Muslim Community: Dealing with Homosexuality | Lobna Mulla, Omar Hedroug, Suzy Ismail, Lana Safah
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
👉The fast-growing LGBTQ movement and its societal empowerment have brought many intuitive questions to the minds of the Muslim community. What should someone do if they have feelings of homosexuality? How do they deal with it on a practical level? Do we just accept this as a reality in our community? Where do we draw the lines of our allyship with the LGBTQ community? Our panel of speakers will discuss the practical Islamic approach to this topic.
👉The Annual MAS-ICNA Convention is one of the largest and most diverse Islamic conventions in North America. The convention takes place in Chicago, Illinois every December during the winter holiday season.
I'm genuinely confused....how is demisexuality haraam? It kept being mentioned, but demisexuality just means someone needs a strong emotional bond before they have sexual desire. How would that be a bad thing? That actually would make it much much easier to lower your gaze and to refrain from zina.
Yes exactly. As someone who falls very close under the ace spectrum to demisexual, I was very confused too. Honestly I don’t know why she kept suing it but anyway. It’s probably a misunderstanding of the label.
I am going to do some research on this but (as a gut reaction) I think the issue is a) it being a fundamental primary identity, rather than Islam/being Muslim b) perhaps they were referring to those who are prone to developing sexual desires to anyone they can develops strong emotional bonds with, regardless of gender. The speaker could using it in that sense as it doesn’t distinguish from or also exists within a homosexual framework. I think that’s something that’s pretty interesting and beneficial, but none the less, someone shouldn’t let their “guard down” and think they’re immune from making mistakes when it comes to sexual desires and acting on them.
Exactly. I think demisexuality is the right way to be, even Islamically speaking. I wish I get a demisexual husband. Cuz I'm also a demisexual. My ex husband was hyper sexual and lusting after every other woman on the street. He was about to cause a car accident looking at a woman with a big back on the sidewalk. I felt humiliated with such a lustful person. He was so ashamed of me because he loved sticking to young white half naken girls. Demisexuality is the best way to be in terms of sezuality.
May I also say: fundamentally, straight Muslims should not be concerned with whether non-straight Muslims are acting on their lusts or not. Their respect and kindness towards all people should be irrespective of what they do.
I’ve never had same sex adultery or any adultery at all. But I’m getting, stuck day by day, and it’s a helpless situation, no one can understand. No one can understand why you can’t sustain friendships because you are afraid people would notice you’ve always been single. No one can understand how tough it is to see everyone you’ve grown up with finding love, getting married and having children. Absolutely no one can understand how torn you can be when you can’t give any answer to your kind parents who ask you who’s “the lucky one”. And I think that no one has the right to judge because no one is as humiliated as we are.
It's like a panel of male medical professionals doing a talk show focussing on women's reproductive rights, while it's obliquely kinda within their field, they're not the community being discussed so they shouldn't be discussing it. If they wanted to be reasonable and respectful in this discussion, there should have been equal or greater representation from LGBTQIA+ panellists.
@@greymind0072 It is true that same-sex activities are a sin but homosexuality is not. Did you know in Islam anal sex is haram, it is said that if a husband asks their wife to do it or tried to force her, that is a legit reason to ask for a divorce. Marriage is a way of you know allowing halal intimacy with the other partner. for this reason, a man and a man marrying is not allowed. Just because you feel the attraction to the same gender is not a sin. What we consider sin is you acting upon that desire and doing those haram same-sex activities. there are Muslim brothers and sisters who have such feelings, just because they have them does not mean they are not Muslims. what makes you one of the nonbelievers is that you trying to normalize such acts, by saying Allah made me this way so how is it a sin. Even if you do such acts and know what you did is a sin, tried to overcome those feelings but still fell into temptation, no one can say you are not part of Islam. all humans do sins. if because of one sin you never go to heaven I guess we all are going to hell. repentance is what allows you to go to heaven. we can only go to heaven because of Allah's mercy. Muslims who despise and shame Muslims who are homosexual, have no right to say such stuff. those who overcome that desire will surely be rewarded, those who tried to overcome it and failed but continued to repent will also be rewarded. however, those who are transgressors who try to normalize such behaviours will be punished. this temporary world is a test you need to pass. homosexuality is one of those tests, those who fail it are only hypocrites who try to not admit the sins and normalize the acts. not those who do the sin but still know what they are doing is a sin. brother/sister stop insulting our religion if you don't even know the reason. you can leave the religion if you want but mockery is not acceptable. have a good day.
The video conference, the image itself is teaching or enlightening me that homosexuality is rights infringe of the opposite sex .i.e. As a man homosexuality is infringing the woman right to have a marriage and As a woman homosexuality is infringing the man right to marriage. If you have desires there is someone who will enjoy to have you as their life partner since he/she is from the opposite sex. So the image taught me that, unmarried women is plenty and men unmarried is plenty. So in conclusion marry more women if you are a man and a woman should encourage her husband to save other women from homosexuality by adding more wives
Why shouldn't we act on the attraction? Why is everything always centered around heterosexuality? Why suppress what is natural to us? Should we just suppress our sexuality and live without love, companionship etc. Marriage is nothing but a business transaction to continue populating an already overpopulated world. Let people live, there's so many heterosexual people out there that there will never be a lack of procreation. Homosexuality isn't a struggle for someone who is homosexual. It's a struggle to live as society beliefs they should live.
It’s easy for them to tell lgbt people to suppress their feelings of love and affection, while the heterosexuals can enjoy sex, love, affection, intimacy ! Hypocrites ha! Ask a heterosexual to pick between Allah’s reward or enjoying sex. I’m sure they all will choose sex over Allah!! Ask a heterosexual not to “act” upon their sexual desires and live a celibate life to go get Allah’s reward. I’m sure the heterosexuals will leave Islam and will chose sex! The brother actually spoke to and for those who are going through this. I think that it would have been helpful to have someone on the panel who has gone through having these feelings and overcame it...or is actually going through having these feelings. Unrealistic...probably because of the labels that are placed on us in the community whether it is this issue, drugs, prison, divorce...need i go on? We have Muslims who see themselves as saints and view others as devils that they need to protect themselves and their families from instead of seeing each other as true brothers and sisters that we are placed on this earth to help, look out for and support with everything that we have been given from Allah.
Things happen for a reason. There is something positive in every situation from which to grow. For example, if a father is homophobic and has mistreated homosexuals in the past and present, and then it turns out that his son, whom he loves dearly, is homosexual, that should show him that his behaviour and judgments were wrong. It does not matter what gender you are, what religion you believe in, whether you are agnostic or atheist, your sexual orientation does not matter either, neither does your ethnicity. Step on your ego and pride, always be truthful. Be selfless and think of others first, be honest and not greedy. Try to be understanding of others' behavior instead of judging others. When you are connected to the Divine, there is no one but you. No one should interfere in your spiritual path, and you should not interfere in the spiritual path of others.
For one point, we dont know if any of these speakers don't have those specific desires. But in general all humans do - not just homosexuality but zina which is more encompassing. muslims should strive to protect oneself against all forms of zina actions. Another point is that it's not necessary. This was done on purpose not to make a spotlight out of somebody which could derail what should be discussed which the bottom line should be based on the Quran and Sunna. Personally I think this panel speaks to me and I have those desires. I agree with the truth in Islam that life is a test and a form of that could be wealth, health, and whims and desires. It is clear that following lust deludes one from truth like the people of Lot. What my nafs or desires think is good doesn't necessarily translate to what is actually good to better oneself as a muslim. Allah ultimately knows what is best.
I mentioned this because the sister mentions the phrase' the bismillah police' .If it's not a this phrase than its the ' haraam police'.I ask of you to kindly refrain from this terminology.We start every good action with BISMILLAH as Muslims,and We are given guidelines of what's forbidden in our Deen and that's called HARAAM.Why taint a beautiful discussion with phrases that are derogatory...and yes toward our fellow Muslims.Coming from America which is a country of Superpower in Immorality and haraam practices according to the Quraan and Sunnah every Muslim there needs to be as firm as an iron wall to stand up for the Deen and the Ummah there.Theres no room for meekness or shyness or feeling the need to be apologetic for saying the word haraam.This is however by far the best approach in talks on LGBQT that I've seen thus far.
The problem here is that Muslims can't grasp that God is not a sadist who forbids things on whim so as to punish us. He forbids what is bad for us so that we may be better and happier. Accordingly sins like eating pork, drinking alcohol, homosexuality and even stealing are sinful in differing degrees depending on time and context. It should have been acknowledged in this discussion that homosexuality was a highly anti-social and destructive tendency at the time of the Prophet, enabling men to evade familial responsibilities and thereby threaten the whole fabric of society while today the situation is different. Homosexuality may still be sinful but it is incumbent on commentators like these to say exactly why and to what degree. Their unwillingness to do so reflects a childish notion of God as a tyrannical father who has no interest in nurturing our powers of reason and judgment but only wants us to do or not to do things "because I say so".
I appreciate what all the speakers are trying to do and say, but all the analogies and easy phrases 'your sexuality is not your identity', 'your feelings are not your identity' are so simplistic and to me, a gay person, pretty insulting, (though I'm sure you don't mean it to be). I think you should not sugar coat things. Admit it's a tragedy for a Muslim teenager to discover he or she is gay. Their lives are going to involve a lot of emptiness and suffering. And that's that. I appreciate your attempt to be humane, - but given the scripture you accept as true, - and I have no criticism for that, you are all honest believers, - I don't see any place for people like me in your community, (which is fine). Call it what it is. Hating the 'action' but not hating the person is easy for you to do, or think you are doing. For someone is gay, whose sexuality is far more integrated into their entire personality than you want to believe, - it is all received as rejection, - which it is. Blessings for what you are trying to do.
Exactly. It's like- no its not just "dealing with same sex attraction". Gay men and women are definitionally not attracted to the opposite sex and never will be. If this is the case, what are the solutions which exist within the faith? A- feign heterosexuality by marrying a person you may love but will never truly be attracted to, or B- remain celibate. Neither of these are sustainable options if you ask me. Being gay is more of an "identity" than being straight because being straight is perceived as the norm, just part of human nature. It is just taken for granted as the backdrop of life, but for gay people who cannot exist effortlessly, their sexual orientation becomes central to their lives, and thus part of their identity. I wish they actually had gay folks on stage to talk with. All of these talks on Islam and homosexuality are just straight people saying what they think being gay is and feels like. Anyways like you said - they musnt abandon empathy but they should be honest- there is currently no way of reconciling homosexuality with the faith and all of the solutions which operate in the current paradigm are only known to increase suffering (sham marriage, conversion therapy, and not so voluntary celibacy). This is coming from a straight female convert.
Why are religions so obsessed with other people's sexuality. Also, homosexuality isn't about the "action" or a "desire", it's about being able to LOVE someone of the same sex and having the ability to be with that person, in public, to build up a life together, just like anyone else. I'm a born atheist gay man and I don't think I should go around and have sex with people, at the end of the day I want a stable life with the person I love. The fact certain LGBTQ+ people make such a big deal of their sexuality is as a response to people, often religious people, who discriminate against us for who we are, or in religious terms (I'm not religious, but here I go) how God made us. Many countries around the world still criminalise homosexuality and many more give no opportunity to register as a couple, which makes it difficult, if not impossible, to have a life, to be registered on the same address and what not. The idea that love (and all that comes with it) between two consenting adults is wrong according to certain religions tells me that certain religious, or certain religious sects, or certain religious individuals are a lot of things, but accepting and caring and non-judgemental they are not. How this topic is handled within certain communities is so offensive and also quite wrong. Do y'all not know that the suicide rate amongst LGBTQ+ youth is WAY higher than with non-LGBTQ+ youth? Largely because of this reasoning and that's just so painful. Getting "rewarded" for surpressing natural feelings, which often leads to depression, self harm or even suicide. This is so wrong and so harmful. We should live in a world where we can all accept others for who they are. My deal is, as long as you respect me and uphold the law of the country (I'm Dutch, so any type of discrimination is forbidden), I will do the same to you. If not, that's the line and I don't see why I should associate myself with bigoted people.
There are so many wrong things you've written here that it's absolutely near impossible to have a discussion. To understand and tackle this issue from an Islamic perspective, you NEED to first understand the fundamental principles before going discussing issues. Just to give you an example, imagine that we, as a society, found out that by a allowing a certain action, consequences of that action are delayed to one or two generations down the line? Now. Would you still prioritize individual liberty? In selfish societies like yours, individuals are all that matters. So, that what you guys chose.
If so, she could lose her license in a profession that is LGBTQ-affirming. In all these circumstances you have to believe and submit to what ALLAH wants from you, and we as humble dust cannot question why he made us go through these trials we just need to make dua for saber and be strong. I have gone through the above although it may not be same sex attractions, but either way it is a struggle to not let your nafs or sexual thoughts and hormones take over you and not let love of another fill the place that should be Allah's in your heart.
Homosexuality is not a sin, but the panel thinks it is. As much as heterosexually is normal, homosexuality is also natural. In the animal-kingdom homosexuality is also present. There is nothing wrong with same-sex if it's between two consenting adult persons.
So you can have feelings but not act upon it, then it's a sin. And premarital intercourse is also a sin so what if same sex people get married is that allowed. Pardon me if my question is insensitive, I am from another community just want to know more about Islam ✌🏻️.
Allah doesn't say don't love anyone, of course you can love your friends and help them if they need help, and go out to each other's to see how are they. You can chat and be best of friends, BUT you can not love each other for sexual desires that is forbidden by Allah. (God ).
Let's not represse desires. Or we'll live a frustrated situation. My religion gave me the toolkit to repress myself and feel miserable.
i have no opinion on whether being gay or lesbian can be reconciled with being a Muslim, christian or jew. it would have been good to have some folks from the glbtq community on the panel who actually know what they are talking about. to equate being gay lesbian or bi with overeating or drinking is deeply ignorant and insulting..
