Was just coming here to say this. He pushed the whammy bar all the way down, did a big flick with the left hand on the string to get the string really flapping, and then had his finger from the left hand again on the harmonic as the whammy came back up to activate it. You could see him do this, but also he used to have a column in Guitar World magazine, where he described this.

funny thing is that I've always acknowledged how incredible his fretting hand technique was, whether it was intentional or not. Observe how disciplined his wrist pivot and low thumb placement during many of his solos, in particularly legato sections. Not only is that kind of positioning pretty well known and commonly advocated, but due to Dime's fingers seeming to be slightly on the shorter side (like mine as well), it can really aid in maximizing our fingers range, increase our general coverage over the fretboard, as well as maintain a more relaxed and slightly curved position so the fingers can optimally execute fluid legato and huger vibrato! Seriously something I've always noticed in his playing, every time!

I don´t want to be THAT guy, but this may be helpful for some people: When I was learning the Walk Solo I also tried to "poke" the g string, but I figured that it was way easier to do a pull off with your fretting hand on the high a while already holding the a note with your picking hand. This way you don´t have to be that accurate especially when standing up while playing. Great video btw, cheers! RIP Dimebag, one of my all time favourites

Word, Always like me some Dimebag tips. Since I formed/joined my Pantera Tribute (Trendkill Revolution) I had to revisit the catalog and had to the same (analyze his licks/techniques). He busts out allot of symmetrical patterns like Eddie; Eg. CFH solo, Domination diminished run, etc. Every tip bit helps so this is cool, Cheers.

Love the video, just have to add he scooped the high mids and boosted the low mids. So it was not a complete scoop of the mid-range which is why he use additional EQ's with his solid state amps. I personally always loved his tone even though a lot of people say it sounded like garbage. Few tones punch you in the face like his did.

I think he scooped the mids but added them back in somewhere in the loop. Like scooped preamp and then boosted after in a rackmount EQ or something along those lines. But they weren’t just simply scooped and gone. And I remember seeing something where he specifically mentioned it being for the reason of cutting through mix better. Another plus he had was obviously not having to battle another guitar tone on stage. However he did it, he did it excellently. Getcha pull!

If one more person says he scooped the mids, someone's gonna get throat-punched. The randalls he used were voiced like marshalls, which are mid range boosted. DON'T scoop the mids! Leave em at about 10-12 o'clock. Max the gain. Max the treble. Bass at about 10 o'clock. Add an overdrive, max the volume, no gain. As of the technique, the only "real" scale you need is the E blues scale, the rest is pretty much chromatic. Also check out Zakk Wylde. They had a lot of techniques in common.

It wasn’t all chromatic, predominantly it was blues like you say but then he uses the major scale or rather the relative minor, he was a heavy user of the modes of the major scale but avoided the softer sounding modes obviously. In “the sleep” that’s all relative minor as far as I can tell. Blend blues and minor and that gives you a fairly chromatic sound at times

Man, I was lucky enough to live in the area and be able to catch Pantera back in the club days. Some of the best shows ever. They played a club like it was an arena or stadium. Also I had a friend back in early high school (mid ‘80s) loan me a cassette he had made with the first two albums (pre Cowboys of course) to check out. Darrell (Dime) was born a beast. And he was cool to hang with.

He's a great teacher he talks and explains things in a broke down way to the point where he's expressing what you should be feeling while you play not the technical s*** being self-taught that's the only way I know how to be with a guitar. He does sprinkle in the Technics while he's going through it but now I see those how are are just Expressions to the name of the feeling or technique that would otherwise would be impossible to explain without someone showing and literally breaking it down with an explanation you can connect with keep it up dude

ik you’re “advanced” and all but just something to think about, dime and all of these players were once too. they ended up changing the game with no formal teacher books whatever the case. it really is possible if you set your mind to it. use your ears and don’t just trust a video online out of convenience, actually put in the effort yourself if you want to be an actual awesome player rather than just some arbitrary tier level. you will make your own style instead of copying what’s already been done. it’s redundant. better you try to learn and internalize yourself than being spoon fed the rest of your musical journey. best of luck to you in future and get your fingers back on those strings🤘

I have the Dime Distortion pedal, and it has a scoop button for the mids. It does ok as long as it is being pushed by a EQ or a boost pedal, but alone it's just ok. I use it sometimes, especially when I want to attempt a Dime sound. It helps that I have a Dime D100 combo 100watt to play through. Nobody will ever sound like Dime, because his sound was in his fingers bro. We can just honor his sound and his memory. Love your channel man.

4:21 - 'flick the G string'. He did that with a plug off from the fretting (left) hand... not the pick. This allowed him to keep the bar and his right hand around the back of the guitar throughout multiple squeals on different harmonics... Just sayin! :)

Actually, Dime did not use his pick at all for the harmonic squeel. He used his fretting fingers to flick the string, then quickly touching the string with the same finger to get the harmonic. He did not actually pic the first note.

I have also never heard of one story where Dimebag was rude or hateful towards anyone, minorities or not. If he really was what you say he was, there would be stories about it. Do I agree with his use of the flag? No, I'm a minority myself so it's a little awkward. Do I think that you are being really extra when you say he hated minorities? Definitely. Him and brothers were known to have hearts of gold, everyone in the metal community agrees on that, even people outside of the Metal community as well. Edit: I will also say, considering he was a White Trash Texan(Dimebag called himself White trash), he turned out as good as you can hope if you ask me.

I’m not sure if he clarifies here, but when he refers to a blues scale in third position, that scale is called “Box III.” There are five box scales within the pentatonic realm. Thus, five blue scales. Box one is the pentatonic scale, that we all use for the most part-the one he demonstrated. But if you haven’t, learn them all, that will open up so many creative doors for you. Sorry if that was obvious, just thought I would throw that in. I had a great guitar teacher when I was a kid. I want to drop a comment on something you didn't mention about Pantera's albums that I believe it's also one of the reasons why it makes us feel Pantera so unique and powerful , that is, the drums, bass, vocals and solo guitar are most of the times on the centre while the the guitar riffs are spread surgically on the stereo field, and that's why I think it makes it so huge. In Vulgar Display of Power, "A New Level", "Walk", "Fucking Hostile" and "Rise" are such monumental tunes, that in my opinion is also due to this mixing technique. Love your channel keep it up :)

You didnt mention one of his biggest traits. His legato. I remember an interview where he says something along the lines of. "for every one note i pick i hit about 10 notes with my fingers". He wasnt a right hand shredder when it came to solos. His left hand did most of work. He had fast, accurate fingers while his right hand just did minimal picking and worked the bar

I have to correct tyler at the Dimebag Divebomb Technice. It's not 1 Pick Attack for the Divebomb it's 0 Pick Attack because dime Flick the String he wants to activate harmonic on and Bring the Whammy Bar down and when he activate the Harmonic he brings the Whammy Bar up. So he don't even pick in the beginning of the Divebomb he just flicks the g string or what ever like a pull of and the he activates the Harmonic
