probably find this in other Dummies books as well. I hope this helps.

by 'Triad' you mean "inversion". Every chord built with three letters a third apart in western harmony is a triad. Depending on how those 3 letters are arranged and played on the guitar neck or piano, will give you the various inversions of any triad.
@krang07
@krang07 7 жыл бұрын
I thought you were going to say, just add the major 9th to the chord. lol but ya. Playing different inversions of the chords in a progression is very friendly to the ears. :-) Tell them what inversions are if they don't know. Instead of the order of notes you play in a chord is 1,3,5 , it could be 5,1,3 or 3,5,1 or 1,5,3 and could be on any 3 strings on the neck.

spookybaba A triad is a generic three notes figure, a "three notes chord" is that same figure that gets all its notes played SIMULTANEOUSLY (as implied by the term "chord"). That may seems nitpicky, but it's important to know that these two terms means two different concepts and are not interchangeable.

Actually no, the term chord does not necessarily mean the three notes are played simultaneously. Arpeggios are also considered chords.
@Weloz92
@Weloz92 7 жыл бұрын
You're right. However, my point is that it's not convenient to label every harmonic structure as a chord, because at that point it'll get confusing. So I would try to learn the terms, their definitions and then differentiate the best I can (a triad is a triad, basic chords are built on triads, chords can be played as arpeggios, etc.).

I'm seeing a lot of this... yes the first progression of GDC he played were still triads, but I believe our teacher is trying to say to voice them differently instead of the generic GCD shapes we learn as beginners. He is giving you people very useful information, this is not misleading. Yes, the 'open chords' in the beginning are the exact same chords in the next prgoressions, they're just voiced differently. (Try playing those open chords in a jazz band!!)

A great example of the difference even just a /little/ bit of knowledge about music theory can make. In addition to everything you say, I'd just like to point out that most chords (basic major, minor chords--not thinking about any extended harmony haha) are different combinations of the three notes in your basic triad. This is called tertian harmony and is the basic foundation for pretty much all of Western music. Once you get a good grasp of this, you're no longer confined to "traditional chord shapes," which, as you point out, aren't wrong but I'll assert that they're a little ordinary. Study your theory! It isn't useless!

If I was asked to play that progression, as simple as it is, I would never go for the basic chords. I just think of the order of chords and think of the easiest way to get from one to the other. Some chord positions sound nicer to my ear than others. Triads work well enough, especially when improvising but if you asked for that progression I know I wouldn't go for Triads. I'm from the Punk school of music and like Steve Jones of The Sex Pistols said''I ain't playing no wanky Beatle chords, You get a Major and that's it! :-) Triads are important to learn if you want to understand what makes a chord. They are great for doing add ons to. You can get some nice chords using the Triad as the basic shape.

the lower half of G and C open chords on guitar are in fact triads, and many more of the open chords include the triad somewhere between the 6 strings. I think youre talking about chord inversions not traids. thanks anyway though

He's actually referring to voicings as any major, minor, diminished or augmented chords are triads by definition. An inversion is still a triad it just uses the 3rd or 5th as the bass tone instead of the root. What he should have said is; look how we can create a more unique sound using alternative voicings.

Saltwaterfsh yeah the title is kind of misleading. Also the way you replied made it sound like voicings and inversions are different. Are they different? How so? Ive always assumed they were two words for the same thing

Carl Powell Inversions refer to altered bass notes, usually where we change the bass note to an existing chord tone. Where as a voicing is just a general label for any chord shape in a different position. For example if I were to give you the voicing for D major as: x-5-4-2-3-2 the D is still the base tone, so this is just a voicing of D major. Where as if I were to give you the voicing for D major as (x-9-7-7-7-x) The major 3rd (F#) is now the bass tone or root, meaning we have an inversion. Technically inversions are just voicings too but manipulating the bass tones has a great amount of functionality in composition meaning they are given special importance. A cool trick I sometimes use is to write a bass line first, then try and build the chords around it. Say we're in the Key of D major, and my bass tone at the start of the bar falls on the 5th step (A) rather than playing A major I could play a chord that contains the A note, say F#m and then just use it's inversion: F#m/A. It's a great way of adding variety to a chord progression or for keeping the pulse of a song going.

Saltwaterfsh right okay thanks for that explanation. i do that all the time just never really thought to split the two apart conceptually :)

Chord 'Voicings' are INVERSIONS. You voice a chord with say the third, fifth then tonic or in fist inversion 'standard voicing 1, 3, 5. Inversions and Voicings are interchangeable terms.

Wauw! I literally just discovered your channel right now. And what you just played sounds amazing! I'm still running on the basic chords as you played at first, and I would really like to get something new into my fingers. Can you point me in the direction of a good video for where I am right now?

As a punk musician. When someone tells me a chord progression I instinctually go to power chords or barre chords depending on if I'm using my 7 string or my acoustic
