Having multiple wives did not begin until sin entered the world, and it began under the ungodly Cain-Lamech civilization. In Genesis, it is documented when the first man married 2 wives. Consequently, men began to turn their hearts away from God around this time. Having more than 1 or 2 wives was very uncommon in the Old Testament. I believe only the kings had more than 2 wives. The Bible shows how the women and kids suffered in this family structure, because of favoritism and jealousy. Most importantly, most of the men with multiple wives had their hearts turned away from God by those wives. For example, this was the case with the wisest King in Israel, King Solomon. Job, a man God describes as perfect and upright in the Old Testament, had 1 wife. Deacons, Bishops, Pastors are only allowed 1 wife in the Bible. The Bible does not outlaw polygamy, but it paints a picture that it is not the standard, or a goal, and shows a lot of the problems that come with it. God's perfect will is for 1 man to have 1 wife, except in extreme cases. God's permissive will is what God will allow, but is not a part of His perfect plan. Multiple wives is a recurring source of familial strife, and unhappiness in the Old Testament. It is also a recurring theme that multiple wives are a distraction from doing the will and work of God. The Apostle Paul even goes as far as to say that he wished that Christians could be unmarried like him, so that they could focus on ministry. He went on to say that contentment in celibacy is a gift, but nevertheless to avoid fornication (sexual sin), it is good to let every man have his own wife..

There's a 50% chance for a child to be born male or female, so the ratio between men and women is 1:1. So it's not human nature to have lasting marriages between 1 man and 4 women. I have no issue with people who want to be in polygamous relationships, but the majority of people prefer being partnered up with only one person. This polygamy culture is not based on human nature, it's based on social inequality that focuses on male sexual desires. Think about it. Why would a woman choose to marry a man who has three other wives if she had the choice to be the only wife? You probably know men wouldn't like polyamory if the roles were reversed. The full sentence is that men have permission to have up to four wives, but if they know what is good for them- they should only have one. Having more than one wife is meant for men who can financially support the women and save them from homelessness and being shunned in society at the time. The thing everyone needs to remember is that Islam didn't allow up to four wives. It's more correct to say It restricted the number of wives to 4. The wisdom behind it is to allow for the different cultures that may practice polygamy for different reasons. Some of which may be very practical such as giving women in need a legal status as wife through which she is entitled by law to economic maintenance from her husband. Other reasons may be to produce children. Although there isn't anything wrong with marrying multiple wives as a sexual outlet, it is hardly the strongest grounds for marriage. And Islam has outlined the basis on how to choose a spouse in order to built family units for a stronger society. Islamic law is applied as part of a holistic legal system where what is forbidden is illegal and punishable by state justice system. So it isn't creating polygamy rather as a system it considers the difference in cultures and viewpoints when it comes to marriage, and allowed for such practices. But restricted the number of wives to 4. Out of interest, if you're curious, women may only have one husband. Only for the fact that in Islamic legal system the husband is legally obliged to economically support his wife no matter her income. So based on this family system, it doesn't allow for women to have multiple husbands as it cause uneven distribution of wealth in society, where the idea is to build sustainable family units.

It is a necessity of belief that polygamy is right. However, to believe it does not necessarily mean for a woman to consent to the second wife and approve it. No believer father would like his son-in-law to marry a second, third or fourth woman along with his daughter. The jealous nature of the woman and the affection of the father for his daughter disapproves this. As a matter of fact, the daughter of our beloved Prophet, Sayyidah Fatima, objected to her husband, Ali’s marrying of a second woman. If it weren’t permissible to object, Sayyidah Fatima, who was brought up by our Prophet, would not have objected. The Messenger of Allah would have warned her and ordered her to consent to her husband’s wish. However, it did not take place like that. On the contrary, the Messenger of Allah, who saw that his daughter was worried, asked Ali to give up his wish and told him that if he did not give it up, he could marry another woman after divorcing Sayyidah Fatima. He did not consent to Ali’s second marriage to depress his daughter. By considering that act of the Messenger of Allah, it can be stated that Muslim daughters and fathers may object to the second marriage of their husband or son-in-law.

The jealous nature of the woman and the affection of the father for his daughter disapproves this. If it weren’t permissible to object, Sayyidah Fatima, who was brought up by our Prophet, would not have objected. On the contrary, the Messenger of Allah, who saw that his daughter was worried, asked Ali to give up his wish and told him that if he did not give it up, he could marry another woman after divorcing Sayyidah Fatima. He did not consent to Ali’s second marriage to depress his daughter. By considering that act of the Messenger of Allah, it can be stated that Muslim daughters and fathers may object to the second marriage of their husband or son-in-law.

For all of those who think it is ideal if Muslim women are not financially dependent on men: Would it be ideal if Muslim men were not sexually dependent on their women? For example would it be ideal if men could purchase (at low cost) harems of docile life-like forever-young sex robots?
