Would agree with everything you suggested. Focus is hard to keep after no action, but if you can keep it, you have just upped your odds. I also love the size 5 Musky Killers, and have no issues throwing them with my baitcast reels. Great segment!

Musky and smallmouth have really hard inside of their mouths,and they swallow sharp stuff all the time. Heck they swallow spiky panfish,stone cats,hellgramites,crayfish. So your right I bet they don't feel hooks,and if they do they probably think it's just whatever their trying too eat (your bait). Good tips bud👍

A cast down river of miss/eat by a big fish, smallmouth and trout, are very productive, too. Never fished Musky but an/all apex predator in a river all behave in a similar pattern.

My favorite downsized throwback lure is a magnum force rat l trap. I use a heavy power savage gear swimbait rod with a curado 200 to throw what I call plus size bass lures. Works well for big cranks, small glides, musky killers, bass jigs, etc. I like to use titanium leaders for these smaller lures.

Dude you nailed it. I've had many musky come back after a hit-and-miss. And just like you said instantly cast back. My technique is to now make the bait act frantic and/or wounded. They come back same as a shark would. Looking for what it just injured. As far as "the fish felt the hooks". How many times has a musky been spined by a perch, blue Gill, walleye etc, Is pinched by a crayfish, Or bit and scratched by a muskrat. Then if that doesn't work I throw out a marker buoy and come back in about 20 minutes with different luers and presentation.( on lakes, I'm sure more difficult on rivers).

@Tim jones Absolutely. I think people give up on fish way too fast. A fish that bite once will frequently go again.

What spinning rods and reels are you useing most of the time? I use spinning gear most of the time for musky,and was wondering what your useing.

@Eric Pennington I use the St Croix Premier XH (there is a 7 and 7.5 or maybe 8 footer) that works well. I am still not sold on what reel to use but a size 40 works alright.

​@@HaightsWanderings 5000 shinano vanford or stradic . Super light. Keep mine spooled with 50lb Braid. And use it for a lot of smaller presentations with zero issues in 2 years now
