I think over gives a more truer sound, as the rear position makes any guitar sound tinny. I know this was about bracing, but I just thought I'd chime in on this. Hey, today is my Monday ;)

Body shape plays a big role too as Gibson proved with the Advanced Jumbo. It’s forward shifted, scalloped, and has basically the same bracing as a 1936 model. Somehow the round shoulder of the Gibson maintains the punchy treble and a tighter bass while at the same time having monster volume. They are actually louder than most D28s but have a tighter sound. I had both a HD28V and AJ to play side by side and compare. I loved them both. Both VERY loud guitars with tons of bluegrassin’ power! However despite the forward shift, rosewood, and long scale of the AJ it was a more focused loud guitar. The Martin was a powerful cannon and the Gibson was more of a high powered rifle with great tonal precision. The AJ was a bit louder too if you just banged on them to see who was louder. After a few months I decided to keep the Gibson AJ...one being they are so rare to see or even hear about. Most have no clue Gibson made a loud booming guitar to compete with the D28 back in 1936-37. Sadly Gibson stopped production of the AJ unless it’s a special run model. However I can’t wait to try a new HD28 with the new forward shifted bracing. I loved the HD28V I had but never could bond with the V neck. Now I can have a awesome Martin with the original pre war style bracing without the damn V neck and have my Advanced Jumbo to compliment it :). HD28 and a AJ together what more could a man wish for !

Watched the right hand (strum) to see where it hit, and it was identical for each guitar. Nice job. Because, if you move the pick back towards the bridge, the 'brighter" it'll get (and the opposite if you move forward with the pick). I think where this guy strums the guitar could be called the 'sweet spot'. That's where the best tones will present themselves. You can tell this guy has played a while. Interesting video. Thanks for making it.

Guys a couple of issues . Are you using the same brand,and same gauge strings ? That’s a big deal. Forward shifting has the cross of scalloped bracing about 1 inch from sound hole. Standard bracing are about 2 inches from sound hole. Backward shifting is close to 4.5 inches from sound hole. The forward shifting gives the bulk of the dread nut body a lot of open space,and the bass is really upfront because of this. Great if you want a loud projecting rhythm instrument . Standard is a great hybrid well balanced . Back shifted is very good for really hitting the attack hard. - bluegrass - Ps. I was surprised to see a forward braced D 18 . Are they stock production ?

Do each of the bracing styles have any positive or negative effects of a Guitar's stability and longevity (example: the dreaded acoustical guitar "belly" effect at the back of the bridge found after string tension has worked on the guitar over time)?
@TheSilence16 жыл бұрын
The rear shifted guitars are the least likely to develop problems with the top. The forward shifted guitars are the most likely to develop problems. The standard guitars are middle of the road.
@el34glo592 жыл бұрын
You're gonna get answers like FS causes more issues with too, but etc. Not true. Rear braced guitars actually have more instances of bracing coming loose than any other style. People don't know that because they focus on the belly. No matter what bracing position, scalloped bracing will give you a belly. Rear braced, it will be more concentrated right behind the tbe bridge and cause dimples in the top at times because of that. Forward shifted will cashew a more gradual belly across the back. Which is actually better imo

@JohnnyRebKy6 жыл бұрын
reverendmississippi they did it because that’s what the original Martins had in the 1930s that made Martin so loved. There were no amps back then so volume had to be achieved naturally. Problem was guys started putting huge strings on them and structure problems began to arise. That’s the only reason forward shift went away back then. Today medium strings are the largest for a acoustic guitar and forward shifted bracing can handle mediums just fine. It’s a return to the sound and design that made the D28 for example the standard all other guitars are held to. Old 1930s Martins cost A LOT of money because of age AND the sound they produced from that original forward shifted bracing. Now Martin is giving us new guitars that are braced like the originals that sound so fantastic!! A few years ago you had to spend a lot more money to get a forward shifted D28 by buying the HD28V which was almost 4 thousand bucks. Now we can get a HD28 for a lot less and enjoy that 1930s style bracing. It’s a win win :)
