Mussel Rock and the San Andreas Fault

I actually had someone argue with me that the fault didn't go into the ocean there. He claimed that it was inland, somewhere in the bay. I told him to go back to school and learn something this time.

I actually live in one of the houses on the cliff by Mussel Rock that you said you wouldn't live in if they paid you! We've already lost some of our back yard since I moved in 4 years ago!

Sounds terrible! I hope you weren't offended by my comment. It seems so scary (to me) the idea of living on an active fault line. And yet it is such a lovely area to visit. I hope all goes well for you in the future.

I can't be offended by the truth! I also found your coverage of the buildings on Clara Street fascinating because I used to work for Pelican Delivery - a company located at 218 Clara Street!!!

I've flown RC gliders there for years and spent a lot of time in and around that parking lot, including just today. Yes the fault is a feature, but I don't think it's responsible for all the cracks and general fast changes. I think that's more because it's all built on barely compressed sand which slumps, subsides, and generally washes away. You'll see much the same things all up and down the coast. Note that I think the actual fault is the first valley along the North side of that parking lot, a few meters North of the rock itself.

Mussel Rock Park has two problems to contend with -- one is the San Andreas fault line, the other is beach erosion, in which the Pacific Ocean and the storms that go through there during the winter continue to work on the sandy soils along the beaches and cliffs in the area. I wouldn't want to live in any of those houses there either, if for no other reason than the Pacific Plate side of the beach could certainly collapse onto the beach just on account of the weak soils that are already there. I don't think liquefaction would necessarily be a problem, but a sudden jolt along the fault in that area could completely collapse the landscape as it sits presently I would think.

Click Bait? I think the leaning buildings that you show are "NEW" and are built this way ... no way would new construction have facades leaning so much (yes, I know about the downtown building)... artistic frontage ... anyone in SF can confirm?

DO YOU HAVE PHOTOS of a 1 foot drop or more in Mendocino? goes thru the high school, next to the Hotel, or photos of Heesers Drive when flooded with water rise????? I am seeking photos and or video footage. OR Little River, Cajon Pass (I was stuck there with the crack open around 1 foot), etc. on the San Andreas Fault. The San Andreas Fault is actually just the millions of years old gap between the Pacific Tectonic Plate and the North American Tectonic Plate. There are gaps between plates all over the world, these areas are inclined to large earthquakes and sometimes the gap opens. The Pacific plate tends to sink a few hours then rises back to its normal position. I think this is due to gravitational pull of the moon and tides but the Pacific plate is covered with water, while the North American plate is not. The West side of the tectonic gap aka the Pacific Plate sometimes goes down a few feet, blocking roads from Santa Cruz CA to San Jose. It also blocks roads around Little River CA and right thru town and the high school in Mendocino village, people get trapped on the west side of town. Students stuck in the cafeteria have to wait for the crack to even out before going back to class. I have even been stuck in Cajon Pass 15 north between Glen Helen and Victorville, the car in front of me nearly did not make it and the north american plate rose and people were honking till they could see it, they we had to wait a while. Sometimes this take a couple of hours, rarely a couple of days, this also happens in the Pt Reyes area in Marin County CA. I am looking for video or photos substantiating this, but someone somewhere in government tries to hide it as an embarrassment. Meanwhile I write Senator Diane Feinstein suggesting temp bridges to swing into place during seismic activity. When I lived in Mendocino, after something like this would happen; some government man would stop by with a black box and 2 metal plates asking people to touch both plates, like the arcade game that will make you forget the past few days, however sometimes those memories can resurface after many years, so ask the old timers or those who ran from the guy with the shock machine. I would tell my grandparents to tell them I was visiting my mom in Hollywood. One day I was at a friends, and another friend walked in with a black box and 2 metal plates. The west side of Mendocino is cliffs above the ocean maybe 14 feet to 20 feet above the ocean, but the west side goes down so much that the ocean Tsunamis (gently) the west side of town including Kelly street with 2 feet of water, one time I was visiting a friend on Kelly Street and the first floor filled up and we went to the second floor of the house, the main danger is you must hang on to land when the water leaves.

I simply walked down the length of Clara Street and found them. One of the buildings with the window nearly at ground level was number 222.

Thanks Rodney. Do you remember where the crumbling wall at 3:13 is located? And is that wall damage result of 1) a major earthquake further away from the fault or 2) ongoing damage on top of the fault? Looking at a map of where the San Andreas Fault runs, this area's features seem to be 1).

I checked out Clara St on Google Earth. The brick wall appears to be at about 151 Clara St. The geological effects in Clara St are not really earthquake related as much as subsidence due to the buildings being rebuilt on marshy grounds after the 1906 earthquake.
