Muslim Family Restaurant MAE SAI, Thailand 🇹🇭 Mom Feeds Us 30+ Year "BEANS" Recipe By Hand ♥️

In this video, our journey of "off limits to tourist" areas continues with a gigantic lunch at a family restaurant, SURPRISING us with Saudi Arabian style dishes, right on the border with Myanmar.
Welcome to Mae Sai, the northern-mostpoint in Thailand. We are in Chiang Rai, we have been here for 1 week, and we are so encouraged by the families we have met here - I am very happy to share all of this with you in this video today, I hope that this message finds you well!!
It took me a while to find a restaurant that was even open, which is sort of the trend of this entire trip, but making the best of this situation* both Li and I were blown away by our fortune in finding a wonderful family, cooking amazing food, needless to say I was moved to tears when they didn't even want us to pay for the meal.
I have been to Mae Sai many times, and for me there are few places that have ever touched my heart like this - I even tried to work here at a few different points in my 10+ years in Thailand - it is a very, very special, very cool and ultra-diverse place, if you look past the industrial use of the main North-South highway (trading goods with Myanmar), basically everything else in this town is pure magic. Amazing place in Thailand for sure! Again, very glad you have chosen to watch this video today :)

*Situation meaning, only local tourism is allowed at all right now in Chiang Rai (only accessible by those currently residing in Thailand), and NO hotels/restaurants/cafes/etc. except those in the main towns are allowed to accept dine-in customers. Mae Sai is the main town of this area, but even though we were allowed to eat at this restaurant today, it still doesn't mean that any of the restaurants are doing much more than just barely scraping by - most places we went on this trip, we were the only customers that day - so we were thankful to be able to BE a blessing, this is something I wont soon forget from this trip.

I ate at this same restaurant 10+ years ago and Aminah(the mom) sat with me and talked with me about life and then would not accept any payment from me. I came back the next day to give her a gift and she fed me again and again, refused payment. This family is the sweetest family in the world and I look forward to visiting them with my own children ❤

Good morning Joel and Li ❤️🌻. What a beautiful heartfelt video. Adore the mom, making sure you eat your food 🤣. How I miss Indian food now that isn't homemade. I cook a lot of Indian dishes and they are good but nothing beats the hospitality of Asian people. I think the warmth and welcoming makes it much more delicious. Cooking with love definitely changes the taste of food for the better. This may not be the most appropriate story but my mom had a very close Indian friend when I was little during the apartheid era. I remember one time when we visited and I asked my mom of it's ok if I bath in her bath. She had the most beautiful corner bath in bright pink. She made me a bubblebath and I stayed in there for hours 🤣. I was only about 4 years old. She also used to make amazing samoosas. Think that is where my love for spicy foods came from. Another great one, it made my morning. So; you just found that place using your " foodie radar"? That's awesome! Your positive vibes bring out the best in folk too. I've never had much luck in Mae Sai, food wise. Neither on the Tachileik side, just never seems to click. I waited 1/2 hour at the big tea shop in Tachileik and the wait staff just ignored me, despite my attempt so signal them. I finally had to go and just get a snack in the market before going back. (One of many "border runs", back in the day, when one could do that.) I've even stayed over night in Mae Sai a few times and, I can't say I remember finding any place worth remembering to eat. I think just food carts. You are blessed with "the nose!"

I first noticed you in some of those great Mark Wiens videos and I thought ‘who is this really sweet and respectful guy who is backing him up’? Now I’ve discovered your channel and see you are quite the superstar in your own right. Oh man Markus you are back in one of the most awesome trips, now I’m trying to think how many months ago this was… Yes a very special restaurant and we still have not been able to make the video of the relatives restaurant they recommended us to visit here in July. I’ve been waiting but I’m also training hard right now and… Ha ha Ha. That is not the kind of food that you can do much after eating. It’s kind of a celebration meal eating that much oil ha ha :-) so I’m saving it for next week after the big race is finally done

Joel....The two main types of chickpea: the larger light tan Kabuli and variously coloured Desi chickpea. They are green when picked early and vary through tan or beige, speckled, dark brown to black. 75% of world production is of the smaller desi type. The larger garbanzo bean or hoummus was introduced into India in the 18th century.

WOW thats another superb positive video. I watched it eating my dinner. I didnt know there are Muslim populations in North Thailand too. BTW I think these are Muslim foods but not Arabic necessarly. Its a blessing to enjoy all these different food types in one country. I cant get my head around the fact that fast chains are getting more and more popular in Thailand while such extremely friendly family-run restaurants exist.
