Most people learn to play in standard tuning before the experiment with different tuning. Nothing wrong with learning a different way but it's not going to help your over all understanding of the instrument.
@Seabass203294 жыл бұрын
Hey same! I started playing guitar because I wanted to play Linkin Park songs, so I never tried standard tuning until I'd been playing for half a year. First song I ever learned in standard was Enter Sandman. And yeah if your whole understanding of the instrument is framed around modern rock/metal and single finger bar chords, playing in standard seems way more difficult. 15 year old me wondering why the f the Master of Puppets riff is played in standard lol

I was 17 at the time and loved Pink Floyd, but this album just blew me away! Keeping that drop D going was....challenging to say the least considering my gear: '74 Strat (sunburst, of course) a chorus, distortion, and wah pedal, played through a massive 40 watt Fender Vibrolux Reverb. I still have all this stuff and it all still works! A LOT of yards were mowed, leaves raked, and groceries bagged to buy this stuff, lol!

That always confused me quite a bit. I don't really know why they would tune to Drop D, when Standard D (DGCFAD; Or whole step down from Standard E) makes that concept far easier. Playing inverted power chords in Standard tuning is literally just barring the fret, as if you were to be playing normal powerchords in Drop tuning. Or another way to think of it is just playing exactly how you would play a Drop tuned 7 string, but with the 7th string "cut off."
@Rvezz284 жыл бұрын
@@royalcat10 I agree with you. However, the way I see it is the riffs were the primary concern and the inversions were secondary. That particular song's riff would lose something in standard. So one just became more difficult than the other.

I had played in standard tuning for a while, and I would rate myself as an intermediate working on moving to advanced. Now, I do cover more Tool than any other single band, but just say'n, just because someone is new to playing around with drop D doesn't necessarily mean they're a beginner.

I can see a noob getting lateralis pretty quick (for a noob), the rhythm is the real hard part, and maybe a noobee wouldn't have all those habits to overcome. For me it was that I took a hiatus form playing instruments, and got into tool during that time. I started there covers as soon as I got a bass again it helped with shaking the rust off and getting me better at reading tabs etc. Now If I sat down and played all the tool covers I knew back to back without a break It'd take 2 - 2.5 hours. I keep em in my jam cycle enough now so I don't forget them, but generally just one - four at a time, not all two+ hours (maybe once in a blue moon, I mean I'm already in Drop D right. BD
