For the last caller, he needs to be asked if he thinks the other candidates passed the test? He’s making the assumption that passing the tests means an automatic selection. For decades there were (and still are) are women and minorities who pass the tests and didn’t get the job in organizations even though they were the best for the job because there was a man who passed with lower scores and were selected. Understanding the importance of diversity in places like the Met does require a little bit more imagination than I think that last gentleman was willing to use (which leads me to believe maybe they dodged a bullet in turning him down). If your workforce is all 1 category of people then people from other categories are going to be dissuaded from aspiring to that role even if they are actually the best person for that role. It's a bit of ham-fistedness in the short term and yeah, it doesn't feel fair at all to be on the recieving end of it, but the goal is the long term benefit of a wider recruitment pool (on top of the fact that it stands to reason that a police service should be somewhat representative of those it's policing). This isn't luvvie duvvie "let's have all the colours and forget the white blokes", it's just sensible business.
