Why I’m missing these posts, lol. He is a musical genius indeed. I believe developing a musical ear comes from starting to learn music from an early age and including , listening I haven’t played the piano for decades and now I forget I have a piano coz I’m busy working all day. The song is clearly a variation on Chick Corea’s “Spain”, (Chick-S-Pain), a well known jazz standard for decades, and one that Larnell has probably played a few hundred times - not taking anything away from his genius. Non-jazzers may not be familiar with this background.

I think the point of this video is not his years of experience playing music with all kinds of people as you say, but the incredible gift of memory he has that after hearing this piece just once, he's able to play it nearly perfectly. Maybe you should try it with one of those keyboardless fusion tracks and see if all of your years of experience is what pulls this off, or is it something more that most of us "musicians" just don't have.

It's an interesting discussion, nature vs. nurture. I'm going to do some episodes on this but, in short, here's my take. I have perfect pitch or whatever people want to call it (nothing about me is perfect!). As a kid, I could pick out songs by ear and play them easily on the piano. I know, for me, there is no possible way my ear would have grown as much as it has over the years without countless hours of continuing to stretch my ears by learning more and more difficult songs, jazz solos and chord progressions completely by ear. And, as a jazz musician, the time spent in rehearsals and gigs listening and responding in real time helped grow the ears too. It is for sure nature Kevin, but I believe that nurture plays an even bigger role - for Larnell and anyone else born with a gift for music.

But again this video is not about his musical ability which is phenomenal but about the fact that he can recall from just one listening an entire song and play it back perfectly. I don't know about you but I have to listen to a song 20 times 30 times before I can play it perfectly.

@@MusicShed It's all they do. A full time job for anyone at that pro level. In music the saying is "Miss a day of practice, you know it. Miss 2 days of practice, your audience knows it". Think Tiger Woods and even Michael Jordan after leaving the NBA for the MLB. Both took about a year off and had a very difficult time coming back. Took about a year for each to get back up to par, no pun intended!.

Texas high school marching band competitions are a much bigger deal than I ever would have thought before I was involved. Part of what they compete in is the whole band goes into a room with judges and are givin a piece of music composed for the event and thus totally unknown to the director and the band. They get 3 minutes to review the music, then they play it ... the whole band, together. I didn't think it was possible, but I've seen it done amazingly well dozens of times now ... and to be clear, some of these kids are just 14 years old and these are public school bands not special music schools. The fact that a seasoned professional can work musical magic is still impressive but it's no longer the miracle it once was to me :).

In regard to comparing drummers skill levels, well that is just stupid. No one is better because it’s impossible to measure, what is the standard based on? Larnell would school Chris in a fusion setting and Chris would school Larnell in a metal setting. The comparison of drummers has gotten so outta hand. I could easily say that none of the top fusion drummers are on the same level as Steve Jordan at having a deep pocket and groove. At the end of the day, they’re all drummers being the best at what they do.

Harley, I love your enthusiasm and I challenge you. What does that mean? Many say that someone is “the best”, so I’m only challenging you cause you happened to come up at the moment and it’s been on my mind. When musicians are at this level, why do they need to be “the best?” Can it just be that his playing moves us more than another drummer who is in this league? I love your focus on repetitions in the production of a specialist in anything. I’m a sign painter and it’s a trade that requires thousands of hours of repetition to even lay down a letter that looks half way decent. And people only ever see the outcome and say “ wow I wish I could do something like that”....not knowing that I spend 7 hours a day painting and haven’t missed a day in 5 years and 47 days. Think about the greats you look up to, the one thing in common is that 20000 hours they put in. All the stories of future Super Bowl winners talking about the hundred passes they had to make before they could eat dinner or being in the basketball gym when everyone has went home. That’s what it takes. Repetition is the only thing I’ve ever found that is “ sacred” to me, I look at it as my religion.

I agree with you. To perfect your craft you have to practice over and over and over again. Many hours of hard work but think about this for a minute: The Olympics. The worlds greatest athletes from all over the world come together to compete. ALL have spent thousands of hours practicing their sport almost every single day, but in the end there are only 3 winners, and one of these great athletes will finish last in every event. The difference is God given natural talent and Larnell is just one of those very special people.

And I agree with your point that when everyone is a specialist, it’s talent that separates the 4th place from 1st. When you clump all Olympic athletes together they seem pretty regular, but you look at it from the perspective of the average person and “competing in the olympics” is more than some people could dream of so they are still successful in a way and it was still attributed to repetition. Basically, if you want to get to the table, you have to put in the hours like everyone else, THEN we will see what really makes you unique.

It’s more about the level your at and how it directly translates to time you put in. Even if your competing with people with like a company, the market is big enough that if your willing to put in the work, success is out there waiting. But yea, your right that in sports even with all that there is no guarantee of success.

I always say practice right, practice smart and avoid bad habits because if you just practice something you'll never be really good at something perhaps that you would like more For example myself I've always wanted to be able to hear songs and be able to transcribe and arrange and compose music and I'll tell you the time that I had practice with a piano teacher and soley reading sheetmusic didn't exactly allow me to do the things I mentioned that I really wanted to do. So I'm back at square one still wanting to arrange compose and transcribe and all thats left is to work on it. But how and what do I practice is hard. So practice is smart but you have to constantly practice to solidify and improve and learn more
