It's truly amazing how far "Beginner's"/"Starter Instruments" have moved compared to when I got my first No-Name Precision copy for Xmas of 1989 - it was nearly unplayable, and the "Upgrade Market" of parts was pretty much restricted to pickups - Tuners, Bridges & the like was a fraction of what is available now. When I moved up to a '92 Japanese-made Ibanez SR-800 with its "thinner than a J-Bass" Neck, super-lightweight Basswood Body and 2-band Active Preamp, it was a revelation and what I could *physically* play took a major jump forward (most of the time it's the Player, but occasionally it CAN be the gear holding one back). The JP-50 certainly has "the core" of JP's Music Man tone, and I imagine the fairly inexpensive and easy upgrade to any number of Pickup combinations he's used (DiMarzio Air Norton & Steve's Special, CrunchLab & LiquiFire, or Illuminator depending on what "era" of Petrucci's tone you'd like to go for) would be a large boost tone-wise. However, I just want to make a factual correction to info posted on-screen numerous times. Petrucci's middle selection on his Pickup Selector is *not* a "Coil Tap", which is the process of taking a "tap" off the windings of a pickup midway or at some point before the winding is completed. This gives you the option of taking a less-wound and thus less gain and "hot" selection from a pickup, which can be very useful in getting a more "vintage" tone if the pickups will be wound hot and modern with a large amount of gain to them. Petrucci's (and most Pickup Options out there by large manufacturers) are "Coil Split" (also known as "Coil Cut"), which is the process of splitting the dual coils that make up a Humbucker Pickup which can give you the ability of getting "Single Coil"' tones from Humbuckers. In JP's specific case, he has the middle selection of his Switch wired to take the two "Inside Coils" from both the Neck & Bridge Pickups wired in Parallel (as opposed to most Middle Positions which simple sum both Pickups together in Series), which create a mild mid-scoop but also give a very clean & also "acoustic" tone which he used for recreating acoustic parts on albums before he had guitars set up with Piezo Pickups upon becoming an Music Man Endorsee in 2000. And now you know... and knowing is half the battle! (tm cheesy 1980's G.I. Joe safety tips ;-)

Great vid, my fave is the JPXI but I can't stand how flat the neck radius is on it. The Majesty has a VERY unique sound to it, it doesn't sound like any other JP guitar at all IMHO...Can I ask a q? I know the Majesty comes with the "Game Changer" system -- with that, can you program the push/pull coil tap button to actually work in all three switch positions? That would be ideal -- So for Position 1 with the tap on, I'd have it be the bridge outside coil, Pos 2 I'd have it be bridge and neck two inner coils, and Pos 3 I'd have it be Neck sweet spot coil. I am under the impression though that no matter what you do, the "tap" switch only works in the middle pickup position. Thanks.

JPxi was and still is my favorite model over all. the majesty is cool and plays like a dream, im just not as fond of the look as with the look and i really like the forearm scoop on the jpxi. . the JP60 is a great guitar feel wise, its still a $650 guitar but it is a bit lacking in the pickups compared as is expected with the 2 grand price difference. its mainly cheaper because it has less hardware and the hardware it does have is of a slightly lower quality. not that you could tell when compared to another brand.
@rodrigozamo7 жыл бұрын
I used to have a JPX which is very similar to the XI, same wood combination, shape but I regretted buying it. I always liked the original JP6 better and this model confirms it for me, even if it's the sterling version it sounds richer and more balanced to me. I can also say that acoustically the basswood sounds better, the alder on the jpx and jpxi is a bit dark in the sense that it absorbs so much of the sound and it's not that loud, and that translates that the pickups are the ones doing the heavy work in bringing out the general tone. It still sounds great but I would buy an original JP6 next over the XI, plus the mystic dream finish is such a beauty that wasn't available in the BFR series. The majesty, I haven't tried it personally so I don't have a good comparison point, but based on this video, it's a clear second, but the first generation model is still a winner for me, and I'm sorry to all the fans of the majesty but I just don't like the way it looks, the more I try to dig it, I just can't. I bet it must feel and sound fantastic but the looks just kill it for me.

The majesty has a clean tone more clean than the others sterlings, and more definition on power achords with distortion, but it is less agressive on riffs in low notes because the tone is much more treble. Its a matter of taste. If you want to play heavy things, sterling jp50 is a good choice. If you want clean sounds more clear, solos with more treble and full of definition buy majesty. If you have money dont thing, buy all!

It would probably sound closer if the JP50 had the same pickups (which are fairly inexpensive). That's what i'm thinking. Buying a full on Music Man Majesty (or any Ernie Ball to be fair) is WAY out of my budget. I Think the difference between the JP50 and the others is that it has the pick ups mounted directly on the basswood body and the other ones have a mahogany tone block (the JPXI has a alder body instead of the basswood) that makes the sound more "creamy". I have a JP 100, GREAT guitar btw. But I'm planning on getting a JP-12 next year (a really hard thing to do, living in Brazil)
7 жыл бұрын
And for those who want a JP guitar and don't wanna loose the "piezo" pickup and want a more "open" sound like the JP50, the JP6 (first model) is the one for you, it has the pickups mounted directly on the basswood body with no maple top or mahogany tone block.

Honestly the Jp50 isn't that far behind in sound even with its own humbuckers. It even sounds bigger in some points. What doesn't sound at all good to me is some weird high end in all the sounds. His amazing technique? Gorgeous fractal simulation? Or is Sterling good enough to my ear? 왜 제 귀에는 다 동일하게 들릴까요
@alexcampbell311 Жыл бұрын
A large part of the sound comes from the fingers of the player, and the amp is probably configured with the same settings for each guitar. The Sterling by Music Man JP50 is modeled to sound like a more affordable version of the Ernie Ball Music Man JP6, and thus will sound similar to the two Ernie Balls. If you don't know what you're listening for then it will all sound VERY similar, but if you have good enough headphones or speakers you will hear more articulation of each individual note on the Ernie Ball guitars than on the Sterling guitar. The third last riff, the Count of Tuscany, is good for this since there's a massive amount of distortion and there are multiple string chords mixed in with open E string palm muting. Hopefully this helps!
