On Friday it was reported that Musk will no longer be providing the essential Starlink internet service to Ukraine for free, which means that (unless the Pentagon decides to foot the bill) that’s the end of StarLink for the Ukrainians.

@@user-hj8rn5wp8z There is a long process between recording a video and it being shown to viewers. first, there is video editing/soundcheck/doublechecking of sources etc. then there is the actual upload (which can take a long time depending on the computer and the internet connection) and finally youtube does a check to see if content is appropriate for viewers (so no terrorists are uploading videos etc) and monetizable. In general the last step is at least 24 hours from what I heard. in other words you are basically stating don't do news. most news doesn't change that much in 24 hours unless it is a fast moving event.

beau of the 5th column pointed out that the defense industry has a long memory and takes a dim view of the games he played. not in a military campaign. besides some comments in ft claim that those services are paid for by Ukrainians. They buy terminals etc. musk has signed himself for a lot of enmity. the dod will find or fund a replacement for starlink. Also the power of Musk as you mention has historical precedent. Think 30 years war or most of European history precedent. You know the devastations visited upon Europe from the mixture of economic, religious and political machinations and turmoil, that shaped the concept of a modern state? A return to princes atop vast (economic) estates wielding political power is a return to a terrifying past.

This is some of the worst reporting I’ve ever seen. Even considering you missed what Musk said in update, you ignore the fact that other companies are getting billions and the US government turns a blind eye to him. You also fail to understand the difference between a marketcap and what real cash flows mean to a company. Also, you act as if Musk is the only person has the type of power he has. How naive, seriously.

To solve this particular issue all we need to do is to pressure our governments is to subsidize and pay for Starlink. It's pretty fucking obvious how ridiculously strong of a military tool it is. Am I the only one who doesn't see an issue with paying Musk for the services he has provided? This has been the equivalent to a 100 million dollar donation already. That is a drop in the bucket to what Western governments have already spent on Ukraine, so why shouldn't Musk be entitled to be paid for his services? At least pay for the break even costs of the service.

Many of the people that view this video will be unaware that much of the money that Starlink was supposed to make in the next 10 years was intended to come from the Rural Digital Opportunity Fund (aka RDOF). These were grants given to companies to supply high speed internet services in very rural areas. Many people will not realize that in the US that there are many places with population densities between 1 and 10 people per square mile. Internet is hard to put there and so has been a swaths of land that have no or poor Internet Access. There was a form of auction for RDOF funds and Starlink initially won $900M (which would be awarded over 10 years). Recently Starlink (and some other winners) have been disqualified as not having the technical capability to meet the requirements of the service. Starlink is appealing that decision, but is unlikely to win. So, the primary way that SpaceX was going to pay to deploy Starlink has vanished.
@endless2239
@endless2239 Жыл бұрын
he said just the giving free internet in Ukraine will cost the company 100M and *some* of the terminal were paid by the govt, so how would have been 900M in 10y enough to cover the expansion in all rural USA? that sound fishy as F, I hope someone is doing the math cuz no wonder that plan got rejected.
@jimsackmanbusinesscoaching1344
@jimsackmanbusinesscoaching1344 Жыл бұрын
@@endless2239 The subsidy is what the subsidy is. Let's go at this the other way around. Let us say that he gave Ukraine 1,000 Terminals. That means he would be giving away about $500K for the terminals plus not charging $100K per month (Starlink service is about $100/month). For 1 year, this equates to $1.7M. So, there is no possibility that a $100+M subsidy is justified. Where did he get $100M+ for the subsidy from the Pentagon? I have no idea. But at 1,000 terminals that is over 80 years worth of service. One of the huge problems with LEO satellite Internet service is that you have to constantly launch replacement satellites to maintain the service. To put this in perspective, let's call fiber to the home service $2,500 per home cost (and that is a bit high). $128M funds the deployment of over 50K homes.

@@endless2239 i believe he said that the fees would cost 80m to operate at $110 per satalite, this doesnt include the cost of the satalites, and the cost for the research and development of them, which is typically the biggest cost in new products, look at things like iphone, you can get a phone 20years old for 10$ but when it was released will have been 1000$
@jimbarron9939

The problem with access to the internet in rural areas in the USA is not remotely about population density -it is about the density of money There are rural areas being"gentrified" in my region with far lower population density then most of the rural areas that just cannot get internet access yet the gentrified areas have far more bandwidth available then even someone binge watching streaming video could ever use. But in my area even with the best plan of the best service available it may take half an hour or an hour to download three web pages to order one small item on eBay and even then the order might process because the confirmation keeps getting timed out. And that's during times of low traffic!!! During primetime you often can't download a single web page! The end of net neutrality was effectively the end of rural access to the internet.
@jimsackmanbusinesscoaching1344
@jimsackmanbusinesscoaching1344 Жыл бұрын
@@jimbarron9939 Let me be clear on rural US, because most people, like you, don't understand it. Imagine a phone company with 6,500 subscribers in 7.500 square miles. And about 1/2 of that population lives in a little town. This is a real company that used to be called Valley Telephone in West Texas and is now part of VTC. I helped deploy the first DSL circuit for this company back in 1999. You also probably don't know that there are over 1,000 local telephone companies (not competitive or alternate carriers) and over 200 cable TV operators in the US. And this has NOTHING to do with Net Neutrality (which has to do with neutral treatment of content not the amount of bandwidth that subscribers get). And by the way, you can likely get 100Mb/s satellite Internet from Viasat if you so choose. Not good for latency in first person shooters, but streams video just fine. Given that compressed HD video is about 4 Mb/s, that is not a problem. So, stop your b*tching and look around for solutions.

"Elon Musk says his rocket firm SpaceX will continue funding its Starlink internet service in Ukraine, a day after he said it could no longer do so." - BBC yesterday. Independent of the outcome of that discussion, other US defense contractors are making a lot of money on this war, so it is kind of fair that the Defense Department pays the cost of Starlink also. Personally I think Musk should not tweet about geopolitics. In addition to the Ukraine war, he also said that Taiwan should be part of China and not independent, which is contrary to the view of most people in the free world.

The reason he wanted to pull it, stated, was money and security. NATO needs to get their asses moving and open up significant cyber divisions through Starlink; we need MASSIVE funding for military application of Starlink immediately. Obviously, Musk is a businessman first, but Starlink isn't free to operate, it has a gigantic upkeep that needs to be subsidized immediately. It is FAR too useful of a tool to lose to stingy pockets.

maybe/sort of.... a lot of terminals were bought by governments supporting Ukraine. Satelites travel in very low orbits and only cover area when they are directly above. A satelite using bandwidth over Ukraine is not a missed opportunity anywhere else .. well excluding russians. Ground stations not sure but in Europe internet is cheap (I'm sure Polish or Romanian governments/companies will have no problem supporting them). Finally .. I heard Ukrainian support organisations saying this is first time they are hearing about "waived monthly fees" - starlink costs 60eur/month in Ukraine and they are paying it through donations. I personally have no problem if Musk want to do a costs+ contract but dude seriously sux at PR.

Being valued at $207B doesn't mean he has $207B in cash. He'd have to completely give up all his shares in Tesla and sell SpaceX to be able to spend $207B. Also the whole point of Starlink was to make SpaceX sufficiently profitable to be able to develop their Starship system. If Starlink isn't profitable, that's actually also really bad news for SpaceX. It means their entire core long-term strategy is actually not viable.

@@GaganSingh-nx2yv Again, what? What are you even trying to say? Have you even thought it through? If you mean _do I think Musk was unaware that Starlink would struggle to be profitable before SpaceX set about developing it?_ then the answer is yes, I think Musk _and Shotwell_ both were unaware that Starlink would struggle to be profitable. I think he overestimated how much people would be willing to pay for it, he clearly underestimated the hardware that would be necessary to provide a good service (note the enormous increase in hardware sophistication between 1st and 2nd gen Starlink satellites), he almost certainly didn't predict the amount of time and money they'd end up spending reducing the satellites' albedos to mitigate complaints about light pollution. I also doubt that he predicted the inefficiencies and problems they'd run into manufacturing the things. He's well known to be a chronic optimist, and he has quite the reputation for being bad at estimating things in the future - especially timescales (you've surely heard the phrase "Musk-time") which are generally pretty hugely significant to things like profitability. If you mean the cost of providing Starlink service to Ukraine, again, for similar reasons, yes, I do believe he didn't realise what the cost would be. He probably thought ahead about as much as he usually does before tweeting. Even if we assume that he was overcome by a sudden and significant bout of forethought, he could easily have underestimated the amount of data traffic the Ukrainians could generate while being bombed, how long the war would go on, how many terminals would be required... But I'll wager most likely he just saw that something was going on, had an idea and decided to do the idea without putting all that much thought into it. But what are you even trying to imply?

To me, this is a question of if private money or private citizens should have this much influence. A follow-up question if your answer is no is what are you willing to give up or do to ensure that private money or private citizens don't have too much control (depending on what your definition of too much is). One doesn't need a lot of money to start a revolution. One doesn't need a huge following to have a lot of power. Asked a slightly different way, what are you willing to do or give up to have your preferred governance structure maintain or gain power and keep others under some threshold of control?

I'm not a big fan of Musk, but he did volunteer his (still in beta) system for Ukraine's use. Granted, he did it to get exposure and publicity for StarLink, but he still did it...and I didn't see (nor have I seen after this) anyone else stepping up to do, well, anything similar. His 'peace' plan is a joke (as is his suggestion about Taiwan), but I think asking someone to pay for StarLink's services is reasonable at this stage, especially if Ukraine has become more reliant on it. What this SHOULD spark in someone's head is that there is a real market for this technology and that getting your own constellation up there is going to be key. I know StarLink isn't the only company doing this, and I realize it's expensive, but surely someone realizes the potential here?? In rural America alone there is a ton of need for this...and not in 5 years, but more like 10 years ago. Musk doing what he's done has set that back as a lot of their efforts are going towards hooking up the Ukrainians, and as I said, I'm not seeing anyone else stepping up.
