I had a (non-foolproof) way to find the key “by ear” when I was a beginner...it does have some flaws. I would play through the order of sharps and whichever one sounded “wrong” I would then have a starting point to check which major scale I could play on the song. A the time I had been lucky enough to not find a song with flats- but the same trick would have worked. Also I wasn’t listening to a lot of music that used other types of scales. If the song changes key you would have to repeat the steps again to see which key it changed to.

Sidenote: another potentially complicating matter (besides modes) is when the song changes key half way through, like in the chorus. For ex., look at the song "Don't speak" from the band No Doubt.The song is in Eb, but the chorus is in Ab.

Close. The verse is in Cm, the chorus in Fm.

Sweet Home Alabama is D myxi? OK. There is a lot of debate about this. On the surface it starts on D and has a Cmaj so that would be the obvious conclusion but: 1. The into goes D-C-G-mysterious fill that is not really a G or D arpeggio (and I believe has a C# in it) 2. The verse goes D-C-G-mysterious fill that is basically a G arpeggio 2. The chorus goes D-C-G-mysterious fill that is sort of a G arpeggio leading to a emphasized C but only on the 4-and. 3. The guy that wrote the song and played the main solos played them centered on G I believe. Which taken together makes is somewhat ambiguous it might be argued. Secondly, I would be very interested in your opinion of Hack Music Theory's rules of thumb for identifying key/mode/tonal center: 1. The key/tonal center will usually be the chord the song starts with unless...... 2. .....another chord is played for a longer period on time in the progression, or....... 3. .....another chord is repeated more times than any other chord in the progression

Great video. I'm curious to the description of Sweet Home Alabama being in D Mixolydian. This would mean the progression is I VII V I rather than it being a V IV I V in G major. It would be very interested in an explanation. Is it the key to this more in the chord progression of the verse (which I cannot recall off the top of my head)?

Ears are in fact a musicians most important tool. So any ear training whatsoever is welcome. Perhaps it's just a British and American thing, but we use a capital "M" for Major chords and a lower case "m" for minor chords (CM = C Major, and Cm = C minor). I only mention it because it could cause some confusion. Regardless thanks again for the excellent lesson. ^-^

I want mean too that the academic theory is secondary... Certainly it help a author in some difficult musical controversial meaning... In some way is a original author able to create theory.. To study theory is mainly fundamental for a musicist, not for an author. I'm a typical example... as author i think to be between the best in creations, and i ever got none lesson of theory, with nobody had never to teach me, even i read none musical book (i had education as technic). All my compositions born by my musical emotivate transcended sensibility, and then trascripted by mine own ears (i even might have suggestion by my dreams, and dreams don't follow suggestion by any theorie). Another example is that this teacher (he is a italian.. as me also... i praise his knowing), in a some other preceding video he treated theory on sequence chords : C - Am - Am7 - G ... (score: A,B,C,D,E G,A,G)... well.. he treated just harmony for use in one of my awesome composition ("Concerto for Guitar", in a progressive-rock/pop-in-classical-symphony) that i had to write even 30ys long time ago. However i want say that an author ought not to have in very primary consideration the musical theory, but at first that his own natural felt emotive inspiration ! After, we may left do to the theorical criticists those own comments and analysis by academics as professionists ! Theory is a "while'.. All born and finish by the "ear" (if he had to perform in theory, i had not to have written (whatever in full MIDI computerizing scores) my 400 melodies by "ear", that i consider those to be between best in harmonical music)! (motation X(M) or X(m) is coventional anywhere, but X(M) may be signed as X simple)

What about songs like, "O Ye Como Va" -Tito Puente/Santana, "Use Me"- Bill Withers, and "Chameleon"- Herbie Hancock? Are they ii V in a major key? Or are they i IV Dorian? I know this may sound pedantic, as both scales are the same only beginning on different degrees. So many people get confused as to what key they're in. If you look at the first chord played ad the i, it would imply Dorian. But there are so many people (largely people who play harmonica) that can't play on those as they can't find the right key. I know this is a guitar-centric channel, but as a guitarist, how do I get them to play on the right key?
@FLIPPITYFLOOP5 жыл бұрын
Also isn't the 2nd chord of Sweet Home Alabama Cadd9? Unless my memory's tricking me. If it is, then that makes the D mixolydian even more apparent, since you have that direct clash between the C and D notes in the same chord.

If you don't have an out of key chord in the song, then there is an even easier way to find the key. If you have 2 major chords that are only 1 step apart as in the C and D in this video, then you're key will be 2 and a half steps higher than the higher of the two major chords. In this case, 2 1/2 steps above the D. 5 frets on a guitar or 5 keys(white or black)on a piano.

@sarahrosen92725 жыл бұрын
It's too late for *absolute* perfect pitch, but if you can recognize just one or two notes you can "do the math" of transposing. The point is that You can hear what chords are playing and relate them to an instrument: your voice. It's all about ear training. Can you hear what a major chord sounds like? A minor chord? A diminished chord? Great! Now you know your diatonic harmony for a major key, (Major, minor, minor, major, major, minor, diminished). If you hear two major chords with the root a whole step apart, there's a really good chance you've found the subdominant (IV) and dominant (V) and your good music sense will resolve that right back to your root (I). If that root isn't working, you might be in a mode. Remember that Aolean mode is the relative minor of Ionian mode, making that minor (vi) the minor (i) and that diminished chord its no longer the (vii°), its the (ii°) If this is new to you, watch the older videos on this channel. They're awesome. Trust your ear. You'll get it.
