Must Do in Porto? Douro River Cruise Wine Tasting Honest Review | Porto - Pinhao

Porto, the town that gave the country and port wine its name, is the second-largest city in Portugal.
I will give you my honest review of the Douro Valley river cruise from Porto to Pinhao. While the famous port wine bears Porto's name, it's produced in the beautiful Douro Valley. This tour is a 12-hour long, including breakfast and lunch, a scenic cruise from Porto to Pinhao, port wine tasting, and the bus back to Porto.

I did a day tour wine taster and lunch and cruise on small boat . It was amazing day out . Met wonderful people too. It was on getyour guide . Douro river cruise and wine tasting. Fabulous day

You forgot to tell people that there are cruises of several days! :) People should do the several day's cruises because that way they can spend days on the places, and have a bigger experience, even participating on the process of producing wine on the vineyards themselves. Of course these fast cruises are very time limited, but there are other options in which people spend time in several cities, check places where wine is made and stored, festivities, etc. These fast trips are for people without time, like when we climb the Arrábida bridge to see the sunset up there, and only have a few minutes driking a bit of wine. It all has to do with the time we choose to spend. But the several days cruises are more expensive obviously but some choose those.

I agree with your assessment that the time spend in the vineyards was too short. I wonder if there's an option to take the boat up to Pinhao, spend the night there at a hotel, and then boat back -- that might make more sense? The train is probably the best bet since I think it's only 13 euros (round trip?) and it is much faster than the boat. It's possible to have a guided car trip from Porto as well, although it might not be as scenic. My wife and I drove a car from Guarda, from the south, and the last forty minutes meant STEEP hillsides, rugged roads, switchback and harrowing turns, although there were some breathtaking views. We took a one-hour boat excursion from Pinhao, up about 30 minutes and then back, and it was somewhat pleasant, but rather boring since there was no commentary. We visited Bom Fim vineyard (called 'quinta') but it was closed, so we hung out in the reception area taking pictures of the history on the walls. That bridge is narrow -- if there's a large truck or bus approaching from the opposite side, one of the two vehicles will have to go back in reverse! We visited the vineyard across the Rio Duoro and for 4 euros, got a small taste of wine. Overall what was most fun was trying to keep the rental car from getting dinged by other cars or by the narrow streets!

I did remember the bus ride from the pier to the vineyards, we did cross a narrow bridge that allow one car at the time and i was shock by how skilled the bus drivers in Portugal. I would definitely take the train next time and explore more vineyards

Yes there are, there are several days cruises, with lots of time, this one was a very quick cruise, so they didn't have time for anything special. :) On the bigger cruises you'll see several cities and vineyards and even have experiences like participating in the process of wine productions and even those traditional old processes of stepping over the grapes.

Hi, I enjoyed the cruise itself maybe a bit more than you but have to agree that the tasting was disappointing and too rushed. Breakfast was not up to much but lunch was good. Later in the holiday we went up by train and stayed over which we enjoyed more but both were good.
