Very cool. Last year, I bought a couple of cheap recording consoles, in unknown condition (which was why they were cheap :) ), and they had motorized faders so you have given me inspiration to start work on something similar to this. I have learnt so much from your videos so that I might try this myself. Thank you for sharing. :)

Incredible! When you switch tracks, presumably the computer outputs the value of the fader - does the Arduino request this value? And does it come as a CC value?

Great video and controllerI like that all the buttons are illuminated, which makes it better for darker studios. More daw control surfaces should incorporate this. The behringer x touch controller would be even better. I asked Behringer if they could do this for the x touch and they said unfortunately it’s a hardware not firmware issue. The led colors are fixed.

As I already sprang for motorized fader, I am more curious if this could be used to build out a set of rotaries. Say you want a rack mount to control all the delays in your DAW. Imagine a dedicate rack unit (or box) with all the typical dials all labeled. It didn’t matter which delay you selected. All the dials controlled what they were supposed to. LEDs around the encoder show where the dial is set and update as you change programs/presets. There is some special signal (different color or something) that shows if a specific knob doesn’t exist/work for this particular delay sim. Now repeat for chorus, boost, and so on.

“Something that is impossible with with regular faders and rotary potentiometers” this is only partially true, and I’m splitting hairs a bit but I think it’s important: rotary encoders make this very possible, and I know they aren’t pots, but you can get the same effect and people conflate pots with knobs a lot. Also, you can get a similar (but janky) effect if you use relative instead of absolute motion in your programming
@excrubulent
@excrubulent 7 ай бұрын
In fact there is a motorised encoder that could do all of this. Look up the SmartKnob project. I'm building one myself soon. I think this MIDI controller project would be a great way to use it. For a similar idea, you could go with a hall effect rotary encoder that would be smooth and continuous and rotate without limit. If you tuned the mechanism and added drag lube, you could make it feel just like a pot but without the endstops.
@threepe0
@threepe0 7 ай бұрын
@@excrubulent the motors for that have been mostly out of stock for years, and some other projects have improved upon some of the design aspects of that project also. I was really interested and hoping to build one when I saw the original video though. I just use a surface dial connected to a Pi now, separate display showing what parameter and value Im currently on, and relative motion instead of absolute (display gives me absolute positioning anyways.)
@excrubulent
@excrubulent 7 ай бұрын
@@threepe0 Gotcha, well the good news is you actually can get the motors. I know that because I got one a few weeks ago, just looked it up it's DigiKey part no. ROB-20441. EDIT: Sparkfun also sells them under 20441. A little pricey but as a main feature of a custom MIDI controller I think it's worth it. I know stock was an issue but I think DigiKey was persuaded to make them available again due to demand from that project. Do you know what other projects have improved on it? I'd be interested to look them up and see which one I want to try.
@excrubulent
@excrubulent 7 ай бұрын
@@threepe0 Ugh, I think my comment was eaten for telling you where to get a particular part. Can't have people being helpful or anything in a youtube comment. Anyway, the brushless motor part number is ROB-20441 and they made it available thanks to the SmartKnob project. Do you have information about what other projects improved on it? I can't find any information about them.

Parabéns pelo projeto ai meu mano!

This is really dope. So close to what I was looking to build. Hopefully I can adjust the code for 8 faders, 8 encoders and each has their own solo mute and record. Do you think you could have 16 tracks or would I need to make a second one minus the transport section?

The Mackie Protocol only works with 8 tracks. So, you need 2 controllers, and the second you can choose a different option in the control surface option to be recognized as the 8-16 tracks controller.

@erock.steady
@erock.steady Жыл бұрын
it's a midi device, does lightroom support midi? if not, i'd be shocked if there isn't proven software available to handle translation between hardware platforms. for instance, midi can be used to control lightshows. as well, midi controllers can be configured as tactile controls for flight simulators, etc. at the very least, the project is open-source so in extreme cases the software bridge can be coded from scratch.
@Nightsbringer1
@Nightsbringer1 Жыл бұрын
@@erock.steady so natively, Lightroom doesn't support midi but it doesn't really support much. There are midi controllers like the loupdeck that cost hundreds each with proprietary software. There is, however, the open source solution "MIDI2LR" which allows you to map midi inputs to lightroom functions. I'd have to poke about in its code/release notes to figure it out!
