That whole set “live at Ronnie Scott’s” is amazing. The whole band is awesome.

This is Jeff’s song “Angel” from the album “Who Else!” released in 1999. He is improvising over the song and the chord progression. He also performs this same technique on the song “Blackbird” released on “You Had it Coming” in 2001.
@25dbz-ot9br5 күн бұрын
Yeah. I dunno where dude gets this idea that the keyboard player and JB are jus randomly improvising with some chords. It’s improvising over a progression from a section of the song.

If we all could take even a smidgen of Jeff's talent for new inventive sounds from the guitar. The world would be a better place. He was the master. R.I.P. JB.

Beck's backing band on this is Tal Wilkenfeld on bass, Vinnie Colaiuta on Drums, and Jason Rebello on keys. It might be the best band he's ever worked with in terms of talent.

Wasn't Tal Wilkenfeld about 18 at the time? Absolute genius. The whole video is worth watching for things like her bass solo, JB's reaction and glimpses of Jimmy Page in the audience.

The secret to this is a light touch plus knowing your intonation inside out past the 21st fret - not easy considering how much tighter the frets get up there! This is actually incredibly impressive - his intonation and touch is spot on, and his ears are impeccable!

I gotta say..Jeff Beck was one of my favorite guitar players. He used the guitar like he might use his voice..perfect pitch kinda stuff, sadly I don't have that. Listen to "Where were you"..or "Somewhere over the Rainbow"..listen to how he used the instrument to sound like a voice. Beautiful melody's and playing.

The look on your face @5:36-ish is absolutely priceless! Exactly how I feel when diving into the Beck-iverse. Maybe the progression is something for Rick Beato to nibble into?

I've messed around with open tuning and slide with volume swells. I often get up into those registers during slide solos, but hadn't really thought of doing this. Perfect timing for a new song we're working on.

I bought Blow By Blow when it came out and I was just learning to play guitar and it quickly became my master class trying to figure out how he did this or that (tone, phrasing, technique, etc). Eventually saw him live and wanted to figure out what pedals and such he was using but he was just playing super wide open and it was all in his hands, he could play super clean in a high gain setting, he didn't need to step on a pedal to change the gain. The other thing was he didn't use a pick. Everything he did is just so different from the way we mere mortals play.

I think Bumblefoot does a slightly similar thing with his guitar, except instead of using a slide to play the notes above the frets, he uses a metal thimble on a high-distortion tone. He also tends to do it while tapping and at a high speed, which makes it sound much more chaotic than it does here.
@JamminJim425 күн бұрын
An E-bow can get you similar tones, just not as high as the slide. Very creative on Jeff's part.

Just look at Gary Rossington from Lynyrd Skynyrd and Duane Allman from the Allman brothers. They were doing this for bird sounds in the 60s-70s. Think free bird and Duane’s input on Eric Claptons Layla

@ . Maybe not exactly with a slide, but somehow he makes those “birds” sounds in the middle of Echoes on guitar. you lived under a rock? that technique is normal. i played like that 2 decades ago, and with better technique by pandit battacharya, i got his vhs instructional in the late 90's. the proper way of playing slide is with the tip, like lefthanded writting. what's next? be impressed by stanley jordan who's technique was famous since the middle 80's? or pretend like the reaction to first ever listening to freddie mercury? kmon bro. and by the way it's better using a marble and open tuning (and stereo delay).

When I heard that tune way back in the day it sounded amazing! It was, in my mind, this guy has perfect pitch to play those notes! Everyone has their likes and dislikes, some like metal...etc etc..but what I heard from Jeff Beck was amazing. It was his control over the entire instrument and how he could use a whammy bar, volume knob, and tone controls to make his guitar almost have a "human singer" quality to it..and it was always in tune! He would use the bar to bend a note higher or lower and it was always spot on! I've tried that technique, using the whammy bar, volume knob, etc..never ever matched it! Whether you liked him or not..Jeff Beck was in a league of his own.
