I invented this smart tempo idea many years ago in my mind, logic beat me to it😛 Playing in a band with very long, stripped down, and slow drum cadence, it was difficult for guitar and bass overdubs without a metronome, but playing drums to a metronome effected the vibe and feel. So I dreamed of this possibility, to play free form without a click, and have a grid retrofitted that could map tempo shifts and push/pull. So cool to see that it exists!

I experimented with free tempo/audio recording when it first came out & had so many issues but it was ages ago & I'm unable to explain them! This has possibly shown me where I was going wrong - so thanks!

Thank you for this interesting video. Midi seems to be very fine, Audio obviously not that easy. I never used this so far. But I’m at least informed now about possibility. But I often wondered/think about how recording live in the studio (e. g. A brass band) without klick is being treated after the recording. Do those engineers never use a Klick when mixing?

What I want to learn is how when sharing audio files how to work with tempo maps, importing the file correctly, lining it up with the down beat, etc. Sometimes things go crazy and I can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong! 🤪 Focussing on audio file sharing seems super important in our world of collaborating online successfully. Thanks!

You are right, it is not always apparent what is going on with a file's tempo. I found it best to experiment around with any audio file. Import it, create your own tempo map, delete it etc. Deleting a tempo map and creating your own from scratch tells you a lot about how logic deals with tempo maps imo

Around the 13:35 mark, you have a bad edit on your VO where you say "you can use drummer" twice. Thanks for the info! Great series.

Smart tempo / free tempo recording is great for rhythmic recordings, but i'll still play in my own click track and beat map it for slow jazz or classical pieces. i have yet to try out the newest Smart Tempo features, but "set downbeat hint" is hopefully exactly what Smart Tempo always needed.

Until now for slow ballads or classical I could not find any solution. I tried free tempo but it does not work you need to play with some kind of rithmich 🤷🏻♀️

Interesting video, thank, you. As we speak tempo (tempi?) do you plan to explain how to control it with a MIDI CC? it's very usefull when you want to humanize something afterward, change the tempo accordingly to the music flow, like the kind of respiration a conductor can give to an orchestra.

Heres a tough one I think: Say I have a project, whose tempo is 240bpm, but I have a rhythm guitar software instrument that now plays obviously dbl time guitar parts, which I don't want. Is there a way for that one track, with the software instrument to play/perform as if the project was half the speed??

In the video I think you said you were planning to make a video all about Smart Tempo (for 10.7/10.8?) further down the track - I've looked for it but can't seem to find it. Before I drive myself mad looking - does this exist yet?

So I really do need to upgrade my Mac OS so I can download these newer versions of logic. I’m still using 10.6.? 😢

Hello - thanks so much for the video - can free time recording functionality be applied retrospectively? i.e. If I have recorded a midi piano part in free time without using the free time record button can iI still access and apply the four tempo options? i have a project recorded free time in logic 10.7.4 and wondered if I can update to 10.7.5 and use this feature for an older project.

Not that I'm aware of. I believe you can only use that dialog directly after making a MIDI recording.

Hey Josh, I just tried a Free Tempo recording. It seemed to determine a tempo of 124 - but it was a straight line across at 124! And the popup window did not appear. Does that mean I played a constant 124 Tempo? Gianni♥
@MusicTechHelpGuy Жыл бұрын
What version of Logic are you using? You might be pressing the 'capture record' button if you're in 10.7.4 or earlier. You might have also hit the "Don't show again" option, so it's just using your last setting, which is probably not the "apply region tempo to project" option. You can reset this by going to "Logic Pro > General > Notifications". The click reset all warnings. The dialog should pop up again.

@@MusicTechHelpGuy Hey Josh, I'm on the latest version of Logic (10.7.7). I don't recall pressing "Don't show This Again" (I rarely do that with any app) But I was more interested in the straight line of 124 tempo; that I played it all the way through without varying speed. I figured that was why the box didn't pop up. So, thanks a million and see you in the next video! Gianni

I learned so much from your videos. Would you please consider doing a new tutorial on beat/tempo mapping? I've gotten stuck on a couple of projects like this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aISTpnx3pJ1nrKM Thanks!
