Lmfao great reaction, would love to see more. Listening to Dance Gavin Dance for me took some practice and has, imo, made me at all competent at hearing musical intricacies in other music. Their song structure is always different with some exceptions and their unclean vocalist normally doesn't want his lyrics to be taken too seriously. This is actually one of the simple structures for their songs so if youre interested in hearing more be prepared for more confusion/mind blowing lol.

So the genre has been become to be known as Swancore named after this bands Guitarist Will Swan. Its a sub-sub-genre of post hardcore that has a mix of pop singing mixed with occasional screaming and elements of math rock, key changes, unusual timing signatures and occasional timing changes. They typically do the general pop structures with verse, pre-chorus, chorus or verse, chorus, bridge with slight variations to kinda keep it interesting. The clean Vocalist is Tillian, hes the 3rd vocalist in the band (the other 2 split off to start other bands with a variation of this style) and Jon the harsh vocalist (guy outside the plane/flight attendant

Hi! I found this video through the other DGD reaction videos I’ve watched, and I like that you’re able to comment more on musical structure. I wanted to let you know that 99% of their songs, maybe all of them, are written music first, lyrics second. The instruments are set down and then sent to the two vocalists (Tilian (cleans) and Jon (dirties)), and they form the harmonies and melodies around the music. That’s why a lot of Jon’s screams will syncopate with the guitar and why Tilian’s harmonies seem to weave around the music. I thought that might be helpful info for future reactions! Take care!

Absolutely enjoyed your reaction! Have been a DGD fan for many many years, and have seen many different reactions to first listens.... I'm happy to have shared yours, with you, and hope you listen to more! They are a remarkable band with an incredibly convoluted history, an avid fan base, and GREAT MUSIC! Please expose yourself to a few more of their tracks, and let us share in your journey! (You're quite funny, too!)

I loved this reaction XD I wouldn't get too caught up in trying to figure out the meaning or structure, most of DGD's songs switch up rhythm a lot and it's hard to predict the upcoming "sections" when listening for the first time. Tilian Pearson (the clean singer), is where most of the meaning of the song comes from, if at all. Jon Mess (the "Messy" vocalist, if you will), usually spews random lyrics that are mostly for getting a kick out of. One perfect example is this is a song from them called Count Bassy. I won't leave any spoilers, but if you listen to it while reviewing the lyrics, you'll see what I mean. Think of Tilian as being the 'sense' and Jon as being the 'nonsense'. {The also applies for the previous clean singers of the band, except for "Happiness" where Will Swam (Guitarist) replaces Jon Mess.}

"Was there a guy outside the window?" That's just Jon Mess. He's apparently some sort of deity or something? We still have yet to figure that out- but everyone (including the band members) just lets him do whatever he wants. The important thing is that he wants you to matter to you. I don't know about you, but that makes me feel really good about myself.

Lyrically, that’s about as cohesive as DGD gets. The “screamer” Jon Mess generally writes his lyrics very abstract, often seemingly having no connection to the rest of the song lyrics. It’s inherently confusing, but in a good way imo.

Thats what that was BUT probably not the best song to react to DGD for the first time tho Check out "Inpsire the Liars" (you'll be confused about the video too but that one is about Tilians dad and scientology. Check out "Deception" and "Philosopher King" to hear different styles from Tilian.

If you enjoy being thrown-off with expectations in songs and not knowing where things are going to go- I have 3 band recommendations for you: 1. A Lot Like Birds Two of their albums (Conversation Piece, and No Place) even feature one of the old clean vocalists from Dance Gavin Dance, Kurt Travis. And the album No Place is a concept album. 2. The Fall of Troy This is an older 3-piece band that was one of the staples of math rock. They had a large influence on a lot of other post-hardcore bands that came after them. 3. Maximum the Hormone This is a japanese rock band. Describing them does no justice to their work- they are an experience. To be brief, people call them a mix of System Of A Down, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tool, death metal, and Japanese pop. Every member sings. The drummer is a girl. My recommendation for entry-points are their songs Yoshu Fukushu, What's Up, People?!, or Bu-ikikaesu!!.

Best advice right here. The music videos dont follow the lyrics, theyre their own self contained stories and almost every music video has some reference to a past one, so dont get to caught up about understanding whats happening in the videos unless you wanna watch all of them and piece together all the references yourself. Which is a lot of fun in its own right. The song lyrics have their own meaning that you can always see if its on genius.
@CARLandGINNIE

Their videos are usually only tangentially related to the song. If it helps, think of the clean vocals as the main story of a play and the dirty vocals as the greek chorus.

Great reaction, just a forewarning for other songs you got like a 10% chance any of the lyrics mean anything. They usually just sing non sense really really well, and even if the song does mean something, usually the video doesn't lol.

"im not following the structure. I'm confused" (not even 60 seconds in) maybe listen to the song and let it play and unfold instead of stopping it every 10 seconds? Like just let it play for a bit jfc. I wouldn't try to understand ANY song (let alone a DGD song) for the first time by stopping it every few seconds. I get its a reaction/commentary vid but c'mon dude....

That used to annoy me so much too when I’d watch others do the same😆 then I realised the motivation for me watching was not to hear an analysis/opinion, but to just listen to the song in another way and fulfil my confirmation bias. This is a trap many viewers fall into when watching “reaction” videos without knowing it. I’ve been there as a viewer and 100% understand where you’re coming from. It’s frustrating.
