Asslamoalaikum sister I have one ques could u pls answer it travelling without mahram for one day or one night means u are actually travelling like you're on the way for 24 hrs or what if the travelling is of only 4-5 hours like in the aeroplanes or u are in the car and then u reach your destination and live there for 2-3 days...does living outside count in travelling without mahram ? Coz nowadays travelling not takes complete 24 hours if u go by plane or car ???

Thank you for your question. The issue of women traveling without a mahram is discussed in several Hadiths, and scholars have provided interpretations based on different situations. The general ruling from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is that a woman should not travel a distance of “a day and a night” without a mahram. However, scholars interpret this ruling based on safety, duration, and mode of travel. In modern times, long journeys that used to take days can now be completed within hours due to cars, trains, and airplanes. Many scholars today agree that if the journey is safe, secure, and shorter in duration (like 4-5 hours by plane or car), then it may be permissible for a woman to travel without a mahram. However, if the destination is unsafe or if there’s potential risk, a mahram is highly recommended. As for staying in a place for 2-3 days without a mahram, this would depend on the circumstances. If you’re traveling for essential reasons (such as education, work, or visiting family) and the environment is secure, many contemporary scholars say it can be allowed. However, it is always better to consult your local scholar who understands your personal situation. Remember that Islam prioritizes protection and dignity for women, and the rulings are there to ensure safety, not to impose hardship. I hope this helps clarify your question. May Allah guide us all to what is best.

The Qur'an indeed encourages exploration and reflection upon Allah's creation. Verses like: "Travel through the earth and see how He began creation." (Qur'an 29:20) highlight the importance of travel and learning as a means to understand Allah’s power and wisdom. This invitation applies to all believers, men and women alike, as the Qur'an does not differentiate genders in such commands.

Thank you for your question. The topic of traveling without a mahram is very important, and it’s great that you are seeking clarification. Islam emphasizes the safety and well-being of women. When it comes to traveling, there are differences of opinion among scholars. Some scholars hold that a woman should always travel with a mahram for any journey beyond a certain distance (approximately 48 miles or more), while others believe that if the journey is safe and there are trustworthy people accompanying her, it may be permissible. In your case, since this is a school trip organized with teachers and classmates and the journey is short-term (16 hours), many scholars would consider it permissible as long as the trip is well-organized and safety is ensured. However, always consult a local scholar you trust for advice based on your specific circumstances and cultural context. And most importantly, make sure you feel comfortable and safe. I pray Allah keeps you protected wherever you go! May Allah guide us all. Ameen.

The issue of women traveling without a mahram for studies is a debated topic among scholars. Some scholars permit it if the journey is safe and secure, particularly if the purpose is essential, like seeking knowledge, which is highly encouraged in Islam. However, others advise against long-distance travel without a mahram unless there’s a necessity. It’s important to assess the situation, ensuring safety, and consult with trusted scholars or your family for guidance based on your specific circumstances. Feel free to DM me on Instagram to discuss this topic in more detail. May Allah guide us all to what is best. Ameen.
